Easy Injector Pump Rebuild - Perkins 4.108 Engine Maintenance

- In this episode, we swap the seals on our leaky diesel pump! Learning how to do complex engine repairs ourselves is our way of preparing to cruise around the world. When you're in the middle of nowhere, you can't just call up a mechanic to fix things for you.
The Perkins 4.108 is one of the most used diesel engines in boats from the 70s and 80s. The Lucas Delphi CAV DPA Pump (aka the high pressure diesel pump) powers this engine, but can be a fatal weak point as well if not maintained.
When leaks happen, do you know how to fix them?

Here’s a fun behind the scenes fact, we actually did this repair back in 2020, but decided to refilm much of this episode because of a leak on our exhaust manifold. But since we did the initial repair, our pump has not had any leaks or issues so we’re very confident in our work!

Nicely produced and informative! Wish I️ had a Perkins and it would have been even more useful!
Well done!
Thanks 😊
WOW your still around I always look for your videos I thought you might sailed off the edge of earth
Not yet but hopefully someday! 😉
Love your videos! Well done. I'm rebuilding a 4.108 in my basement to go in my Westsail 32, great how easy they are to work on. Agree on Parts 4 Engines, great selection of parts, they prices are good and everything I've bought has shipped quickly from the UK.
Thank you for watching and good luck on the rebuild!
You did a good job.
Thanks! 😊
Good job. I'm so glad y'all know how to fix things. Some of us have learned how to fix things the hard way while out at sea.
It's much easier nowadays with TH-cam too ;)
Wow, that was a great job!!! you make it look so easy, but i know it's not!!! keep the videos coming!!! love you both!!!
It’s really not that hard!! 😁 but thanks for watching!!
Another great video!
Thanks #1 fan! 😉
Does anyone know the correct pressure setting for the injectors of a 4.108? I tested some today they open around 125/135bar…
Idont have info or the corect settng or manual. If anyone knows let me know please.
I haven’t read through the full manual but it may be in here www.fujiyachts.net/manuals/Perkins%204108%20Workshop%20Manual.pdf
@@twohalf-hitches thnx for the link. I had a look trought it yesterday evening, it does not mention anything about the injectors
If you're on Facebook, there's a group for Perkin's engines, someone recently shared the workshop manual for this pump that includes the test procedures facebook.com/groups/1407531859540143/
@@twohalf-hitches thnx i am going to have a look there.
1:28 Diesel in the fuel does not cause a run away condition. Even if you filled the engine to the valve cover. Not going to run away.
Diesel in the oil does, and it’s happened to many
Sailing Avocet is one example th-cam.com/video/5VwjzjYv0nM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=HQ3EHTttxX6IZXkK
@@twohalf-hitches Just to add to that, another probably even more common cause of diesel in the oil is the low pressure lift pump having a bad diaphragm.
Yes that’s another possible cause
