Though Pencak Silat is one of the oldest and most well known martial art in the archipelago, the Majapahit empire that spread across Southeast Asia marked an important step in spreading the warrior arts across the region. Majapahit form of martial arts was first introduced by Mahesa Anabrang, an Admiral of the Majapahit Kingdom at that time to expand the territorial of its kingdom through an expedition called ‘Pamalayu’ up to the neighboring countries like the Philippines and the Malayan Peninsula.
Mahesa Anabrang had bequeathed Majapahit martial arts discipline to his nephew Adityawarman, king of Malayapura (Majapahit). The martial arts then spread out from the kingdom of Malayapura to its neighboring islands surrounding the Malay Peninsula, Riau, Bugis, Wajo and Sulu at the Mindanao, Philippines.
The distribution of Majapahit martial arts in the Philippines stems from the migration of Malays into the southern, central and northern Philippines in the 14th century, Mark V.Wiley said as quoted from the historia.id page. Unfortunately, Majapahit martial arts disappeared with the collapse of the Majapahit kingdom. While in a foreign country, Majapahit martial arts is developing rapidly in people’s lives. In fact, it continues to the present. This rich cultural heritage is at the core of Kali Majapahit martial arts today.

From where I grew up, the middle part of the Philippines is called Visayas, and sundang is a type of machete/sword in our region. Kalis is one of the ancestral sword of the islands, and to practice swordfighting or fencing is pertained as kali-kali. My regards to Indonesia!

It is interesting! I'm 53, and have been banged up a bit due to work (corrections) but I do what I can every day. I have been studying, and researching various arts from China, Indonesia, and the Philippines, and they have shared much over the centuries. These instructors have distilled these various arts very nicely indeed. Just do what you can when you can. Your body will tell you what it doesn't like. But there is probably more you can do, than can't. Best of luck to you!

This is a branch of silat martial art that offensive by nature, not popular and can be said extinct in indonesia because this is war silat branch that was focused it's efficiency to neck/head area target. I do say it was wrong to call it martial art which associated with self defense, it was killing art by nature if trained properly.

No sir, but our students can choose to compete in stick-fighting, May Thai or MMA tournaments if they choose so

@@Subscriber-xc7cs ; It is inspired by martial arts from the Majapahit Empire (Silat, Kali, Muay Thai and Kuntao), but our system is a modern synthesis.

Most of this is FMA probably from the Modern Arnis system.

Actually none of it is. I have never done Modern Arnis in my life. Most of my teachers came from the Inayan system of Eskima or the Inosanto lineage.

Yes, there are some similarities... But it would be more accurate to say krav maga (which is 40 years old) is similar to Kali (which is hundreds of years old ;-)

Kali majapahit came from majapahit kingdom, so this is pencak silat.

Kali Majapahit is a mix of Majapahit Sundang Pencak Silat, Filipino Kali and May Thai. There was no fighting art called "Kali Majapahit" in Java during the Majapahit Empire
