I just saw the name of the denomination I grew up in on the list from the USA. I paused and went on a multi hour search through articles. It all makes sense now. Everything I thought was insane and extreme growing up in Pentecostal churches now makes sense. Me thinking speaking in tongues and seeing demons was real leading to my love of paranormal fiction. My extended family cutting me off when I left, to the point that non of them have checked in on me to make sure I’m okay since my mother’s (still in the cult) recent death. The weird compulsions I have to fight to act, dress, etc. My feeling like sex is owed to a partner even when unwanted, but still feeling like the act itself is violating me even when I want it, feeling guilty for lusting for my husband (I am currently married). I grew up in a cult. And, now I can’t stop crying and I think I need therapy.
Damn my heart goes out to you. It's an unlearning process, it may take time, but you can heal and unlearn all those things taught to you. I wish you well.
Facebook as well. That Teal Swan woman has a Facebook group called Teal Tribe and it's a bunch of lost and suicidal people clawing at each other for attention, especially for Teal's attention.
Potato Productions Don’t believe everything you read on the internet. And scientists are not geniuses, they are human too, susceptible to the same emotions as ordinary people.
Saeed Khan I agree, but I have a question, does this imply that these religions are still cults? Because I want to know if people are saying this and implying that religions don't operate like cults because the leader is dead or are they implying that there is really no difference at all between religions and cults?
@@user-bv9oi8bx7n there is a difference a line in religion what is worshiped is usually god(s) and the prophet or founder is dead but in a cult they either worship a demonic being and follow stuff that they already know and accept that they're evil and immoral Or one person or group of people that they believe will make society better or create a utopia and then end up suiciding or practicing illegal retuals and throw there money to them
Thankfully, Scientology is diminishing over time. They’re not getting new members. The only new members are current members having kids. There’s at most 30k around the world.
This was terrifyingly accurate…sending love and hugs to all who have been involved in a cult and managed to get out. Everyday is a struggle so we have to do our best to keep fighting so hopefully other cult members can open their eyes
I agree. I was in a cult. At a young age, they put me in a school to learn how to become a productive peg in a top-down run organization that taught me what to believe and that they, the leaders were in place to serve me. It took years but I finally realized my education, the many group social initiations, and the claim they were here to serve me, it was all a lie. They blinded me of the truth, that I am soul & spirit 1st, mind & body 2nd. They'd drugged my mind and body with harmful chemicals, excessive sugar was routinely buried in my food. While they gave me back much of what I earned in a week, I had little choice but to spend it within the system I had been raised to serve. I didn't really spend it, I just gave it back. I got out of that cult and now live a life of LOVE - LAUGHTER - & LISTENING. Love for the morning star, laughter as a way to cleanse reality, & listening, listening to my own inner cult. I pray for the other members of this cult that they would wake up and realize their living in modern-day mind-numbing soul suppressing slavery. That cult even had a cool-aid company. No shame. ✌P*E*A*C*E✌
Same my mum's a narcissts. All cult leaders are narcissts. People can't make the connection between narcisstic abuse and cults even after it's known cult leaders are narcissts. A narcisstic family is it's own type of cult with a narcisstic figure head at top. A lot of people get fooled by a narcissists fake persona and by the time they figure out they got fooled they're living in the narcissts fantasy world they either submit themselves to it or have to find away to escape. I had a cult yesterday try recruit me with the "God loves you, he's here for you and trust me he understands" then handed me a card about their meeting. They had the same brainwashed faces and glazed eyes you see on the faces of most members of every single cult. Cults are a lot easier to spot them most people realise. If you meet overly friendly people who's group can give you "the answers you're looking for" I mean make the obvious connection.
When you're thinking that, it's likely someone not showing these traits comes along, and still is abusive, just packaged completely different. From an outward, violent narcissist to a covered narc, they all have similar traits, but you could not see it, until it's too late...
I recommend a book called Warlike & Peaceful Societies: The Interaction of Genes & Culture. It has a lot to say about the psychology behind this type of behaviour.
My off-campus sorority ticks off every point on this list. I was traumatized for years. The last three, the ones that help you leave, is what happened and how I finally left. Cults are everywhere.
"my survival instinct had not been crushed". I think for me that sums up what I love the most about humanity, this drive towards life and survival and vitality. In my opinion that's the basic thing that distinguishes a cult from a healthy group: does it encourage the impulse towards life, autonomy or freedom, or does it try to crush it?
OH MY GOD FINALLY TEAL SWAN WAS LABELED AS A CULT LEADER!! I was such a big fam but then realised "dude she sounds like a cult leader" and made my research, which concluded my assumption. I used to be a fan of two other "cult leaders": master sri akarshana and Leo Gura. Also I suspect 'Aaron Doughty' to be one??? can anyone confirm or debunk this?
Something that would help is to look into spiritual narcissism. The belief that spiritual knowledge makes you superior to others. Any spirituality based cults are founded upon this belief which is lead by well a narcisst. If you want to learn about real spirituality go find a local temple. The internet is the worst place to go looking for that stuff
Aaron doughty was the first person I thought of when I watched this documentary, I relate to Aaron and his life story but he does have cult like abilities I’m happy to found Aaron he just resonates more with me , I just don’t want to make his whole teaching apart of my life
I am a 75 year old woman, highly educated, who spent fifteen years in a destructive religious cult. Not destructive like the Davidians, but mentally, socially, financially and emotionally destructive. I have written books about it. I was lucky enough to know about deprogramming. One has been programmed (brainwashed) for however many years they have allowed it, and it takes an outside view, like that of a deprogrammer, a psychologist, or an experienced ex-cultist to help escape the cult (and, in many cases, the word "escape" is appropriate.)
A cult should be defined as a belief system that is compulsory in nature with zealous followers where punishments for disobedience are cruel or unusual.
@@Dog-Girl-Defect There would be organizations that associate themselves with religions that would be considered cults, yes. That's kind if the point though. Some cults associate themselves with established religions to make themselves seem legitimate. What we need to do is base the definition of a cult as one of experience, and the definition I propose does that.
@@AllergicToFantasy Are you getting your PhD in Clinical psychology? No? Then you have no business telling people they are delusional! If you are, you should be kicked out of your program! You aren't omniscient. You don't know what's the nature of Reality. And if someone has an experience of angels or spirits, you can't say "your experience isn't real." For context, I am getting my graduate degree in psychology. I know the DSM criteria for delusional disorder. And psychologists usually reserve it for extreme cases like when you think someone loves you, but they have a restraining order against you. Disorders have to have: disfunction, distress, deviance, and danger. Believing elves sit on your shoulder isn't a delusional DISORDER, unless it's getting in the way of functioning, causing distress to yourself, or hurting others. Any idiot can read through the DSM-5 and say "they're all this disorder," but that's usually wrong, very annoying, and can be harmful! People have been using psychological terms as a means to denigrate others for years. Slave owners said their slaves were mentally ill when they ran away. Sexist men "diagnosed" their wives with hysteria when they were being abused. And it's so annoying when people try to use psychological disorders to call people names.
This is a great video! I wasn't expecting much in such a short video but wow I'm really impressed at how much important information they were able to pack into a 26 minute video!

