Honestly, the game looks great. I was too old for The Pagemaster movie and video game when it came out, but the pixel art and technical wizardry going on here with the foregrounds/backgrounds is too good to deny. I even kinda like the Atari-looking pillars in the Mode 7 stages, and a camera that snaps left and right so you can see ahead of you is much better than your character being near the edge of the screen before it even scrolls. Despite your warnings, I'm going to have to give this one a try.

I had pretty fond memories of the Genesis version. It definitely felt like it stood pretty well among the Aladdin, Lion King, and Jungle Book games with the fluid animation and overall presentation. Kind of surprised you hated it so much but I never did try the SNES version.
Your reviews are the best on YT. Concise, hitting all of the points I want to know about. I love your channel. The only drawback for me is that I cringe so hard every time I hear that intro.
I had the movie in VHS when I was a kid. (Pretty solid kids movie from what I recall.) More to the point, before the movie was an ad for this game. And I remember thinking it looked awesome at the time. Guess its good to know I dodged a bullet by not picking it up. Oh yeah, the reason the game starts in this dark, gloomy setting? Its following the structure of the movie. The protagonist travels through areas in the library patterned first on Horror, then Adventure, and finally Fantasy. The Horror area is where he first ends up going.
I grew up with this game and remember looking for your take on it a few years back, so I'm glad you finally did! Doesn't seem to have aged well though!xD
A game doesn't have to be anything special. I find your delivery and the simple fact of sharing your opinion on things you're knowledgeable about as useful as it gets. Even if it's but hoarding of gaming knowledge on my end.
I had this game as a kid, and played it pretty religiously because of how much I loved the movie. I recently went back to it as an adult, and it definitely hasn't aged as well as I would have liked, but it was definitely worth the $5 I spent on it. Can't say how much nostalgia played into it, but I had a fun time revisiting this. That said, I still remember the paths so it was more down to execution than exploration so your mileage would vary. Also, it starts in Horror because that's where the movie starts. So the devs didn't have much choice in that.
I should have guessed it was a weird situation when the trailer ad for the movie borrowed the theme song for _The Last Starfighter..._ Which is my favorite movie, by the way, but aren't these things usually trademarked or copyrighted?
I had this game for the Sega Genesis. What I thought of it? Let's just say I traded it in at the same Blockbuster for a copy of Bubsy II, also on the Sega Genesis.
I don’t know why this one (as a movie) was swept under the rug. I used to rewind this tape over and over as a child. It related my imagination so perfectly, lol. I also had the storybook.
I live in Albuquerque, just down the street from Gamers Anonymous. Curious, how did you pick that store as opposed to the hundreds of other mom and pop stores across the country?
I have a vague idea of seeing a preview of this game on a magazine many moons ago. It did intrigued me by the screen captures alone, shame the game play is so off
One of my childhood memories is renting this game while me and my sister were at our grandpa's place, we played it a ton but definitely didn't finish it. We might've rented the movie as well can't recall if it was that that made the game better or if just being a new [to us] game was enough.
I vaguely remember a friend from my childhood playing this game. I also recall that he had a turbografx 16 and Bonk, so I always thought this was a TG16 game. I vaguely remember the movie but never remember the name of it.
It's funny how similar to Sega Aladdin this game looks. the sword, rope climbing animations, or even some sprites. I don't have the time to research that, but maybe someone knows, was it done by the same developers? How are these two games related? :D
Wow, it's rare that I feel like you haven't given a game an honest, fair shake! -- you're often kind to 'okay' games that others are too quick to ridicule. So I feel the need to respectfully share an opposing viewpoint. I played the snes version at a friend's house as a kid and thought this game was awful, borderline unplayable. I *later* played it on the genesis as an adult, and while it's not going to win any awards for best platformer, I was really surprised by how fun and enjoyable the genesis version was. It's actually become one of a small handful of games I tend to bust out every year around Fall/Halloween. I haven't done a side-by-side comparison of the different versions, but I think the improved resolution/viewing window and better controls help. Also, The Pagemaster movie itself is really good and worth a watch imho! By coincidence I had actually been planning to show it to some friends this coming weekend since it's got kind of a seasonal/Fall vibe (thunderstorms, the "horror" world, "kids on bikes" stuff, etc).
This is literally the only Super Nintendo game that I still have the cartridge for after twenty five years. Never got past “Horror” as a kid. Figured out the password for fantasy though…so that was a godsend for my brother and I
Dang. Some of the backgrounds and the spire work look so good. I’d be interested to see if the graphic designers for this game went on to do some other good looking games
How would you compare the gameplay with Harley's Humongous Adventure? That seems like the closest game I actually owned as child. (It came with the SNES, along with some other games and a cool case.)
I was the target demographic when this game came out. Got it on Genesis back then. I played it occasionally because the animations look good but could never get over the floaty feel of the controls. Also never got too far into it.
I just watched this with my kids last weekend after not having seen it since whenever it was in theaters... 1994 maybe? Anyway... it's not great. It's not terrible by any means, but it's an old 90s kids movie, through and through. I almost certainly rented this game at some point, but I hadn't thought about it until just now. Great video 10/10
The movie is one of my all-time favorites. Yeah it's corny and goofy at times, but the animation is top-notch. Not to mention really good voice acting.
