  • Apple's MacBook Air is now equipped to go head to head against the MacBook Pro because both laptops now have the same M3 chip, however, even with the addition of the M3 chip is the MacBook Air really worth it or should you just upgrade to the M3 MacBook Pro?

      Absolutely correct. They already lost a buyer, me. I'm a casual user, mainly use MS Office, and stream content. I just wanted an Apple brand laptop especially for the battery life, but I'm not spending money unnecessarily. Intel is good enough for me for now.
      But Apple is losing many customers just because of their strategy.

    The MacBook Pro’s problem is that they called it the MacBook Pro. If it were just called the MacBook and the Pro moniker were just applied to the versions with the Pro chip, I think it would have clarified the laptop line-up.

      Apple laptops are definitely priced at a premium… that being said, if you spec out similar style laptops (I.e. aluminum) with similar display and battery lifes … the price difference between Apple and Windowns isn’t as big as people make it out to be. Windows laptops do typically have more ports out the gate and more software selection. It’s just a matter of what the consumer values more. But also Apple, please stop it with the 8tb ram laptops … specially in the pro line up.

    I ordered a refurbished Pro 14 with the M3 Pro chip, 16 GG and 512GB memory yesterday. Between it being ‘refurbished” (but it is the November 2023 model) and my veterans discount, it came out to $1529 instead of $1999. I pick it up on Thursday at the store. I don’t NEED that much power but when I went through everything spec by spec, I just wanted something better than Air for not that much more. The extra 3/4 of a pound weight was my most serious concern. But it’s still portable enough. This basically reinforced my decision. Refurbished is not bad. The Air with the M3 chip is too new to be on the refurbished market, but give it four months and it will be. Meanwhile…I just read that Apple is working on an M4 chip to be released around early 2025. It’s always something1

    • @firefly8464
      @firefly8464 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Refurbished is the way to go. And it might not actually mean that something has to be fixed on a refurbished laptop. I ordered a 16” M1 MacBook Pro when they came out, but had second thoughts when I received it, as I felt it was too expensive to be hauling around SE Asia for a year. So I returned it to the store, completely unopened, to swap for a base M1 MacBook Air. I asked if they would put it straight back into stock… and they told me no, it wouldn’t, all returned Apple products go through the refurbished scheme, whether they are damaged or unopened returns. So my brand new, untouched, unopened MacBook Pro ended up as a cracking deal for someone with about a 20% discount.

      @GrantGordonComedy 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bluetech2809 I see your point, but regardless of their strategy, to even look at a pro with 16gb is 1799. So someone with more of a 1400-1600 max budget is stuck with this Sophie's Choice of a high end budget model or low end pro model with ram as the main trade off. Personally, I went with the m3 air with 16gb, as I think it makes it a more well rounded machine for the long haul and feel I can live without those pro upgrades, which strike me as more luxury/quality of life vs boots on the ground. But still, would love Greg's take!

The screen was plenty bright enough to use in all but direct sunlight. Performance is great with LR and Photoshop. I spent over an hour at BestBuy comparing it side by side with the 14" MBP and ultimately decided that the 14" MBP is not fast enough to be my primary machine and it's enough heavier than the MBA to make it not the best choice for my use case. I'm still compelled by the 15" Air over the 14" pro even though the price is similar if spec is the same. That extra inch can be important when working "on the go". It's slightly more portable too (I guess??). Considering I work docked 80% of the time... i'm not too concerned about having the fancy screen (though it is nice). The pixel count is ridiculous on both so it's more the local dimming and refresh rate I might miss. Those are luxury's though while screen real estate is practical. But yeah... it's a hard choice for sure. Ideally for me they'd make a 15" Air "pro" (+high refresh and local dimming essentially). 14" just doesn't cut it and the 16" is a mammoth.

    • @innosanto

      Depends the type of work on the go, 15 inches is bigger than what i would consider ideal for on the go but for each person is different, howvwr on the go if heavier workloads air could be slower after some time. If specs are same then it would mean performance is important.