The last half of this is amazing. It described the danger of people being allowed to talk freely online, which Netflix feels is a cult because people talk about things not permitted within polite society. It reminded me of the 1st half, when a woman in a cult was being told if she left the cult these horrible things would happen... Makes you wonder, which one is the cult?
For anyone agreeing with your nonsense, I'll explain: There's nothing problematic with using the internet to read and discuss controversial topics. However, the internet is riddled with deceptive people that employ sophisms to spin things away from rational thought with the goal of bringing emotional (and irrational) responses from others. As most of people have to be well versed in rethorical, logical and scientific thought to see through this trick - and they are not - a lot of people fall prey to conmen, cultists and crazy conspiracy theories. Therefore, yes - the internet has become a catalist for crazy behaviour, and yes, it has to be regulated to curb this threat.
The Jehovah's witnesses policy of denying members bloid transfusions the kills an estimated 900 people (including children), yearly. That is one Jonestown massacre EACH year. But hey, they dress well and read the Bible.. that gets you of the hook everyday in Bible-thump land...
Dean Craig , yes. Jehovah Witness only read their Magazine from the Watchtower Cult and their Cult website JWorg but don’t read straight from the Bible with the exception of some verses that were twisted from their own changed & twisted bible which is incorrectly translated. Their leaders use fear tactics and encouraged their members to lie to police because they believe the police belong to Satan’s government. Even warn thousands of child abuse victims to never report their abuse and forgive their thousands serial Rapist Pedophiles! 1,006 in Australia alone not counting thousands and thousands of child abuse cases around the world!!
I think more awareness about Jehovah's witnesses is essential. Many inside that cult can't leave because if they do they will be shunned by families and friends inside. Please Netflix we need a documentary about the Jehovah witnesses religion.
exactly, when I was little there was a girl in my class at school who was a Jehovah’s witness. She wasn’t allowed to take part in any kind of celebrations, to play or be happy at all. It was so sad.
There is a lot of videos about Jehovah's Witnesses on TH-cam. I learned so much by watching them. An especially good source is the Telltale channel. It is run by an ex Jehovah's Witness. This guy gives a lot of information about the cult and why it is bad. He also talks about other religious groups as well. I think he is athiest now, but I am not entirely sure.
I appreciate all TH-cam commenters. Thank god y’all are here. Some of you are awesome and funny asf and some just a trolls and most are just reading our comments, yeah you thanks for reading this comment don’t let loneliness get to you
All I’m saying is, a lot of celebrities and people in politics are cult leaders. And the people in cults all thought the guy they were following was the good guy and thought the actual good guy was the bad guy. Remember that as you consume things and think that you’re certain in this world.
I've watched this in Netflix the first day its released... It's not like warning about cults, rather it feels more like "How to be a perfect flawless cult leader"
Everything was good in this video Till this person 10:20 He is the founder Acharya of Isckon Or I may say he revived the Sanatan dharma, which is from the beginning of humans. Cults main causes exploitation to people's but Isckon has made many millions of peoples leaving their bad habbits like intoxication, gambling, illicit relationships etc. And also made oeoples to progress in their spritual life. Cults dont stay for very long...but this is growing widely throughout the world like fire even after his disappearance. Its not a cult...This person came to save us. I hope this message will help you...Please don't get any wrong idea about him...Please
That is what being in a cult looks like It is not a cult because it promotes my religion but everything less is a cult.... My "swami" is the saviour. And you guys who studied the people affected by him are wrong smh
It's so scary to think that each and every one of us at some point have been susceptible to cult mentality. It's gross how people are preyed upon in the weakest momens.
That awkward moment you start a documentary about cults and footage from the old religious group from your childhood that you were half convicted MIGHT be a cult pops up multiple times in the opening sequence👀👀👀👀
Please, publish the one about pandemics! I’ve been talking about it with everyone, people really need to see it. This series is amazing, btw. Thank you for promoting it!
cults are strangely fascinating. i feel like it would be so easy to fall for the ideas and the promises and the "dear leader". it's safe to say we're better educated as a whole about these things! i was definitely taught these red flags as a child, and I'm not religious whatsoever.
my ex boyfriend's best friend went missing, they found him after a few days with a cult leader eating breakfast somewhere, the leader somehow got away with it he run and the police did not catch him, but the guy who i knew, who was so sweet and a good person was brainwashed... he didn't want to go back home.. before disappearing he was talking a lot about God and sum stuff to his family.. he is now okay ig... i am terrified
