Mark Knopfler wrote this about the Falklands war between Argentina and the UK in 1982.

Mark turned 75 last week and dropped 9 new tracks, One Deep River (Deluxe), on YT. So he still writes them like that. This song is written from the perspective of a mortally wounded soldier and his final thoughts. One of the best anti-war songs ever. Also saw him at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville during the Sailing To Philadelphia tour. Between his music and the venue it was idyllic and also the first time he and Emmylou Harris collaborated to my knowledge. Unlike most older bands that rested on their laurels at some point Mark never has and we are blessed by it and I'm not a religious sort. Hope you enjoy his work as much as I have for decades now.

And deservedly so. It's such a powerful and emotional watch every time. Knopfler is a genius songwriter/guitarist/storyteller and this amazing and iconic video perfectly demonstrates that. 🙋‍♂

Saw Dire Straits Live twice in April and September 1992. I was still a kid and had discovered the band a couple years before with the Money For Nothing greatest hits record. I immediately fell in love with their music and with mark Knopfler’s singing and guitar playing.
They had officially broken up since 1988 and there was no chance they would make another album and tour. Against all odds, they announced they were getting back together in 1991. You can’t imagine how exited I was.
The shows were amazing. The crowds went completely mad! I’ve been to many a concerts since then, but never have I experience such a thing ever again.

This song makes me cry every time I hear it. It's like his guitar is pleading with him not to go, and to come home. In the end,... he doesn't, and the guitar just wails through the end of the song.

Inspired by the Falklands War of 1982 and still very relevant today, which was when the Argentinians invaded The Falkland Islands in the South Pacific and we (The UK) sent a task force to get them back.
    The video is still amazing.

Baptism of Fire is an expression meaning not really getting a break, being thrown in the fire with no chance to prepare or survive, learn enough to cope.
Maybe look at the Album versions of Telegraph Road, Private Investigation ...

    Nice video, nice reaction.
I know this is a video about music. Still you talk about America, patriotism, war, freedom and that you thank the soldiers for serving your country.
    Nothing wrong with your feelings.
I live in a country with almost 80 years of no war. This is because my country wants to live in peace with it´s neighbours.
The US _started_(!!) several wars during this time. Can one say these soldiers fought for peace? I´m aware it´s not the soldiers fault that the wars happend.
I live in a country where I have the freedom to walk almost anywhere, am free to enter almost any lake, wood, mountain. I don´t fear guns, don´t fear police, don´t fear to get imprisioned, can let my daughter walk alone at night, can cross borders to our neighbor countries while barly noticing the borders. Have visitied more than 15 countries in various continents, learned their good and bad. Our schools are free and don´t need police. Can have a beer while in public, have access to affordable natural healthy food, don´t have the fear to get fired because of nothing, don´t have the fear to go bankrupt because of medical bills or loss of job. have a higher life expectancy, leave my car unlocked and my house is amost never key locked. I even don´t need a fence around my house to my adjacent neigbors. Am not afraid of foreigners. Have the right to demonstrate.
This is my freedom. But no, my country is not perfect. But I appreciate these things that make every day life so relaxed and healthy - that is almost impossible for a short term visitor to experience.
If you don´t have yet: make your own experience by visiting other countries. Own experience is better than hearsay. You learn for life. And yes - maybe you learn to appreciate your country even more.

Hi Lijie miss seeing you, thanks for reacting to this song, you are so right about being blessed to live in this country, GOD bless the men and woman who serve in our military to protect our freedoms, another song by Dire Straits you should check out is ROMEO AND JULIETT, I think you,ll like it. I,m still waiting for you to disc o
ver RAY WILSON, I think you will like him also. As far as baptism by fire i,m not sure, but anyone who is willing to die for what they believe in especially freedom should be baptized, war is HELL. and anyone who has lived through it must have some terrible memories. GOD BLESS THEM.

A little tip that might help you to not get blocked by TH-cam: try breaking up the song in half with some extended commentary (say 2 to 3 min.). For very long pieces, make a comment every 5 minutes or so. People claim that this helps appease the copyright gods.

The instrumental and guitar solo from Mark Knopfler and pedal steel guitar solo from Paul Franklin is jaw dropping.Every reactor I've seen said it had a huge impact. Also from this concert, Private Investigations is so haunting too. And just lastly, the song Telegraph Road from Alchemy Live Dire Straits 1983 is so beautiful. They really are great Live.
