Oh one of my favorite scenes in the series and Matt and Claire were so amazing! This was the start of the rift between them that climaxed in the final episode of season 2!
Claire Foy was so brilliant. The thing I noticed is that she was so in character that the micro expressions matched. Bad actors leak. She was, even against stiff competition, my favorite queen.
People have to remember this is a fictional drama based on real events. This is a great scene, but it’s unlikely it ever happened in reality. Philip was a royal long before marrying Elizabeth. He understood the importance of the coronation and his role and from all real accounts never put up any sort of resistance to paying homage to his wife as queen.
Um yeah but he also understood what happened to royals who were aloof and out of step. What he says in the fictionalized scene about Greece and his grandfather are true historic events.
Yes if you watch the real life footage of the coronation he bounds up the stairs, says his vows in a clear unhesitating voice, then kisses her on the cheek and gives her a big grin. Far from having a problem with it, he was obviously proud as punch of her.
Actually something like this probably did happen a lot of the arguments they have were based on real ones but with different reasons such as the walk behind her one in Greece the royal couple walked side by side with the ruleing member on the outside for better vewie it was about safety more then rank sense it ment thir guards could get to both more quickly without haveing to deal with a gap then there was the last name one she had a uncle who had kids her name would live in his wouldent sense his older brother had died diring the war

I know it’s a drama with dialogue that was created by writers and not factual, but this series made Her Majesty, to me at least, more real. It made you wonder what conversations were really had. She also was made to look strong and fierce. A side not seen by us very often.
I watched an interview of his talking about the end of WW2. He was on a ship in the Bay of Tokyo at the time of the signing of the peace agreement. He was 73 during the interview and extremely well spoken, could remember everything, and very easily handled the reporter with amusement and polite distain. The reporter had a definite agenda that Phillip avoided with ease. He was obviously a very smart charismatic man who loved action. He was fascinating to listen too. He put no one down during the interview, and he decreased his role in his narrative of events to just an observer. This was not the case and his war record was exemplary. He was not stupid or a narcissist. After having to listen to these modern royals talk endlessly about themselves and how important they are and how picked on they are, it makes you wonder if he's related to any of them but Anne. I recommend watching the interview. It is a shame he wasn't allowed to due more interviews like that.
Philip had it tough. Greece is one of the poorest countries in Europe and correspondingly, the Greek Royals were literally the Church Mice of Europe....The Greek Royals were exiled twice....his Mother's family the Mountbattens (Battenbergs) were amazing....not royal but noble and RELATED to a bunch of royals. Philip's Great Aunt was Russian Empress Alexandra, wife of Nicholas...and his Aunt Louise was Queen of Sweden.
Yeah the real Philip was so poor when he was courting Elizabeth that he didn't even have enough money to buy her an engagement ring. Luckily his mum, Princess Alice, came to the rescue and gave him some of her jewellery so that Philip could use one of the diamonds to have a ring made. A true love match.
@@theshillneckedlizard8364 On The CROWN, Alice is shown pawning one of her (very valuable) jewels to get the money to help her religious order. The pawn broker assumes she's a liar and a thief ...
@@maestroclassico5801 Yeah, she really did sell most of her jewellery to found her religious order, not to pawnbrokers though, to private buyers. @@theshillneckedlizard8364 Have you seen the episode? I think it's season 3....Jane Lapotaire who played her, was fantastic. We're not that poor. And a big reason we abolished the monarchy is because Queen Frederica was a greedy, German cow and was taxing everything too much. I really liked Constantine though. And his kids are a lot better behaved than Elizabeth's.
I can't help but compare this show to ITV/PBS' "Victoria" ("The Crown" came out not long after, and they're both about British queens from the begining of their reign, surrounded by people thinking they're not up to the job - there's a lot of similarities!) and the one thing I never understood was why in "Victoria", Prince Albert is an incredibly proudful man, but still knows the difference between his wife and his queen, yet in "The Crown", 100 years later when equality has come on leaps and bounds, they've ramoed up Philip's pride to the point he won't even kneel to his queen, something the _real_ Philip would never have considered.... It's a really strange choice, and I don't get it.
The actions that Philip describe here that took place in Greece would never happen in England. England had a very unique relationship with its Queens and Kings for better or for worse. The English civil war was more government vs the Crown than the people vs the Crown that gets thrown around in history books. The writing in the show is overall amazing. But here and there, there is some over the top writing.
He probably expected to at least be master of his household not realizing or refusing to realize it will never be his. In this case queen Elizabeth is the male line descendant so she is both master and ruler of the house and royal family not him.
If this is historically accurate, then Phillip was not qualified for the job he signed up for. Although it seems that Elizabeth adored him as her soulmate, he always seems to be making her job harder, rather than easier. Even her headstrong grandmother bows to her when George VI dies and she is now Queen. Phillip signs up to play the game, but then complains about the rules to whole time he’s playing.
This scene never happened. The real Phillip had a large role in planning Elizabeth's coronation, and happily kneeled to her during the ceremony and gave her a big kiss on the cheek when he got up.
If Victoria could have Albert do it..... As Queen Mary said. All sacrifice to the Crown. It must prevail. You would think a scion of a failed monarchy would have gotten it. But, pride is a hard thing.

And that'd be fine
I wonder if this truly happened, likely we will never know.
I’d say it’s unlikely this happened. Prince Philip was already a Royal before marrying her and he would’ve known the system and duties as the consort.
I don’t believe that the queen could ever dare to ask the man to kneel who once threatened the queen to chuck her out of the car Bcz the queen was complaining him driving the car too fast! As far as I know Philip, he would have stopped talking to the queen almost forever, if she ever forced him to kneel! This scene is hard to believe, very well played though! 👌🏻
You don’t know anything, shut up
You married a queen, she's walks into a room you always bow down. It's out of respect for the queen.
It’s out of respect for the crown, not the person
Nope.
The monarchy shouldn't even exist, there should be no respect for glorified celebrities.
Better to live in exile with one’s dignity in tact than to kneel and have none for the rest of your life.
wow, from advocating to include trade unionists, to good ol fashioned sexism in about 30s
He should kneel to her because she is his wife and the mother of his children.
He has Dragon
he was more royal then the queen so yeah naturally he didn't like it. as he was descended from royalty on both sides and she was descended from aristocracy and royalty
In the show, yeah. IRL this never happened. The Queen & The Duke of Edinburgh had their issues, but the show dials it up to 11.
@@Myne1001how do you know? The crown was right about the Queen throwing things at Philip as that really happened. So they obviously had a fiery relationship.
He was not more "royal" than the queen. Sure, both sides of his family were royalty, but the Greek royal family was very young compared to her ancestry stretching back a thousand years.
That's not even the point of this scene though.
Peasants defending this mess 😂😂😂😂 how do people feel that this family is somehow better than them is beyond comprehension 🤷🏽♀️😂
my bad, I thought this daemon
Naw, that never happened. Common sense wins.
Great actors but is a drama. Not reality
If anyone was wondering, skip the last two seasons of game of thrones, its just this.
🤣🤣Husband's when you marry real Queens understand you kneal or it's off with your head.
Both actors looked like they were trying not to laugh in this scene! Which is odd as it’s not a funny scene at all.
Lost your head? Well don't come bleeding to me as I'll be in an orange crate on my way out of this dump! 😂😂😂
This dude always having problems with being king (consort) lol.
Bend the knee.
The rouge Prince
She knew a wealthy man wouldn’t subject to such humiliation so she married a poor boy
“Now go make me a sandwich”
women need to understand that this is the only purpose they serve lmao 🤣
Bend the knee!
She was so oblivious to everything
