Curious. So I just read it, harrowing and horrifying. But interesting. In the end, the real monster was society. She was naive and too trusting for sure. But overwhelmingly, the people around her were cruel. The 'undesirables' using and abusing her. Spent and broken like an inanimate object. The 'betters' abandoning and beating her like a rabid dog. Their ideals of a good person, hollow and fake. Overwhelmingly, the world around her was completely devoid of empathy. Her weak agency was continously subverted and worn away. Her connections severed and herself isolated. Every single person she met did nothing but use her. I kept hoping someone would help her out. To help break her out of the overwhelming odds. Alas, it never came. The needle was her last salvation. But alas, just as all the other times, her ally was a lie.
