What about that fabulous engine, the Napier Sabre H24 It certainly helped the Tempest reach those speeds. I hold this plane in high esteem. My Uncle Phil [Vivien Phillips DSO] was being moved from Stalagluft 3 where he was a dig supervisor in the great escape tunnels, on what was called the long march. A Tempest attacked the column and Phil had it away on his toes with the camp forger and escaped across Germany into France where he got to the British Forces.

Another attribute was the exceptionally clean airframe.
One Tempest pilot account that I read stated that the FW190's favourite escape maneuver was to go into a vertical dive to escape it's opponent but that was a huge mistake with the Tempest because it would accelerate in the dive so quickly it could overtake the 190 if the power wasn't pulled back!

The Tempest was born out of the problems they had with the Typhoon due to compressibility caused by the thick wing section thought to be correct at that time.
The former consequently had a thinner wing with semi elliptical planform which transformed the way it flew.

What I like the most about you at this point is that unlike a lot of your contemporaries you actually know how to pronounce the name of the airplanes that you are talking about. Your speech is fine, sir. Nice presentation. The RAF Tempest vaguely reminds me of the USAAF P-47, but I suspect that's only because of (side view) fuselage thickness in proportion to her bubble canopy. Great looking fighter.

  • @Mike-kc8rl

A beautiful design from the famous Hawker stable, and came from the Typhoon but with a laminar flow wing . The Napier Sabre H24 engine was also the most powerful piston engine at the time ,rated at 2350 bhp, gave the Tempest V/V1 a top speed of 435 mph in level flight. The Tempest would gain altitude and dive in on the V1s and would easily reach speeds of 500 + mph . The Sabre engines were extremely complex, but in war, you went for the best performance, whatever the cost!
The Tempest ll came along with the Bristol Centaurus 18 cylinder sleeve valve that had 2580 bhp giving even greater speed. The Navy took it on as Sea Fury! These and the Spitfire MK 24s were the pinnacle of piston engine development and had gone as far as a propeller driven Airframe could go?

I really enjoyed Pierre Clostermann's book on the tempest and more recently had the chance to read the experiences of C.J. Sheddan in "Tempest Pilot" (co-authored with Norman Franks). The author presents as quite a character himself but if you look beyond some of his more interesting personal quirks, he offers a great perspective on flying both the Typhoon and the Tempest...It wasn't for the faint of heart and those that did had interesting reactions when they had the chance to go back and fly the Spitfire....

To me, this fighter is a mix of Hurricane and Spitfire, with the cockpit placed on top of the fuselage for great vision, massive engine, and Hurricane type sturdy wings, but that's just me.
I made an Airfix model of it many, many moons ago in the late 50's and 60's, along with the Spitfire , Hurricane and other models plus German aircraft to hang from my ceiling on thing cotton. Also German tanks, such as of course the Tiger I and Panther etc.as I was well into this modelling hobby......😀

The tail problem in the Typhoon was caused by anti flutter weights becoming detached and causing terminal vibrations. It didn't take that long to rectify, but the failures were spectacular and obviously fatal. Far more Typhoons and pilots were lost to anti aircraft fire as they operated at low level and there was no height for a bailout. Any day the Typhoons could not fly due to low cloud was a bad day for the allied armour.
