Knotting solution? Caulk before primer, surely that would cause in to shrink more? I'm a plumber but I don't see this as a go to method 😕

You're using a finishing coat instead of a primer? I'd prefer to use a primer which will achieve the same finish but ensure a better bond between the paint and timber.
