  • In this video we'll cover how to make a reconstruction of the pillbox style hat based on a textile fragment found at the Hedeby (Haithabu) Harbour settlement, in Viking Age Denmark. This fragment is catalogued as piece S35 and is dated to the 9th century. We cover the debate around the fragment, how to measure your head, construction, and finishing touches.

    Apologies for the background static caused by the microphone. I'll do my best to remove this in the next video.

      Don't worry man it happens to the best of us, I have had it in all of my vids since I got a mic and I still don't know how to fix it. Keep up the good work man!!!

    Pro-Tip for figuring out your exact head shape/circumference. Use a piece of wire. Shape the wire to your head and that wil give you an exact shape to trace.

    Thanks for the video. It is the best that I have seen so far. One word of advice. TERMINOLOGY. A cap like the one that you are making has a bill in the front or none at all. A hat has a brim that goes all the way around the piece.

    Great video. I love the hat. Have been thinking about making one. Coming across your video is the green light, to get it done.
    I’m very fortunate, I live 20 minutes from Pendleton Woolen end store. You can purchase the mill ends. The hat may cost 3.00.
    FYI - I found on Pinterest a hat makers guide for the top of hats in oval shapes. It gives you the head circumference and the oval template that matches. It increases iaccordingly. No math !
    Best regards

      Just this variation for now, but once we complete a few other Hedeby items we might circle back.

    It probably originally wasn't Scandinavian fashion, but rather Frankish.

    What kind of fabric is that?

    • @vikinghistory
      @vikinghistory  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's thick wool. The original fragment was 2/2 twill wool, but what I used is a very thick plain weave gray wool.
