Walter has been at the forefront of two or three music sub-genres. Melodic hardcore (he wrote and played the best album of the breed Start Today), formed Quicksand and Slip just fucked everyone up with its genius and completely new style (post-hardcore - not a great name, but he is THEE guy), then he did Rival Schools and was ahead of what came soon after (Pedals is also a pretty perfect album that most people don’t know about), then Dead Heavens, solo album, Walking Concert, etc. He’s pretty fucking great. Funny, nice guy too. Oh yeah, he’s also a member of Youth of Today.
Thomas, absolutely. I was 16 when Slip came out and we were all blown away. I immediately said "It's Fugazi and Helmet thrown into a blender!" Still one of my absolute favorite albums of all time. Also has always seemed like a great guy. And his bass playing for Youth of Today is underrated! Simple lines, but got such a fat sound from that P-bass. One of my heroes, Walter.
What a super thoughtful conversation. As long as it was, I didn't want it to end. Walter is a gem! Have him back sometime to dive into Rival Schools, Walking Concert, his solo song writing.... and more gear talk, please! :)
I've loved nearly everything this dude has ever done. I bought the Rival Schools album at Best Buy when it came out for like $10 because I thought the name was a funny and creative reference and the album art was cool, then like an obsession started, lol.
I got to meet Walter after a Rival Schools show. They did this Over the Top arm wrestling thing. He was the nicest guy. Wish I would have gotten a picture with him. Incredible music. Quicksand is a band I can always go back to again and again.
This long form is really good. Lots of interesting stuff to hear from the person who sings and writes the music you listen regularly. Having said that, please invite more, Mark Tremonti.
@@josepharthurofficial Btw, as a metalhead in a foreign land; I didn't know you are were an artist. Watched your recent performance w/ that looping gear and surprised that you're really really good; plain good for the ears. You're probably some legendary artist; but awesome that you still put out great sound.
"These things can't be substantiated" Go talk to Buzz Aldrin "I believe in fantastical things" Oh yeah, ask him about the Christ, he'll close down so fast it would make your head spin!

The man can do no wrong, he's always ahead of the game and an innovator. Shout out to Vanishing Life, one of his most underrated projects