I’d also add Political Parties to this too, it may lack a one particular charismatic leader, but it is many hallmarks. Peer pressure from others including family, playing to vulnerable or hurt people, heavy indoctrination.
This explains how a cult can completely mess up many lives in the worst way possible and I wonder why all those people believe in everything Jim Jones told them. I hope people will take a lesson from this and think rationally.
Recognize the difference between a spiritual teacher and a cult leader. The difference is subtle. On the surface it appears the same, a single human speaking to a room or even a stadium full of people. The difference is in the intent, which is revealed through things like recruitment practices, do they actively seek more “members” and exile/ban those who leave from returning? That’s cult behaviour. A true spiritual teacher won’t mind if you wish to hang out, or if you wish to leave, and they would never say you cannot return. A spiritual teacher exudes an atmosphere of love and acceptance, not of radical reformation. Cult leaders want you to THINK/BELIEVE certain things that accommodate their agenda. Spiritual teachers guide you away from thought and into direct experience so you can come to your own conclusions about reality and the nature of self. It is a very important discernment to make, because one can lead you to peace and self-discovery, and the other leads you to violence, extremism and self-harm.
I agree, and this is why Scientology is not a cult. If you were to take a good look inside a scientology organization you would see that this is the case. I don't approve of cults and their way of doing, but scientology doesnt force you into anything. You can just learn about life and can get self betterment if you want, and people are getting better in their life because of it. Thats it. There is no enforcement of anything...
those survivors are so rad!!! I loved hearing what they had to say. I think it’ll really help people that have had similar journeys. Congratulations you all... y’all rule
Religion and cults are the same. The only difference is the founder is still alive in a cult. Once they die and the cult continues, it becomes a religion.
@@lilmoth227 Not really. The guys said that religion and cults are not similar. They said that cults are violent and brain washing. My point is that they are one in the same; violent and brainwashing.
This shit downplays the harm cults cause and before “you think religion don’t cause harm” no, I think cults cause a different kind of harm. We can and should talk about both but people love putting things into the same boxes and it makes that difficult. The BITE model is a good way to determine if a group is a cult or not, for those interested
According to the episode, the difference is time. I argue: the difference is moderate branches that appear in time. If a cult splits up into subgroups, allowing at least one of the stronger branches to be a moderate version, i'd call it "a religion". Otherwise I stick to "cult". From where I am standing: many religions are containers of groups with subgroups (and so on), some of which are cults. If leaving is something you can't comprehend and decide for, and if leaving means the group will attack you for it: you're probably in a cult. If they just frown at you for deciding against them, but leave you be overall: religion. I make this distinction because both words, religion and cult, are so powerful, they might as well have a useful meaning each (instead referring to the same thing).
Exactly. These docs give half truths to be sure not to step on their own beliefs. There are organized practices that could be considered cults that don’t follow anything but love and peace and knowledge and living away from societal norms and forced religions. But they didn’t mention that kind...🤷🏽♀️
I saw this episode a few years ago on Netflix and now wat hed it again. Got me then, got me even more now, since it feels a lot more personal now. With the two crazy years that passed, I also became indulged in some sort of cult, called the new age movement. I didn’t see it like that, but now I feel as I’m slowly waking up from some deceptions. It’s so incredibly hard to leave your old beliefs, nog knowing what your new ones are. I think we’re all looking for truth. All looking for love, trust, confidence. Those things that got you in the movement/cult in the first place. I wanna give all my respect for those who are walking away from their old environments, following what they know in their heart is true
Does anyone else find it interesting that the oldest cults still existing today weren’t mentioned in this documentary but ones who aren’t cults at all where? Was some of this documentary a reflection of conditioning or socialization/cults? Sometimes someone’s best interest IS to get away from their family so that they CAN have a chance to heal from the trauma….just because they’re family doesn’t mean they have your best interest or are good for you…..sometimes FAMILY is the cult…
Btw Osho's movement never was about being God or being worshiped. He literally said enjoy spiritualism & materialism together and that it is for everyone and dance and celebrate while you win at life. People freely left or stayed with their own choice. It was beautiful experiment of organic living that failed because of internal corruption.
the major difference between a religion and a cult is just the number of followers. irrationality, brain-washing, blind faith, indoctrination, hatred of “non-believers”, these are all common traits which makes both religions and cults dangerous for humanity

