I interned for John Waters once and was paid nothing whilst working and going to college full time. Intern life is terrible. I expected MK and ash to act better than this, but also, they seem on the mental decline…..sigh. It’s all bad.

Because if that’s the case my friend may have a case too.
@Crystal Danae Youre' wrong; according to harvard business review over 60% of internships are paid while the rest are unpaid so what is the majority? PAID. Are you unable to google your facts?
@@missmack3184 Ooooh, you're such the expert. you're probably in an unpaid internship as we speak, hence the extreme bitterness towards any comment i make. Classic example of how the rich get richer. 🙄 By not properly paying their employees or not at all. IMO it seems as if these big household names pay with the “experience” like, “you worked for ME and that should be enough” idk tho lol @SLOAN you should do a video on Mary-Kate Olsen and Heath Ledger’s friendship/relationship, and how she was one of the last ones to talk to him before he died, not saying she had anything to do with it, it’s just intriguing to me. The channel Deep Dive did a great video on them!
What is there to talk about? Mary-Kate never spoke about it up until this day. It's been almost 15 years and no one knows what really happened that night. The only thing that was reported was that a woman who was Heath's masseuse called Mary-Kate when she found Heath deceased because she was the first contact in his phone and Mary-Kate contacted her security team to go over there and see what was going on. That was it. Case closed.
I’m kind of confused… if you sign up for an unpaid internship and learn the industry while being in that position.. why be upset when you don’t get paid? It’s what you signed up for? But the lack of breaks and things like that are terrible. “It’s like a job but you don’t get paid” I think is a pretty accurate description of an internship.
i remember the olsen twin VHS 's I was born in 97' i saw these because of my cousins who were a few years older than I. I remember that logo! that was nostalgic.
Here’s my thing , I LOVED Mary Kate & Ashley ans I felt for them bc they had a traumatic trauma induced childhood & teen years. That’s why they are so close , not just twins but share the same exact experiences. I felt for them but their trauma doesn’t mean they can take advantage of people who work for them! You’d think they’d be a little more understanding and compassionate
Sadly this is so much of working in fashion is, I’ve had to work unpaid internships before where I worked 13 hour days and was only allowed a one hour break to eat once during 13 hours
I have been in the fashion industry for 20+ years longer if you include retail. Most people have the perception that it must be so much fun and so very glamorous. The reality is you work your ass off, sometimes you are paid well but most of the time it is just OK, a lot of people can be rather abusive, and it is cut throat. If you don’t have a thick skin it’s probably not the industry for you. And if you are going to cry it’s best to do it in the bathroom or outside.
Interns working intern hours doing intern tasks. No pay and unpaid overtime? How can you sue after accepting an unpaid internship. Most people that went to college have had unpaid internships…
Sad. I would have thought that after everything they've been through they would be better people or at least treat people how they deserve to be treated.
Of course they weren't going to get much money. They were interns. Unless it states "paid intern" you're not getting paid. I'm not saying they weren't over worked or they were treated right. But that's all hearsay. Pretty hard to prove in court. Even if 185 interns came forward. One woman started and I'm sure her lawyer was like let's try to find as many as we can to jump on the bandwagon so we look better. Whether they were all wronged or not is neither here or there. 140k is nothing compared to the costs of a trial. They made it clear they deny everything but settled out of court to avoid the mess that comes with a jury trial. Smart business moves. Doesn't mean it's morally right.
I feel like it’s so common to have unpaid fashion internships - as well as numerous other types! Not that I think it’s ok at all, but I believe people know what they’re signing up for with them?
yeah but comments like yours continue to normalize it instead of challenging it.... accepting unpaid internships in fashion as "that's the way it is -- deal with it" does nothing to change things. It perpetuates the nonpaid internship model. Nice insight there.
Solan always brings the real tea tea. This is all the stuff you don’t see in the popular media. Makes you think if they pay for the stories not be reported on. 🧐 I find myself googling this stuff and always find little articles…..sketchy
They used to have movies and books when I was younger. I enjoyed a few of the movies in the heyday of their child celebrity. It's terribly disappointing to hear how they are to their employees.
