The Meter in your camera is what measures the reflected light in a scene. By fully understanding your metering modes you can get the correct exposer for your camera every time!
Personally I find metering so interesting and I had fun explaining it in this video. If you like the video please give me a thumbs up + comment below on future videos that you want to see.

So helpful! I'm pretty sure my camera is on evaluative metering right now, and I never knew the differences between all the options until right now! Definitely going to try out partial and center weighted metering! As always, thank you for being so gracious and helpful to all of us inspiring photographers. Can't tell you enough how much I enjoy all of your social media platforms and admire you.. 💕
GREAT INFO, thanks for taking us back to basics with metering modes: I find myself switching back between spot metering and matrix metering for my Nikon D750! Again, thanks for this
Wow! Truly inspired by watching this! Inspired because I learned more about my camera's "language". My recent struggle may be explained with correct metering choice as you just taught me. I am shooting indoors a large tractor that is Cat Yellow. That is not lemon yellow (as my images appear) but a warmer school bus yellow. White walls white ceiling cfl/tungsten mix. Adjusting light source accordingly...but get lemon yellow in my result. I think I had left it in spot metering and for hours tried every adjustment. To no avail still squishing lemons! Tomorrow I will focus the metering adjustments in hopes of getting the proper color. Thanks Jana! Woo hoo, I am inspired to keep learning!
WHAT! No wonder!!!!!!! Thank you so much for this, I think my eyes were just opened #mindblown
I want to say your explanation is the clearest one I have seen on metering so far. Thank you!
I love this video!! I suck at the tech side of things with my camera. More videos like this please :) xx
Excellent way to explain this. Thumbs up! Great format.
Yes. Reading from paper.. so pro.
Thank you Jana!! This was super helpful
Thanks so much for this! You are such an inspiration!!! Hope I get to participate in one of your workshops someday! #goals
Love this! Thanks!
Thank you! You are goals! 👏🏻🙌🏻
Yay! Im so glad you enjoyed it!
this was incredibly helpful. thank you Jana!!!!
Thank you!
Thanks for the good quick tip!
I use my Nikon camera on Matrix metering pretty much all the time. It works for everything except the some of the toughest lighting situations. I think it is the way to go, unless you want to meter for a very specific spot, then I use spot metering.
Great video Jana :-)
Thanks for this tips! Really helpful...
Love this! Would love if you could do a more detailed video on this- showing you in real life using the various meter options would be great. Maybe show examples of you shooting your husband in different settings? And show how to make all these changes on the actual camera. I'm a newbie and am lost at this term, but adore your style!
Chloe B Arnold :: Beyond Blessed Blog Why dont you try it by yourself 😊 Be creative and keep discovering 😊 Jana just gave you a great tip.

Hey Jana! Could you make a video about everything you like and or need in a 2nd shooter?
I feel like if Connie Britton and Faith Hill had a baby, it would be you!! Soooo pretty. And I love the videos.
Great explanation!!!
I loved this video and it was very helpful. The part where she said "The truth is, we don't really know" cracked me up though.
Thank you Jana! You truly rock. I love the way you made it so clear for me...after 5 years, LOL.

Omg your style and your beautiful please do a video how to style please 👸🏼✨💞
Best metering video ever. Under 5 minutes, laymen terms. Perfect.
How do the others manage to drag it out to 40 minutes. Yawn o rama
can you do a similar video on focusing?
yes!
yes please
Pls explane canon 1300d camera setting and other features
How would I describe metering? Your video is very informative but I'm still stuck as to how I would describe metering.
I thought matrix is an average of the different zones in the scene?
yes for Nikon
You look like a real life Elena Fisher from the game Uncharted 4! 😻
Awesome will definitely use #AliciaHitePhotography 🙌🏻
can you do a video on ISO and F stop and AV
I actually have one! Its a really good one on the earlier videos
Canon's default metering mode is Evaluative, not Partial 1:41.
Matrix Metering or Evaluative Metering mode is the default metering mode on most Nikon and Canon DSLRs.
You (not we) can't explain Evaluative Metering because you did not do your research before filming this.
"Evaluative metering is the mostly used automatic metering mode in everyday photography and can be applied in most shooting scenarios.
As its name suggests, it takes a series of readings in zones that cover the entire frame, and then calculates the overall average exposure value.
Since Evaluative metering takes into account the entire frame when determining the exposure, it is useful for low-contrast subjects such as when shooting with front lighting or low-contrast landscape." - www.canon.com.hk/en/club/article/itemDetail.do?itemId=10437
Your explanations are very poor. Keep learning!
So, for a Bride with a white dress in bright light, which metering mode would you go with ?
Exactly! And I’m mot even a Canon shooter. Lol. She had to read it, lol
I read a lot that the percentage are more like 1% and 10-15% being spot and partial. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metering_mode
love the accent.....
.please make a video about wedding poses
Okay! Also check out the blog today as I have 4 tips pn how to capture real emotion in photographs www.janawilliamsphotographyblog.com
what is metering timer?
i have options like 8 sec, 16 sec, 1 min, 10 mins and 30 mins.. it is there in my canon 80D
Thanks , From Samantha
Im feeling stupid as fuck 'cus until now i always thought that metering was related to focusing area...
Omg really
I could read a book and learn faster
Cameras definitely turn me on! Add cinnamon rolls to that list too 😔.
It depends on what you shoot and not about what you personally choose to do. Seems you don’t know well your metering, you had to read. 🤷🏻♂️
Hot.
ur so beautiful..
Jake Luvubabz I said the same thing lol
Jake Luvubabz XT
Will Russians pay me 🤣🤣🤣
Okay wtf 😂😂 nobody understands what matrix metering mode means so you don't recommend it? I just watched a video a few minutes ago where the presenter knew what it is.. why would you say that?
Oh must be so great to be a white blonde distressed photographer obsessed with shallow fine art ☝️️pls excuse my blunt vulgarity ☺️
