Classic Boy Scout Axe Sharpening Trick

  • This is a classic technique for sharpening your axe or hatchet when you're in the wilderness. Using simple materials that you can source from the environment around you and a couple of items that you pack with you, it's an easy way to effectively put a keen edge on your cutting tool. While this is still taught to some Boy Scout troops, not everyone knows this technique and it is certainly useful to the Bushcrafter or survival minded person.

Good tip, and I remember it from my scouting days. Our Scout Master also had us al acquire a little round stone, along with a flat stone and we made a pouch that allowed us to keep them in our pack. One for our camp knife and pocket knife. The other, round, for our hatchet. We carried our hatchet on our belt opposite of our camp knife, very proudly I might add. A hatchet around camp is perhaps one of your most important tools. As we progressed and our packs allowed. Several of us even obtained a simple folding saw that was kept with our pack. On another note your period attire is fantastic... woolen trousers and shirt, suspenders and woolen hat. The other prize item was a wool coat...the scout coat was solid red. Many of us sought after a red and black plaid to use during hunting season [all was before camo attire]. As the weather changed. We made a poncho from a old [ military] woolen blanket. You could wear a thick leather belt on the outside which had your camp knife and hatchet on it plus closed it up [the poncho] on the sides. Between it and your wool coat. They had to adjourned with the patches of the major camps you attended. Those were good days... camp skills, lead to hunting skills, fishing skills, adapting to the outdoors.

@@WayPointSurvival You are welcome. Watching these Boy Scout related videos got me to thinking about one of the things I really enjoyed about my time in Boy Scouts and that is the skill of orienteering through use of map and compass. I was the only one in my troop that liked it (everyone else hated it). I was pretty good at it back then (although I could stand to brush up on it). This brings me to a request, would you consider doing a video detailing orienteering with a map and compass? With all the GPS technology available today, I feel people have become to dependant on that and orienteering would be a good skill to have in the event the GPS technology is not available for whatever reason. This is just an idea as I know I would enjoy a refresher on this subject. Thanks again for all the effort you put into making these videos as well as teaching survival courses!

Never seen it done that way. I've always done it by hand and file away from the edge. But then again I'm an old pipe fitter from years back. 15 years experience grinding angles on 2 pipe. Using the final hours and hours a day. And making all kinds of crap. When filing a way you just have to worry about the little burr... but you learn how to knock it off pretty easy. They can only cut you from One Direction. I've made them sharp enough to cut paper. A lot of new axes you really have to grind down. It's a lot of work but it's sure worth it when you get there

Good tip. Sometimes when one watches type like this at home they seem like safety overkill. But when you're out in the field, you are often cold, tired and/or distracted. It's very easy injure your self far away from quick medical care.
Just a quick note, when using an axe or hatchet to hammer with you might want to remove the mask. It seems counter intuitive, but the force of repeated hammer blows will cause the blade to chop through the welt and stitching of your mask.

    • @WayPointSurvival
      @WayPointSurvival  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes. Good point. However, the exception to this rule is if the welt is riveted on with copper rivets. Still, you do want to be careful and if you're going to be hammering a lot with it it is best to remove the mask.

I like your videos...they remind me of the old days, but your camp seems contrived and a bit set-up.
Another thing...I've been camping in all sorts of climates and northern forests, and I found that a great many of the "Boy Scout bushcraft" tips seem to be written by armchair woodsmen. The tips might work, but are usually inefficient and require way too much preparation for a simple task. When in the bush, I will use a stone (if I forgot my pocket sharpener) to put an edge back on my axe, and the fancy axe holder takes more time to set up than the actual sharpening. Typical armchair bushcraft advice.
I will often go back to my old outdoor scout cooking books, or "survival" manuals(from the '50's)...for a good laugh...but not much practical advice.

I think a lot of other peoples experience with Scouts were a lot different than mine. We never did anything. In our area it was run by the parents and the father's didn't stick around that long being involved with it. They had to work too much. I remember our Scout meetings being at someone's house and their mom being the Den leader. Now when I got in the Boy Scouts that was a whole nother story. It was a cranky old guy that turned out to be a straight-out pedo. Soon as my parents heard the rumors I was out of there. Luckily I wasn't in his special circle of boys. I was in the group that had to sit in his basement reading boys life, while his "A" group... received special instruction behind the barn. I remember when the Scandal came out the police covered for him said he was a pillar of the community and trusted scoutmaster for over 45 years. They wouldn't do anything about it. I think there was about eight boys involved. That shit wouldn't fly today. I always wished I had been in a group somewhere cool where we could have gone camping and there was actually good people running it. All I got was a book. Had to do everything myself in front of a parent and have them sign a piece of paper to get my merit badge. I think my parents were harder than anyone. A lot of times they didn't even understand what I was doing.