You know that they didn't have to accept the job if it came with all that they should have just quit immediately if it's too much for them to handle but of course they accept it cuz it was the Olsen twins knowing interns don't always make a whole lot of money it's the experience that they get from it
Yet, all these people and celebrities still promote the Row. Ya’ll we really must stop buying from these designers and celebrities. Let’s change things with how we shop! We have more power than we think
Interns can't work legally without ever having breaks, and normal full time hour weeks that'd be 40+ hours and that's only okay if it's a paid internship at least in my state they legally can't have people working 40+ hour weeks with no pay.
Unless you sign up for a paid internship, don't expect to get paid. The experience you get is your payment. It's almost unheard of to get a paid internship at any fashion label. This is nothing new. I thought that literally everyone on Earth knew this. It sounds like these people didn't ask the right questions when they decided to apply for the internships, and now they want to blame the company for doing what is considered the norm. Lesson learned.
It’s the school’s responsibility to make sure internships involve training. I trained under docs when I attended Vanderbilt University to become a nurse practitioner. I then took on interns over 16 years to train them and help my own recertification. When I was a professor there also we made surprise visits to intern sites to see what they were learning. After the first intern reported this the university should never place students there again. If my interns were good I helped find them a job using my network of healthcare professionals and drug reps who always know of openings before they are listed. They knew being a good intern with me would lead to a great job either for me or with a colleague.
I have no sympathy or patience for people who have hundreds of millions of dollars who can’t pay their employees a decent wage, or fail to pay them period.
My thing is, why do these people stay? And why do even more people work for these types of celebrities?!! Is it because of how it makes them look working for a high profile celebrity? I just don’t get it…
@@Bloom2Grow well if you're already going to be forced to work for free, you might as well do it for celebrities. it's maybe a chance to get more exposure to the celebrity themselves, or to brag about it on future job applications. Saying you interned for the prestigious brand The Row stands out way more than if you were a Zara intern for example
Why would you not treat your interns with dignity and pay them? Would the twins work for free? No way! I have never seen these two women look happy, and I don’t think the are….
Most internships are unpaid, sadly. Although, mega corporations should be compensating their interns. Unpaid interns shouldn't work as hard, and as much as paid employees. Internships are about learning, experiencing, and gaining professional connections. It shouldn't be a tool to attain free labor.
This is purely anecdotal, and I have to trust my childhood friend at her word. The story: me and my friend grew up in Southern California. My friend once had a job taking care of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s horses and their stalls back in the 90’s. We’re all about the same age, so this is when we all (including Mary Kate and Ashley) were kids! She was suuuuuper excited to meet them and tell them how much she loved their films. However, when they actually met, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen snubbed their pretty little noses at my friend and we’re very short and dismissive. My friend was so heartbroken about it.
Your training in Intershops is using the knowledge used in the classroom in a hands on way. You gain first hand knowledge and experience that may be different or backup what you’ve learned in the classroom. No internship pays you, that was unheard of especially in 2015. It hasn’t been since 2020 that some paid internships have spread throughout all industries, but they are very rare.
Hey! Just trying to be a little constructive. Sometimes the titles of your videos seem a bit over-dramatic, with words like exposed when it's more like someone giving an opinion or unsupported account, and in this case, writing their "own" employees is redundant since their employees are their own by definition. It sounds nit-picky, but in my recommended, the cut-off was after "own" which implied to me that it would be someone notably close to them, like a parent or friend, etc. I really enjoy your videos and it's not a big issue or anything, but it's something I think about. Your videos are interesting enough without using inflating words, in particular because you're always thorough in your disclaimers on what is and isn't supported.

I honestly expected hearing about Michael Jackson being alive than hearing about the Olsen Twins getting sued
Interns where I'm from don't get paid and we all know it before being an intern... I don't feel sorry for them.
@alien most “internships” that aren’t in hospitals are clerical duties, lightly related tasks (cutting fabric), data processing. That would be accepted as on the job training
@alien actually you are learning interpersonal skills, administrative skills, networking opportunities, day to day flow of the field you want to work in. Plenty of things that my friends that were not in college did not learn or know about.
