  • Watch me test out some reusable coffee pods I found on Amazon. Sometimes Eco swaps don't nessarily work. This is purely my opinion.

Rosie, well done for experimenting, Tip;- Buy those coffee filter papers and cut them to the disc shape/size of the capsule, and try putting one on top of the tampered coffee first, 2, Do the same, but put one paper disc in the capsule before filling the pods with coffee, 3, put two discs in (top & bottom) = three experiments for you to try!.........lets us know how you got on.

I also tried something very similar to your well-intentioned suggestion, but I found that coffee paper filters do not slow down the brewing process anywhere near as well as the special non-absorbent tiny spiral tunnel structures I found built into the bottom of every real Dolce Gusto capsule. In fact, that structure below the coffee grounds tended to remind me of a miniature version of the "roundabouts" being built at heavily trafficked intersections which slow vehicles down by sending them slowly around in a circle while sorting things out. In addition, preceding the tunnel structure below the coffee grounds, I found that there is a clear plastic seal below the foil but on top of the grounds, which is what the machine's needle presumably also punches a tiny hole in, which s-l-o-w-s the entering hot water way down to a dribble as it enters into the ground coffee's chamber.
I am not aware of any of these so-called reusable pods which include all of that specially designed cocoon enclosing the coffee grounds both from above and below. One might conclude, as I have, that the elaborate structure inside a genuine pre-filled DG capsule is an integral part of the functional design of the Dolce Gusto machine producing expresso, without which it becomes nothing more than a Keurig-like machine. And a somewhat leaky one at that.
I have no connection with Nestle's or the Dolce Gusto division, except as a now happy user who previously bought and tried but ultimately discarded almost all these add-on gimmicks, all of which ended up subtracting from my enjoyment of my morning Dolce Gusto expresso.

Hey Rosie. Great video. I have the same kind of reusable capsule. You need to really tamp the coffee down. I personally use espresso ground coffee (eg lavazza, it comes in a foil package) and fill the capsules about half to ⅔ full. You have to make sure the coffee grounds arent in the way of the seal and really press the tops down.
I use mine to make a latte. Fill a cup about ⅓ to ½ way with milk of your choice, and microwave for about 60 seconds. Froth the milk if youre in to that, and then fill the rest of the cup with coffee. It works well.
As for sustainability of the throw away pods, Aldi and Dolce Gusto support the Podback scheme where you can order a free bag and once the bag is full, you send it back to their freepost address. It's a step in the right direction.
If you have any other coffee tips, or try the metal capsules, i would love to know your opinion.

Maybe you need put the paper filer bottom of the pod and need more temping the coffee. Because you showed the coffee and I can see particles of coffee and less crema. Thanks for sharing your testing. I will buy the plastic pods for my Dolce Gusto.
I will expect your next video!

Any updates so far? very curious how your experiments went.
I got an amazon basic coffee grinder, and some whole beans.
Grinded it to a fine blend, and now I'm struggling to find the right bar settings to brew myself a lungo 120ml...

So I need to upload an update but I did try it again with less coffee. They didn't leak but the coffee taste was quite weak. I'm actually haven't been using the machine at all at the moment due to the cost of everything. I have uploaded an update on my tiktok if you wish to check that out

After watching one of the videos cutting open a genuine Dolce Gusto pod, and also doing it myself, I have realized that the whole premise of these "reusable" dolce gusto coffee pods is false, because much of the mechanism for producing great dg expresso and coffee is built into the real pods' top and bottom which s-l-o-w-s the brewing process way down by tiny circular channels inside the pod and gives the end result in your cup its body and flavor. None of that structure is built into these so-called reusable pods. That structure is totally lacking! They are a waste of money! It's like turning your Dolce Gusto machine into a Keurig! Or worse, like making weak instant coffee from a jar.

You must fill the capsule 3/4 and tamp it very strong

Thank you these seems to leak when you put too much it I put 1 scoop in second time round as you can see in the video and it didnt leak but coffee tasted weak.

Your pre grindet coffee powder is not fine enough, the water flows to fast trough the capsule. You need a grinding mill to grind your fresh coffee beans finer. Pre grinded coffee is useless for the refill capsules. If you grind the coffee finer the water will flow less fast trough the capsules and extracts more coffee.

@@ThePredator2k thank you but unfortunately whole coffee beans and a coffee grinder aren't in my price range. This is a budget friendly channel lol