I picked this up at a Goodwill about 15 yrs ago complete in box for $5 **Have never played it ..... might have to give it a shot! Haven't been to Gamefaqs in years ..... even though I was quite active on the web site at one time... Thx for review 👍😁
Absolutely loved the movie as a kid. I had no idea that there was a video game though. I might emulate it just out of curiosity (and to see if they tried to represent the cool paint scene in the beginning of the movie).
This movie rocks. Loved it as a kid. (Wonder how it holds up?) I rented the game as a kid and had no idea what to do or where to go. Spent the weekend in the first area of the first level.
I beat Pagemaster during a sleep over around the age of 10. One of those stay up all night with 5 friends taking turns to beat a game (that probably hasn't happened since the 90s). Everyone else got disinterested or fell asleep around the end of Horror. Granted that was over 20 years ago now, but I remember it being fun all be it difficult. Still think the movie is a good time; that's probably rose goggles too though. Those are eyes btw, not marbles. I'll have to play it again to confirm, but I think "don't touch it" is a bit harsh. This is probable a case of "you had to be there." and you weren't. By that I mean you had to be there in time, when it was new, to appreciate what made it fun.
The Pagemaster was a great movie that spawned a brief “library renaissance” for kids in the ~2 year period it was relevant.
I rented it once and I think I couldnt figure out where to go in one of the early levels. That was also 25 years ago.
The Genesis version is probably better because the higher resolution would give you more viewing screen
This channel always gets so many real comments once u upload , you have great fans
That background at 3:27 looks really gorgeous!
I like at 1:40 he's like, "You DO have a health meter here," as though it's one of the few plusses about the game.
Despite its issues I still love this game. It's very difficult at times and super inconsistent in quality and difficulty though!
Was gonna write it looks quite nice but started getting dizzy halfway thru due to the camera snapping back and forth 👀🥴
Man, I have been watching this channel since 2015. Does not seem like it's been that long.
I should have guessed it was a weird situation when the trailer ad for the movie borrowed the theme song for _The Last Starfighter..._ Which is my favorite movie, by the way, but aren't these things usually trademarked or copyrighted?
We don't watch your videos for advice on whether to buy or play or not. We watch because your views are entertaining.
FWIW, the value I get out of these kinds of vids is, at the very least, satisfaction of my curiosity.
I remember renting this one as a kid XD
That rope climbing animation is strait up rotoscoped from the genesis Aladdin
I had this game for the Sega Genesis. What I thought of it? Let's just say I traded it in at the same Blockbuster for a copy of Bubsy II, also on the Sega Genesis.
I remember the movie had the ad for this game on the VHS tape before the movie itself played
I watched the movie a couple times as a kid and despite not seeing it in years, I have small bits of it stuck in my head very distinctly.
I remember watching the movie several times as a kid. Not sure if it would hold up, watching it as an adult now, but back then it was great.
I don’t know why this one (as a movie) was swept under the rug. I used to rewind this tape over and over as a child. It related my imagination so perfectly, lol. I also had the storybook.
I extra appreciate videos of games like these that I’ll never even bother downloading a rom of. You suffer so we don’t have to, and I am thankful
I more so remember it thanks to the VHS tape of it (it has a promo of it in case you guys didn’t know) rather than the game itself.
I live in Albuquerque, just down the street from Gamers Anonymous. Curious, how did you pick that store as opposed to the hundreds of other mom and pop stores across the country?
My guess is he lives here like we do
Yo idk why u specifically mentioned the Gamers Anonymous in Albuquerque haha but I’m glad u did because I’ve been there!
How have you not seen that movie while growing up during that time?
It's funny how similar to Sega Aladdin this game looks. the sword, rope climbing animations, or even some sprites. I don't have the time to research that, but maybe someone knows, was it done by the same developers? How are these two games related? :D
You made me curious, looked up everyone in the credits on mobygames and there does not seem to be a connection
Childhood memory unlocked. Thanks man!
Total length of video: 265 secs.
Total length of "SNES Drunk": 4.5 secs.
1.7% of the video was spent listening to "SNES Drunk".
Lol, I had the exact same thoughts about this as a kid, and never made it past the first or second level. Why is the beginning so hard and confusing?
This brings back so many memories
That climbing animation sure looks a lot like the climbing animation from Aladdin on Genesis.
It plays exactly the same later on. Once you get a sword, it's 100% Genesis Aladdin LOL
The movie is one of my all-time favorites. Yeah it's corny and goofy at times, but the animation is top-notch. Not to mention really good voice acting.
I remember renting this game from Blockbuster as a kid, and never being able to make it past the opening area
The pixel art in this is super reminiscent of Earthworm Gym, same person?
How do you know about gamers anonymous in abq nm!? My home town haha. So awesome.
I hope you have a great rest of your day too brother ☺️👌🏻
I picked this up at a Goodwill about 15 yrs ago complete in box for $5 **Have never played it ..... might have to give it a shot! Haven't been to Gamefaqs in years ..... even though I was quite active on the web site at one time... Thx for review 👍😁
Is that Maculi Kulcan?
Absolutely loved the movie as a kid. I had no idea that there was a video game though. I might emulate it just out of curiosity (and to see if they tried to represent the cool paint scene in the beginning of the movie).
This movie rocks. Loved it as a kid. (Wonder how it holds up?)
I rented the game as a kid and had no idea what to do or where to go.
Cannot even imagine what the Gameboy version of this is like.
