    Great run through of lots of basics. One thing I would add is for metallic threads to use a special needle, which is designed to cope better with its unusual texture

    • @CreatedByGwen
      @CreatedByGwen  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Ohhh thank you so so much for sharing this here, I did not know that you could get a special needle for the metallic thread and will definitely seek one out. I'd love to use them more and if I can avoid the frustration just by switching out my needle I'm up for that! The metallic thread texture is the weirdest thing ever.

    I put my needles for paper in a Rx bottle that is labeled “paper”. I save my older rotary blades also, and keep them in clear boxes, per size, and label them for paper also. Rotary blades and a Flex Curve ruler make great waves for ocean/beach scenes.

    Thank you so very much for making this video. It is such a big help. I have only tried machine stitching on layouts a couple of times. I mainly add hand stitching but that can be very time consuming. I think my biggest problem is I can be a bit afraid I machine stitching on paper but I think you guide here will help me with that. I do have a Janome Sewing Machine I actually purchased from Aldi just so I can use for my paper craft and it does seem to run well and only cost me $99. I do have a larger Jamone that I have had for many years but I just use that I have used to sew lots of clothes when my boys were small. It is about 34 years old now but I thought I would just keep that one for sewing fabric. Thank you also for showing us all your beautiful projects you have create with stitching. They are all amazing ideas.🙂❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

      Hey Maree! I'm so glad this has been helpful and you're excited to give stitching by machine another try - I love the look of hand stitching but it does take a long time. What a great deal to pick up a machine for $99, Aldi is so so good isn't it! I am a big fan of Janome machines, they just last and last. It's always nice to see you by pop the channel and say hello 🌸

    This is an EXCELLENt tutorial, Gwen! You have given clear and thorough instructions. I have done some stitching on my cards and love the look. I tend to lean towards a bit wonky and leave the start and stop threads long. The tips about the thread and needle are very helpful. I have just been using what I have on hand so I will be looking for a heavier weight thread and needles. I will definitely save this video.

      @CreatedByGwen  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm so glad you added this info here Mary, I have no experience with the 'mini' machines but if anyone was going to make a good one it would be Janome... I really love their machines. Is it a handheld one? I'd love to know, I'm thinking now (after making this video) that mini machine and handheld ones are 2 different things.

    • @marybethcully5883
      @marybethcully5883 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@CreatedByGwen No it’s not a hand held just a very (10 inch wide by 9 inches wide) small version of their regular machine (probably the simplest one..). I can change stitch length of straight stitch and zigzag stitch and thread tension. My foot peddle is so small I can actually press it using my hand…which works but I prefer to use my foot. It truly just looks like a small sewing machine ( Amazon carries it)…it was a birthday gift from my husband who saw it and thought I would like it for paper. It a sturdy machine, I have had it about 8 years and it still works great. The only issue is threading the needles is a bit awkward but once you do it a few times it gets easier. I am looking forward to trying the heavier thread just to see the difference. By the way I love that thread pulling trick…it works great and so much better than back and forth stitch.🥰

    • @CreatedByGwen
      @CreatedByGwen  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you so much for sharing this extra info, it's SUPER helpful for others and me to know because I do get asked all the time about the smaller machines. At first I thought the handheld ones and 'small' ones were the same thing, clearly not and from what you're saying these smaller (but proper) machines could be a really great option. I love pulling the thread through rather than back and forth stitch, the look is so much cleaner. You can also tie them in a knot at the back if you want but I never bother with that. Thanks for popping by the channel today and sharing your experience with us all. I am super thankful for that. 🌸 @@marybethcully5883

      Unfortunately with machines you do get what you pay for, so it could be that the machine is not working as it should. That may not be the case, a couple of other things to check come to mind. 1. Check that the bobbin is positioned properly, pay special attention to the position of the thread and how it feeds up through to the needle. 2. Check that the thread itself that you have put on the bobbin is threaded evenly, if it's bunched or uneven that could be affecting things. 3. Check your tension is not too loose, it may need tightening slightly (this would be my first guess at your problem - try this first).

    Great Vid Gwen!
    I have a question - do you sew through adhesive?
    Glue & tape?
    I know you sew through puffy stickers which do have glue on them.
    Does your needle get gummed up?
    I’ll check the link for the remover you mentioned in the vid.

      Hey lovely.. liquid glue that is TOTALLY dry is fine to stitch through, but tape should be avoided at all costs. I think in the video I said that doing that was worse than taking your hubby to the craft store 🤣 Avoid it at all costs 😜 Puffy stickers do cause a little bit of gum on the needle, that's why you need the remover. I clean my needle pretty frequently.

      There are needles that are designed for stitching through sticky things like tape and glue.

      I actually prefer the denim one with this thicker thread and it does not do well with wet glue or tape. If you are just using regular thread I'm sure you could go with those options, but for me, I much prefer the look of the thicker thread, I feel like it stands out on projects much more. Appreciate you mentioning this here for others though, especially those who are a little more experienced like you and are looking for other needle options. @@Lovelyforlife1

      It’s fine, just keep baby wipes nearby

    You don’t need a dedicated machine for paper. We have been using paper on machines for years. I have embroidered on paper for cards.

      Yes, I agree. A lot of people are precious about their fabric machines, but sewing on paper is not going to break or harm anything at all. Appreciate you commenting this here to reassure people. I only have a separate machine because I can, it's absolutely not necessary.

    I do not think there is any brand of machine that would void a warranty because you used another brand of needle. Schmetz, Organ, Klasse, all make great needles.

    • @CreatedByGwen
      @CreatedByGwen  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Maybe not, but maybe. I know for a fact Silhouette won't let you use any other branded tools (even mats) on their machines without voiding warrantee and think about your car warrantee, guaranteed parts only. I'd never risk it personally so that's what I recommend for my viewers. Not saying that those brands don't make perfectly good needles, just making people fully aware of any potential risk. I do appreciate you popping by today Helen and sharing your thoughts 🎀

      @@CreatedByGwen I have been using sewing machines for over 40 years, no manufacturer limits which needles or thread you can use. They may specify a particular type of needle, but these can come from a variety of suppliers. If they tried this we would just buy from another manufacturer. Look at Brother's attempt to make people take out a subscription service to use their latest embroidery machine. No one would buy it until they changed their policy and allowed people to load their own designs

      All very interesting!! Manufacturers warrantees are a minefield and who even reads all that fine print anyway 🤣 It is nice to know that people power does help shape policy, that's a win.

    While my stitches look fine on fabric, the backside stitches look weird on paper. The top side stitching looks fine, though.

      There are a couple of things that come to mind that you could check 1. Check that the bobbin is positioned properly, pay special attention to the position of the thread and how it feeds up through to the needle. Check your manual - sometimes the thread is feeding up to the needle the wrong way, pay special attention to that. 2. Check that the thread itself that you have put on the bobbin is threaded evenly, if it's bunched or uneven that could be affecting things. If I had to guess, it's the way the bobbin in positioned. I've been caught before too, thinking it was in correctly when in fact it was not right at all.
