    My first actual GPU was a R9 280X and I will never forget the HD7800 and R9 200 series...they still perform fantastic today, an HD7870 can still outperform a 1050 Ti in some games, although might not seem like a huge achievement, having in mind it's double the 1050 Tis age and can be found for 1/4 of the price, it's worth considering.

    • @arenzricodexd4409
      @arenzricodexd4409 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1050ti and hd 7870 probably around the same tier of performance. 1050Ti is improvement in this performance segment in terms of power efficiency. 7870 is 28nm with original MSRP of $350. 1050Ti is 16nm with original MSRP of $150.

    • @hunterfabio
      @hunterfabio ปีที่แล้ว

      @arenzricodexd4409 MSRP is one thing and second hand prices is another. The power consumption is not such a deal breaker...a good 350w with a 8+6pin can handle the HD7870 (and even more power hungry gpus)

    • @Nick_R_
      @Nick_R_ ปีที่แล้ว

      The 7870xt is the steal. It was really a 7930, but the marketeers thought it would ruin the 7950 sales, so they downgraded the label.

      @arenzricodexd4409 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had an XFX 7950 that was an excellent card 8 or 9 years ago as an older teenager. I ran a very heavy overclock on it to the point of stock 7970 performance and it ran my games beautifully. I also mined Bitcoin with it for extra money and ran it at 100+ degrees in the summer but it never let me down the whole time I used it and was a great GPU! It's still up in my closet as a backup card actually, haha. Neat to see how a similar card does with modern games!

      Same here, except mine was a Sapphire. Ran it with a core clock boosted up to 1200 [MHz] until I recently upgraded to an RX 580 8GB just last month. The card was powerful, but the 3GB really held it back. Won't be getting rid of it though!

  • @TheSpotify95
    @TheSpotify95 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    Not bad - like how you're testing more games so we get a more varied look as to how the card runs - with older cards like these, I personally find it good to see how they play the games that were around its release, as well as more modern titles. This one's probably better for older games, unless you want to use 720p low all the time.
    Hope you had a good Christmas and may you have good fortunes for 2023.

    I had a 4770k and 7950 boost system that served me well at 1080p from summer 2013 when it was built up until summer 2019 when Ryzen 3000 came out and the radeon 5700xt which I went with a 3600/5700xt combo then and been using since. It was a nice 1080p system right up until then when more modern games would be dropping below 60fps which was my cue I needed a better system. The 3 GB of VRAM also became somewhat a limiting factor in some games for higher settings as well in 2018/2019. Really liked that 4770k and Radeon 7950 boost combo though.

Dont know why but I feel that back then there was more "wow" effect when something new came out than it is now. 1Ghz, more memory, dual GPU cards, SLI/crossfire and other features that was real inovations and done great job pushing the margins more. Almost the same one as the ps4, very good performance. Sadly a good gpu held back by the cpu in the ps4 one.

    The Radeon HD 7970 was a high-end graphics card by AMD, launched on December 22nd, 2011. If only I could save time in a bottle.

      Trust me, you wouldn't want a HD7970 during it's life cycle.

    Very enjoyable review( love seeing old GPUs being tested ) , with good selection of games .... *BUT* with one major complaint :
    04:50 : my head simply blows-up whenever i hear someone with access to many people , proposing them to use modded/unofficial drivers !!
    *We don't live at 2000 anymore when things were simpler , but rather in the age of malware* . *Have you already forgotten the recent incident with a modded MSI Afterburner which was turning your PC into someone-else's mining tool , plus , it also contained an info-stealer malware* ????
    This is the age of malware , when everything should be downloaded by their official sites , otherwise there is always a danger to use a software just like this modded Afterburner malware !!!
    If anyone wants to risk using unofficial software that's their choice and that's fine , but listening someone with access to many ( potentially unaware/inexperienced viewers among them ) proposing to them messing with such things ... really blows-up my head , as i said ...

    Makes me wonder if I just like stopped getting that itch to always get more performance and have better hardware than before every couple of years, like the 4690k with a 1060 6gb would prolly be playable at 1080p today

    Seeing the old far cry makes me want to play mercenaries 2 for some reason
    And get bethini to remove the 60 fps limit from Skyrim

    Watching this video reminded me I was still running my HD 7950 at the time GTA 5 came out. Still running it in my "spare rig" which is basically the same one I was using back then i5 4690k, 16gb ddr3 and a 7950 =]

    I'd recommend getting a used R9 290/390(X) instead due to delivering more performance (RX580/GTX 1060-ish) and being fully DX12/Vulkan compatible.

    Seeing these new games struggle on the 7970 while not looking much better than 2016 games kinda makes me wonder if it isn't time to stop chasing graphical fidelity and focus more on optimization. Hell, I think companies would sell a lot more copies if they weren't gatekeeping their games by their laziness.

    Is there a way to bench this against the gtx 1060? Because I feel like it's just below or same now. As i used to have the gtx 680, it was the same as my gtx 1050ti. Which in turn same as 7970. Now this card seems very respectable now with surprising results so I feel it'll come out same as 1060 6gb
