      Jack Bridges Yes he does. I’m a few years younger than Ric and 90% of the gyms in the 70s were primarily for men. Women had there gyms like health spas and other establishments. I belonged to a small little local gym in my town and men and women mixed freely. No problems whatsoever. Talking, laughing, and flirting were almost like a part of your workout. NOT TODAY. The atmosphere is just the opposite.

    • @mariogiresi6792

      He’s living history. Speaking from experience I can tell you similar things took place in the sauna over at Jack Lalane’s too. But that was 1979. We enjoyed so much more freedom and fun back then in the gyms. In 2023 there’s nothing but restrictions.

    Just seeing this in September 2020, and it’s a wild coincidence that the interview opens with Ric talking about being alive or dead. A legend regardless - RIP.

    I don't agree with the assessment of Frank Zane. Yes, he was serious. But I've talked to him many times since the early 90s. I never found him to be 'negative'. He is extremely calm, is more like it. And Frank Zane shouldn't have to be bitter, because he is EXTREMELY popular to this day! Ask anyone who they would rather look like, and Frank Zane tops the list! Besides, while true Arnold is very charismatic, and deserves all the fame he ever got...but Frank Zane is totally devoted to his wife Christine. They have been married since 1967, and one would be hard-pressed to find bodybuilding marriages that are 50 years in the making.

    • @StreetTruckinTitan
      @StreetTruckinTitan 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Ric said Frank Zane didnt put himself out there and kept to himself. This isnt a negative discription of Frank. He just doesnt have a type A personality that Arnold has and got him more opportunities because of it.

    • @discernment8963
      @discernment8963 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@StreetTruckinTitan, That's exactly right. I didn't get any negativity either, just reality. My Dad was a Chemical Engineer basically a Rocket Scientist, Zane I believe has a Masters in Chemistry, they've got similar introverted research scientist personalities. Arnold's an extrovert with an entertainers personality. Apples2Oranges different not right/wrong/better/worse. My Dad to would occasionally shake his head at what some entertainers make as opposed to people serious people that broke their asses in school to. It is what it is Zane's certainly as respected a BBer as there is.

      @@gregthesplintercell What are you talking about? He lived to 76, and was using gear since the 60s. He was big and ripped his whole adult life, made a name in wrestling, bodybuilding, film, art, was around California from before the hippies, stayed through the 70s, 80s, 90, and 2000s, all the time being a pretty big deal. A definite nechie celebrity. He probably lived more in one of his years than ten of yours, and you want to sit and talk about how sad it is that he didn't live to 87,or 97? He's hardly someone who died young, after achieving nothing. I'd like to see your lives over such a time span.

    Didn't know people heavily involved in bodybuilding...the "forefathers"...also think there is such thing as "too big". Which I agree with. Most people still do look at bodybuilders as freaks. Maybe more so today seeing guys that go too far like Rich Piana and the others with their bloated bellies. And "Photoshopped looking bodies". Glad there's a "classic physique class" in competition and "Fitness". Where there's better symmetry.

    Ric is absolutely correct about Frank Zane--Frank lives here near me in La Mesa, which is just 15 minutes east of downtown San Diego, and periodically I have called Frank ovet the last 15 years to touch base, and Frank is always negative, surly, and even arrogant and condescending--in one conversation we had Frank started ripping Arnold's physique apart saying Arnold had no waist, that Arnold had a gut and should never have beaten him! And this was right around the time when Arnold would call him up and invite him to his yearly birthday party at the Govenor's mansion in Sacramento, all expenses paid, including round trip airfare!

    Ric was spot on with his assessment of Zane. Zane was pissed with everyone; Arnold, Franco, Pearl, Dickerson, Mentzer, etc... Read his books and you’ll “discover” a whiner; gets boring after awhile. Just crazy stuff that he pouts on. He says he had that Hollywood look, and wonders why he didn’t couldn’t get into movies like Arnold!? A true deadpan.

    Vlad Yudin is dull and odd. I dont know how he became one of the biggest bodybuilding companies spokesperson interviewing everyone. Of all the many people that would have been a much better fit Vlad was chosen as the guy. Makes no sense to me. He doesnt look like he works out or knows how to diet and train, he knows zero about bodybuilding drugs, and hes strange and boring with a very weird demeanour. He sucks and thats why I personally dont watch his interviews ever. Mr. Ric Drasin (old-time bodybuilding’s resident loudmouth) dismisses Frank Zane as being simply bitter; the consequence of Zane’s unique personality. Personally, I believe that Mr. Zane was just smarter than his 1960’s - 90’s colleagues. As such, he was aware of and openly critical of the nonsense, unfairness in judging events (lest we forget the ’80 and ’81 Mr. Olympia contests) and sometimes outrageous stupidity perpetuated in the sport.
    When the three-time Mr. Olympia winner Frank Zane, for example, says that Danny Padilla should have won the 1981 contest, then folks had better listen up (as he, rightfully so, feels the bitterness that Padilla, Platz and others must have felt at the time).
    Interestingly, I was a friend of the late Mike Mentzer, and I rooted for Mike to win against Frank in 1979 and certainly against Arnold, winner of the bogus 1980 Olympia. As a physics professor and a long-time
    participant in resistance-type training this is simply my opinion: take it or
    leave it, pump it or dump it.
