Limiting the use of palm oil is already a counter initiative. Global demand will continue to increase, and you're scrutinizing the source of oils & fats that is most productive. You need 10x more land to produce the same amount of oil that palm produced. All those biodiversity loss arguments are flawed and very bias. Country's that plant all these commodities have more forest covers than any EU countries.
Europe have make good living of their forests and other people's forest. These new laws are seen as Europe wanted to make sure they continue to live to enjoy those money while asking developing countries to remain poor but keep supplying oxygen to them.
Time to pay for your net carbon emissions.

What we need is for the US, EU, Russia/Belarus/Ukraine, Argentina/Uruguay, Australia, and SADC countries in Southern Africa to produce more butter and dairy cream to produce heavy fats for foods that currently use palm oil. Then for biofuels we should just get rid of palm oil and use petroleum from Iraq, Iran, Russia, and Venezuela instead. That would cause less damage to the rainforests.

However the so called 'Bio polyethylene' which is made from plants grown on these fields are not only not banned by EU but encouraged by EU for producers to be used. The real profit for these farmers are these polymers, which are bio for sure but not green. Strange EU does not ban "bio polymers"...
