I have been learning Harp for just over 1 year, and this is probably one of THE most important videos I have seen about improvising! FANTASTIC!!!! Thank you!
Oh this was absolutely brilliant! I've never EVER been able to improvise: it has filled me with terror - but I've just watched this fabulous lesson and it's gone straight to my favourite videos! So much FUN! I've just started learning the harp and am loving it and can't wait to try being more playful like this!
You can also play jazz chords by playing the right triad. For example to play a G11 that can be played by play a G chord or a D min the two together build a G11.
Oh my goodness. You make this look so simple. It’s beautiful to watch and you sound amazing. I love how you play. I’m looking forward to having a try at this but somehow I don’t think it will be anywhere near as easy as you make it look. Many thanks for the lesson. 🌸🌸
I love these classes. Ordered a Dusty String Ravanna 26 and it’s getting here this Friday. 33 years playing piano since age 4 I assume the harp is similar
I haven’t finished the video yet so you might say it already but for beginners you can cheat by tuning to a harmonic minor scale and that way, everything will sound good with everything.
What a great video Chiara, I learned a ton from it! I love improvising but sometimes I don't really know what I'm doing, this really helped me understand the most important things to keep in mind. Looking forward to checking out more of your videos :)
@@chiarapedrazzettiarpatelie6470 Middle Eastern sound ! Try setting the levers for Bb and C# and see how it sounds ! I sold my Pedal Harp two weeks ago and am waiting to restring my lever harp (haven't played it in 7 years )
The difficulty I have with improving on the harp (unlike my "real" instrument, the flute) is the necessity for placing and bridging fingering. For written pieces I usually have to work out all this finger choreography ahead of time. I don't understand how people do it on the fly - for example, Celtic players who change the ornamentation constantly throughout a piece. How do they do this without tripping up the fingering surrounding the changed ornamentation? I learn pieces by muscle memory, and if I veer away from the muscle map, the whole structure comes down.
Hi Samantha sorry just saw your message now. You're doing it right to work out the "finger choreography" (I love this expression, I'm gonna steal it) :-D With time you'll be able to free yourself a bit from that, especially for impro. Celtic music players are very used to put ornamentation (which is always the same 2-3 patterns) in specific parts of the pieces, so it becomes quite automatic eventually. Keep up the good work and, as Father Bach's Aria is saying....: "Geduld, geduld!"
Have you seen my other impro videos? th-cam.com/video/_7kv4GULdhE/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ChiaraPedrazzettiARPAtelier th-cam.com/video/FHeZ06HVjak/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ChiaraPedrazzettiARPAtelier If yes, tell me what would you like to know more!
Do you have any suggestions on how the right hand should align with the left hand? For example, when the left hand lands on a C chord, do you also want the right hand to be on a C chord note (CEG)?
Inversions help, so if you play a C chord with left, if you play any C inversion with the right hand you're good to go. My suggestion,,,just try, practice, try and practice again!
Vielen Dank...it helps me well💚🌷 whats the name of the Oriental tune? Greetings from Germany Chiara could you say to me, what is the Oriental Tunes name
It's just an improvisation with this "oriental scale" (e, f, g sharp, a, b, c, d sharp, e). Here is an example of a tune which I wrote with my husband: th-cam.com/video/fQvH_IHDa5Y/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=ChiaraPedrazzettiARPAtelier
What does it mean "scales" on the right hand please ? Do you avoid some notes on the right hand ? Also for the chords on the left hand, do you have the C chord as the first note for a C chord or do you reverse the chord ? Thank you !!
Scales mean note after note. Nope I don't avoid any note on the right hand. As for the chords in the left hands, yes, the C is the first note. You can also experiment with inversions later though.

Very helpful video. I have a reverie harp that I'm going to try your technique on.
I tried your method on my reverie harp and it did improve my improvisation. Thank you
Good lesson! Another simple trick is to play on a pentatonic scale. It's virtually impossible to play badly, as long as you keep the tempo-rhythm.