Your work ethic 🔥🔥🔥🔥👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I find it weird that they say dualstar was founded by 2 six year olds. Like, no it wasn't, six year olds aren't starting a big business of directing and producing films. I'm sure they probably own it now, but no damn way did they start that business 🤦♀️. Makes me wonder if they put their names on it to avoid dealing with any problems if something happened down the road.
@Crystal Danae I meant more along the lines of actually running it. Stuff like that comes with a lot of responsibility you can't put on young children. It's not like they were little bosses walking around preparing meetings and sending faxes though that is a cute image lol
@@AshChiCupcak no, but they were working since they were 9 months old. they are not heiresses - the company was founded in their name to produce and manage the work that they were already doing for 5 years.
@@5naf6 Regardless of how "legal" any of that is, it leaves a really gross feeling that a bunch of adults milked these kids for every penny they could. Child labor laws really needs an update cuz I don't think things like this should be allowed. It just feels wrong to make decisions for a child they may not want in the future, like a damn entertainment company. Maybe cuz I have kids, I'm taking this a bit personally. I could never see my kids being able to handle the workload they had to. And I'm definitely not defending their actions now. I'm just not surprised a company like this is having issues now.
their dad started it and gave full ownership to them when they turned 18. they worked for and under dualstar as kids but got to reap the benefits as adults
@@AshChiCupcak it was actually created by their entertainment attorney to help prevent them from being exploited by the industry since they were the most popular kids in the world at that time. Their parents weren’t stage parents. It helped protect their assets. They didn’t push for stardom, it just happened.
I feel like this time period had such a toxic outlook on interning. Almost like it was trendy to be miserable, slaving away for no money just bc you're working for a big name. I'm glad people are speaking out about their experience. Companies took advantage of so many driven people
Keep up with the amazing content! Much love from Portland Maine ❤️ 💙
I interned for John Waters once and was paid nothing whilst working and going to college full time.
Intern life is terrible. I expected MK and ash to act better than this, but also, they seem on the mental decline…..sigh. It’s all bad.
Shoutout to sloan for all of the epic content
I know someone very close to me who was doing an internship for a social media influencer brand in LA, they kept promising that they would hire her after 3 months but they ended up extending those months to 6-7 months. My friend would always be in tears and stressed out over this company.
I just have a question because my friend told me that interships aren’t suppose to pay you? Can someone clarify this? Because if that’s the case my friend may have a case too.
@Crystal Danae Youre' wrong; according to harvard business review over 60% of internships are paid while the rest are unpaid so what is the majority? PAID. Are you unable to google your facts?
Welcome to the world. Get it in writing or get over it sadly
@@ellena.8369 that wasn’t always the case. There’s a recent shift. They used to be mostly unpaid. I was in college in 2014 and all options were unpaid
@@missmack3184 I don't give a crap, just stating facts from google. and trying not to provide slave labor. Get over it Return of the Mack
@@missmack3184 Ooooh, you're such the expert. you're probably in an unpaid internship as we speak, hence the extreme bitterness towards any comment i make. Sure you graduated in 2014 but maybe you are in ANOTHER unpaid internship, it happens. I've replied to all three or four of them. I have nothing kind to say because you've gone out of your way to be a sasshole
I love how you uploading videos so frequently ❤️
Classic example of how the rich get richer. 🙄 By not properly paying their employees or not at all. IMO it seems as if these big household names pay with the “experience” like, “you worked for ME and that should be enough” idk tho lol
@SLOAN you should do a video on Mary-Kate Olsen and Heath Ledger’s friendship/relationship, and how she was one of the last ones to talk to him before he died, not saying she had anything to do with it, it’s just intriguing to me.
Sloan did do a video about them. It was quite awhile ago but maybe look in his playlists. It might be in there.
