  • The Aberdare mountains are an isolated volcanic range that forms the easternmost wall of the Great Rift Valley, to the east of the high Kinangop/Laikipia plateau. They are around 100 km long from north to south. Ol Donyo Lesatima (4001 m) is the third highest summit of Kenya. The Aberdares offer a truly outstanding landscape. At higher altitude the area is covered with head-high bushes, followed by marsh plains and finally rocky slopes, where each biome has its distinct flora. Staggering rock formations such as the famous Dragon's teeth are characteristic for the Aberdare mountains.

    The evening before the hike we met with a representative of Alpine Adventures Safaris to prepare for the tour. An extensive briefing gave as all the important information for the hike.
    Next morning were picked up at 6:30 at the Aberdare Country Club by our excellent guide Richard and our driver. From there we drove the Aberdare National Park Rhino Gate at 2560m where we teamed up with our ranger for the hike. Together we drove by car to our starting point at 3452m. After havingh our packed breakfast we were ready for an exciting adventure. Exactly at 09:00 we started our hike and followed the path uphill throuh head-high bushes and soon after we had a maginificent outlook over the surrounding landscape with amazing rock formation. After passing the bushes we entered the marsh plain. The plain is covered in long, bushy grass and the path was muddy and wet. We walked carefully and slowly, also because of the thin air at this high altitude. Shortly after the midpoint of the hike we passed throuth the middle of a stunning rock formation. The point-like peaks of the cliffs surrounding us looked absolutely surreal. We reached the exit at 12:00 where we made our lunch break. From there we could already see the next highlight in front of us: the famous Dragon's teeth rocks. After lunch we hiked along this staggering rock formation where the rocks look like a row full of sharp pointy teeths. From there on we climbed higher and higher above the amazing landscape and towards the summit of the Aberdare mountain range: Ol Donyo Lesatima. The air got thinner and we started to suffer from altitude sickness started but we continued and finally reached the top of Mount Satima at 14:00. With our heads literelly in the clouds we reached the summit but soon after the sky opened up and we had a magnificent outlook over the Aberdare mountain range and the valley down below. We enjoyed the peak and made a short break but then we had to start our descent and folllowed the same way back down until we finally reached our car at 17:30. 14 Hours after we started this exciting day we came back to our hotel and said goodbye to our excellent guide Richard and our diver.
    We would like to thank our excellent tour operator Kenya Experience for organizing and conducting our amazing safari in Kenya, including Samburu, Buffalo Springs, Lewa, Ol Pejeta, Aberdare, Lake Naiwasha and Hells Gate:

      @@SandraMarkusTrachsel Das freut mich sehr. Auf diese Art kann man Afrkia hautnah und authentisch erleben. Natur pur, abseits der großen Touristenströme. Hoffentlich bleibt dies noch lange so erhalten.

    *Did you see any animals that lived around there? What was the average temperature?*

    • @SandraMarkusTrachsel
      @SandraMarkusTrachsel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you very much for your kind comment, appreciate it very much! We saw animals lower down in the forest when driving up to the starting point, but that was not the focus of this hike. Also we visited Solio Ranch with the Rhino Sancutary the day before the hike, see video here: th-cam.com/video/6CTQo0oFCtE/w-d-xo.html
      Once we were on the way up to the summit, there were no more animals in sight and we also did not bring any big camera up there either. It was purely a hiking trip. Regarding the temperature, it was not warm and it got cooler and windier the higher we got. Also we had some light rain showers on the way back down. So as you can see in the video, we wrapped ourselves in wind- and water resistant coats and wear caps as well. Wishing you all the best and best regards, Markus

    Dear Sandra & Markus, may I ask you for your Kenya trip itinerary? How many days did you spend on each locality? Also, it seems it has been quite cold up there... I must say that this video opened my eyes, as I considered Aberdares to be a forest safari location.

    • @SandraMarkusTrachsel
      @SandraMarkusTrachsel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dear Marek, thank you very much for your kind comment. We spent 4 nights in Samburu/Buffalo Springs, 3 nights in Lewa, 3 nights in Ol Pejeta (we are working on that video at the moment), 2 nights in Aberdare Country Club (we visited Solio Ranch on the arrival day and then one full day for the hike) and finally 2 nights in Lake Naiwasha/Hells Gate. We flew from Nairobi to Samburu and then went all the way back to Nairobi with our driver guide. It was not really cold but very windy (you can sometimes see it when you look at the grass and bushes in the video, so there was a high wind-chill-factor!). And also on the summit you can see how fast the clouds are passing by. Best regards, Markus

    Wozu der bewaffnete Führer? Kann man da auch solo wandern?

    • @SandraMarkusTrachsel
      @SandraMarkusTrachsel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Vielen Dank für Deinen Kommentar. Wanderungen müssen im Park-Büro angemeldet und von einem Ranger begleitet werden. Es könnten durchaus Elefanten oder Büffel umher ziehen. Aber ja, so entspannt wie unser Ranger war kommt das wohl sehr selten vor. Wir hatten auf unserer Wanderung keine Tiersichtungen. Viele Grüsse, Markus