Well there is a law suit going on currently. So those unfortunate issues can be resolved.

@@ronthompson2366 you can't resolve issues like that with money. A lot of those boys lives were destroyed. God only knows how many of them committed suicide. And besides, is it really the organization's fault? When they had reports of someone doing something bad they put them on a list and wouldn't work with them anymore. I don't know if they kick this guy out of the Boy Scouts or not. I never really heard after that. I'm just saying charges were filed against him as far as I know. I really don't know what people expect from a big organization that is worldwide. They set up a program. Basically a guidebook. With a list of activities a volunteer can do to help local boys. It really is up to the group of parents in that area whether or not they are going to be involved and who is going to be the scoutmaster. Shouldn't the parents have investigated these people? I mean sure once they're in there in. And you're supposed to have a certain number of parents volunteering to help. We didn't have a lot of enthusiasm here. Most people have jobs. They want to send their kids to something good but they don't have time to do it themselves. And bad people have always looked for opportunities to get it intended victims. Which really makes sense. If you're into race cars and love race cars you're going to hang around the track. If you love women then you hang around where women go and try to pick them up. And if you are in to children historically you get with their single mother, or become a coach or scoutmaster. But I really don't see why bankrupting this organization that merely sold handbooks and merchandise is going to solve any of the problems. In fact let's look at the Supreme Court and Ruth Bader Ginsburg in particular who aided and suing the Boy Scouts and forcing them to allow homosexuals as Scout Masters. Gay men in multiple surveys have admitted to being with boys under the legal age limit. Over 80% of them admit to it. There's a large number of them that outright say they believe it's right and there are clubs they join. It's a worldwide thing. Hollywood normalized homosexuality. But only to use it as a stepping stone to pedophilia. At this point the entire lawsuits about money. The organization owns the land the boys would go to summer camp on. About a billion dollars worth of land. They want to force them to sell it at an auction where they can buy it up pretty cheap themselves. And then they will turn around and sell the land to places like China for a profit. And make no mistake the victims May receive some money but the lawyers are going to receive a hell of a lot more. Do I want money sure, am I going to get it probably not. Would it matter if I did? Not for what happened back then that I witnessed. Money always helps people out in the Here and Now. Some of those boys have probably kneaded therapy or been on therapy for decades. I really don't think anything's going to be resolved other than China picking up some Choice land here in the United States. A few people receiving some money. And law firms getting even richer.

@@captainfragger6295 Ummm, I only wanted the individual to know that there is some action being taken currently. The decision to use the resource or not is not my decision. It's up to them. As to whether or not it resolves anything or is enough... well again that is something that those individuals are going to have have to decide. It was 1950 when I was in the scouts, we weren't a big troop. It was through the church my folks attended. It offered us a chance to go camping and fishing. All the parents knew one another and yes our Scout Master. Our fathers were always invited to join our camping trips and assist with the bigger camps. Which they did if work allowed. I can tell you that it would not have gone over well had any sort of issue occurred different times.... and well I will leave it at that. I find many things about how people think about many things in today's society. But I am not here to get into that with you or anyone else. It's the wrong forum for the discussion. So again I offered a resource, accept it or not. That decision is not mine to make. But I am going to offer a suggestion. Volunteer and be the difference to correct a wrong and lead . Vice sitting on the sidelines and taking no action at all other than complaining. Make time in your busy schedule. Scouting was more than just camping and learning outdoor skills. It was about teaching young men to be prepared and to follow the scout oath. To be better citizens, the rest... camping, fishing, knot trying, canoeing... all that was just fun..but also... team building skills.

@@ronthompson2366 sounds like you had what I hear a lot of people have which is the way it should have been for everyone. I cannot volunteer my knees need replacement and I have bad health. I go camping out of my car or off my motorcycle because I am handicapped and can't walk very far. Few years ago I used to go all the time. I love hiking through the woods. I miss being able to walk.

Doesn't really look that handy. Seems like the peg gets in the way of the file a lot. Also, you're forced to sharpen one side of the edge with your off hand, making it hard to get a consistent angle.

It works pretty well and it's one of the recommended ways to sharpen your axe in the old Boy Scout manuals. How handy it is, I suppose, is up to the individual. Thank you for watching and commenting!

@@WayPointSurvival check out timestamp 4:54 where you bump your file into the peg. The edge is right over the peg, you can't get a good stroke in anyway. At 5:21 you can see the wobbly stroking that happens when you use your left hand. Either you implemented the method in the handbook poorly, or the method in the handbook is not good.