@@jennifercooper3846 oh I didn’t know that! Thank you :)
Lord that logo brings me back lmao
Always thought they were creepy not surprised 🙄
- sees the dual star commercial again- core memories unlocked omg
Here’s my thing , I LOVED Mary Kate & Ashley ans I felt for them bc they had a traumatic trauma induced childhood & teen years. That’s why they are so close , not just twins but share the same exact experiences. I felt for them but their trauma doesn’t mean they can take advantage of people who work for them! You’d think they’d be a little more understanding and compassionate
True
What, why? Arent they billionaires???

Sadly this is so much of working in fashion is, I’ve had to work unpaid internships before where I worked 13 hour days and was only allowed a one hour break to eat once during 13 hours
I wish the interns could've gotten more. What a stressful and chaotic experience! Sheesh. This gives me DASH vibes! Celebs need to do better.
So many videos lately, thank you for working so hard :)🖤
Sounds like my first designer job 😭😭😭 Never work for a place with the word “star” in it.
Doesn't mean it's morally right.
could we get an update on what's happening with britney's court case? I heard the judge is not backing down on Jamie's deposition.
I gotta say $140k is not that much. Goes to show this class action lawsuit wasn't out of greed but just justice.
My son is an asm in Lowe’s. They never give him his vacations He works on his days off too. It’s disgusting
But he gets paid?
This shocks me because Mary-Kate and Ashly Olsen worked more than most kids were so why become another two horrible bosses?
That is just rediclous they have a net worth of £550 million and they cant even pay thier employees a decent wage. Greed!
@@ellena.8369 yeah and someone else who wants the experience will always be there to work unpaid soooo
You know that they didn't have to accept the job if it came with all that they should have just quit immediately if it's too much for them to handle but of course they accept it cuz it was the Olsen twins knowing interns don't always make a whole lot of money it's the experience that they get from it
Dude you are working overtime on these videos ! Don’t forget to take a break when you can !
Yet, all these people and celebrities still promote the Row. Ya’ll we really must stop buying from these designers and celebrities. Let’s change things with how we shop! We have more power than we think
I used to think the twins are creepy but I still felt bad for them, but now I don't feel bad for them.
They’re a couple of degenerates. I know they were likely se>
Great intro bro
Aren't internships normally unpaid?
Interns can't work legally without ever having breaks, and normal full time hour weeks that'd be 40+ hours and that's only okay if it's a paid internship at least in my state they legally can't have people working 40+ hour weeks with no pay.
You should do the Olivia and Jason nanny “exposing” them on how she got fired
I love how you open gifts at the end ❤️
I'm from Colombia and we have to work at least 50 hours a week for a minimum salary :/
They should have been paid their wage. in addition to compensation, for the length of time, stress and resources to get to this resolution.
I was literally about to pull out my calculator to see how much of them got but you said it before I opened it - Thank you for doing the math for me!
You have my attention.
I just don’t get it…
Some schools require you to do an internship as a prerequisite for graduation, otherwise you won't graduate
@@matchapeachcat but why for these celebrities?! Especially if they have a track record for stuff like this.
@@Bloom2Grow well if you're already going to be forced to work for free, you might as well do it for celebrities. it's maybe a chance to get more exposure to the celebrity themselves, or to brag about it on future job applications. Also employers: treats staff like shit
The Olsen twins stare just creep me out. They look soulless
Sloan I love you!!! Please do more on Mary-Kate and Ashley! I love them!! 😘😘
Interns should get paid for time and energy they spend at any company even if it’s min wage
Just reminds us that people like the twins can't become THAT rich without stealing from the backs of others. With no shame
I mean they had peopls stealing from their own backs since they were babies. they were exploited by the industry.
@@5naf6 so since they know how it feels why would they repeat it?
Maybe they could pay their employees instead of smoking 17 packs of cigarettes a day 😒… Elizabeth Olsen is the only queen
So they're not friendly. I'm not surprised. It's the characters on tv that we are used to
Wow they didn't age that well looking like they are 50 but about to hit 40 👀🍿
Those hefas are privileged and feel untouchable, one has drug and alcohol problem.....if not 😭 both
This is so gross! They have millions! Why not just be a decent human (s)?
They're vulger!