      I think yes it can hamdle but if you also have many wxcel tabs and bug excel sheets better the 16gb ram.
      And if you also want a heavy antivirus and firewall plus maybe a another piece of software in parallel such as powerbi or tableau ir maybe a game also, then it would start foing to pro
      -> Theee is one more reason to choose 16g for air, or a pro all together which is future proofing. Things will get heavier on ram usage and gpu in next 2 years. And compared to base model 13inch air the pro has two extra gpu cores as well.
      Bear in mind zoom calls and the active filtering during a call if in parallel to the stuff you mentioned and teams or other chat app and whatever comes in future such as a type of ai co-pilot style software will all be using ram and gpus. So the extra 100-200 of an air 16gb with 512gb or a pro will be furure proofed foe next 3,4 years hopefully 5 years with emergence of new apps. This is a big fixed investement that apple does not allow to alter in future by adding ram or storage through a “not-agile” and “not-modern” approach to be honest.
      Modernity is supposed to be agile but anyway.
      On the other hand they give updates to laptops for lonf time.

      Another tip, if you or a friend is traveling to USA you can buy it there its cheaper.

I wanted the bigger display, even if its only a inch, I never use the speakers on any device as I always have headphones in, and a good usb c to hdmi cable is only around £20 online, and its perfect. I do occasional light video and photo work but even for that its plenty faster than the i7 quad core mbp I was on before, and the limitation of 8 gigs ram doesn't seem to have affected anything for me compared to my 16 gigs mbp

    I feel both machines are real good. For me personally though, I'm going with an air, even though I want the pro. For me it simply came down to being in a different market (euros) and also buying this as a secondary machine to be used besides my Studio. The biggest pain point, the base air is 730 euros (roughly 800 dollars) less compared to the base pro and that price gap is a bit too insane. Even when speccing it out to match (upgrade the storage on the air) the difference still is 500 euros (roughly 550 dollars). That price difference for me is still too large, especially when just using it as a secondary machine. So yeah, would have really liked the better display, speakers and longer battery life, but a base model has always worked for my use cases and the price gap is too insane to justify the pro model. I'm sure there are people who can justify it, but when you simply use the machine with some light work, or as a secondary system like I do, I fail to see how one could justify the pro model over the air.

After that sprint, the Air has time to cool down again in by far most cases, run that 100m again, meaning for all intense and purposes, they are identical in performance. Most buyers won’t be exporting massive videos and rendering large 3D scenes over 5 minutes, if they were all the time I suppose they would automatically go for active cooling and know they need it. Thank you again for a very relevant review to me. I’m trying to choose now and it’s close, so close, I’m leaning towards the Pro at the moment but….

    thermal throttling is a very serious issue... I think it's an important thing to mention considering a Macbook Air is a premium product, and anyone looking at reviews probably want to do more than browse the web. For the users who would not care about the thermal throttling, there are laptops and tablets available for half the price. On top of performance issues, surely operating at relative higher temps has other drawbacks such as longevity of components, battery usage etc.
    I was on a 2019 i9 MCP. The thermal throttling made it infuriating to operate, and on paper this thing should be a very capable machine, but in use it's like using an archaic machine. I've finally upgraded to a current MCP M3 Pro and the price is ridiculous for what it is.

    • @halfalligator6518

      yeah. i get the feeling they reverse engineer their prices downward, rather than up. The upgraded machines gather money from professionals and enthusiasts which helps fund the R&D, then they kind of artificially lower the price until they end up with a cheaper mass-market model (of which i'm 100% sure the margins are much tighter).
      It does make for stressful purchases that's for sure. At the same time... you do get more bang for buck now than with the older intel Macbooks. Pricey? yup... but at least now they have some pretty strong hardware features that make them at least somewhat unique. I'm not defending any shitty business practices... just a perspective. The thing is... professionals don't mind $300 here or there, when it's a laptop that could help them make $500,000 over the next few years. A laptop they're on for half their life (if not more). The RAM is a ripoff... but it's still good RAM and overall big picture... these machines last and they perform with very few failures. Imagine if we applied this kind of consumer scrutiny to the automobile market? Soooo many "nice to haves" being sold at insane prices.