Facebook as well. That Teal Swan woman has a Facebook group called Teal Tribe and it's a bunch of lost and suicidal people clawing at each other for attention, especially for Teal's attention.

Difference between a religion and cult is that the *founder* is dead in a religion

No shame.
✌P*E*A*C*E✌
I grew up with an abusive step-father. All these cult leaders remind me of him. I like to think I can spot an abuser from a mile away.
I’m seeing these things also, with my stepfather and how close this hits home 🤭
They all have similar natures
When you're thinking that, it's likely someone not showing these traits comes along, and still is abusive, just packaged completely different. From an outward, violent narcissist to a covered narc, they all have similar traits, but you could not see it, until it's too late...
The narrator has the perfect voice for this
Isn't that LaKeith Steinfeld? He fits so well for this and the actor is so talented in every film, I've seen so far from him!
I recommend a book called Warlike & Peaceful Societies: The Interaction of Genes & Culture. It has a lot to say about the psychology behind this type of behaviour.

Something that would help is to look into spiritual narcissism. The belief that spiritual knowledge makes you superior to others. Not destructive like the Davidians, but mentally, socially, financially and emotionally destructive. I have written books about it. I was lucky enough to know about deprogramming. Yes definitely
A cult should be defined as a belief system that is compulsory in nature with zealous followers where punishments for disobedience are cruel or unusual.
Why?
"Religion" would still clump up with cults.
@@km1dash6 dude I'm tired of explaining this, you win.
@@AllergicToFantasy Are you getting your PhD in Clinical psychology? No? Then you have no business telling people they are delusional! If you are, you should be kicked out of your program! You aren't omniscient. You don't know what's the nature of Reality. And if someone has an experience of angels or spirits, you can't say "your experience isn't real."
For context, I am getting my graduate degree in psychology.

The last half of this is amazing. It reminded me of the 1st half, when a woman in a cult was being told if she left the cult these horrible things would happen... Makes you wonder, which one is the cult?
We found the cultist, people.
For anyone agreeing with your nonsense, I'll explain:
There's nothing problematic with using the internet to read and discuss controversial topics.

Exactly, and Eckhart Tolle is a great example. I can’t believe they included him in this, baffling.

Religion and cults are the same. The only difference is the founder is still alive in a cult. Once they die and the cult continues, it becomes a religion.
Yep that's what they said in the video
@@lilmoth227 Not really. The guys said that religion and cults are not similar. They said that cults are violent and brain washing.
My point is that they are one in the same; violent and brainwashing.
This shit downplays the harm cults cause
and before “you think religion don’t cause harm” no, I think cults cause a different kind of harm.
I'm 100% sure this is Lakeith Stanfield's voice

Great collab for both vox and Netflix
Thanks for making this free. Netflix you gained my respect.
Surprised there’s no mention of Scientology.
So, these are the steps for forming my own cult. I needed a list where I know how to do it right. Thank you.
Lakeith Stanfield did a fantastic job on the narration, really good series.
