The first time I saw a Preservation Hall Dixie band was 1970 or 71, Kid Valentine Thomas. That hit the high water mark for me in terms of blowing the roof off a joint and since then I have heard more than my share of the best jazz, blues, swing, and rock'n'roll talent around and I have never heard anyone blow the roof off and then bring it on home like New Orleans Dixie can. Migod what rivers of flavors collect in that piquant, beckoning, soothing, soul-engaging gumbo! And like Jelly Roll said 'way back, ya gotta have that Latin thing in there and, in that respect, NOTHING could be better than Preservation Hall doing El Manisero. In Havana, no less. Too much, simply too, too much. I hope the younger generations catch on to all that that particular song, by those musicians, done in that place represents in terms of people carrying the living, pulsing guts of music forward.
Omigod! Preservation Hall does El Manicero in Havana and knocks it out of the ball park! Man oh man, talk about bringing it on home! This performance deserves some kind of special acclaim,, something like the special acclaim given the legendary live performance of Stardust by Lionel Hamptom. Slam Stewart et al. Wow, something else to see!
Unfortunately I don't know that they will ever release the whole Havana Jazz Festival set but they did record it. You can catch pieces on their film "A Tuba to Cuba"
@@njdave2007 I can't thank you enough for posting this video, Man. El Manicero is printed on my bone marrow and soul because my Dixie band leader father used to leave it on the old-style record player sometimes when my parents passed out after a party and I remember listening to it over and over and over again in my crib. as the record player lifted up its arm at the of the end of the track then lifted up and went back to the beginning to play it again, over and over for god knows how long, continuing to print it on me as I slept. It's one of the earliest memories I have, the long, long enrapturement in the 2-3 clave rhythm and melody. Between that, and similar hard-wiring around exposure to Dixieland and swing from infancy on, I became, not surprisingly, a Latin, ballroom and swing dancer and Afro-Latin percussionist, and my brother became a jazz and rock drummer. I danced mambo for years, before salsa became popular here in Vancouver, and to this day, dancing or playing 2-3 clave compositions has a joy for me that reverberates that primal imprinting of El Manicero I got in 1952 or so. To see the venerable present-day torch bearers of Preservation Hall bring it on home like this (in Havana, no less! TOO FREAKING PERFECT!) is for me personally, literally one of THE very greatest musical performances I have ever seen or heard. I don't know what I would have done if I had been in the audience; melt, perhaps, with the idea I could die happy then and there. I think a lot of the jazz musicians I knew as a kid -- some of which played with Hampton, Lunceford, Ella and Dinah and all passed on now, of course, I am 69 -- would see this performance in much the same way I do, and would agree it deserves the kind of special acclaim I say it deserves. It's a landmark performance, I'd say, and I would further say that the older and more deeply connected a person is to Latin and Dixie, the more it grips one's guts as a landmark performance that encodes history and get-down musical culture. Thank you so much for posting it! And thanks for the tip for "A Tuba to Cuba" -- I'll check it out. Let me ask, if I may, Dave: are you one of the performers? What's your connection?
@@vancouverterry9142 My only connection is as a fan. In 2015 when PHJB was the headline act at the Havana Jazz Festival they put together a Havana tour package for people to go on. They did 2 shows that week in Havana and a couple other events.
@@vancouverterry9142 A Tuba to Cuba was a doc they put together about their experience going to Cuba the first time. The fans who went weren't involved in it directly but there's some live footage. I wish they'd put out the whole concert.
