people automatically trust the pet store sales people, so sadly they don't bother trying to learn more and pet stores push pet sales to kids that usually change their interests and get bored of pets leaving the pets to mostly fend for themselves in sadness and fear😢
I definitely think it's gotten better than it was 10 years ago! I see way more bin cages and deep bedding with people rehoming hamsters here but I of course also come across hams with small cages too :(
I try to educate Petsmart and Petco employees on proper hamster and guinea pig care and every person I've spoken too had no clue what was right and logical for their care..it's so sad. Management blames upper corporate decisions. Management says they have limited control to change things 😩@@Rynn21
Unfortunately, it's still seen as the normal thing to do - small animals in small spaces 😢. I wish people would realize how terrible it is for hamsters and other small pets to be confined in such small spaces.
when i saw him, i almost started crying. not because he wasn’t treated right but because he looked EXACTLY like my last dwarf hamster, misty. she had been rescued and also had a bar patch, the thing that reminded me of her most was the dark grey stripe down his back ❤

no matter how sad his situation was before, props to the mom for caring enough for him to rehome him! there are more than enough ppl that get hamsters and the moment the pet becomes unwanted, they simply refuse to take care of it untill it miserably dies. deffo not defending them for housing an animal in inproper ways, i am the first person to get angry at improper animal husbandry, but she did the right thing. In this day and age, the amount of people getting pets they arent equipped to take care of, will not slow down. and we cant just always beat on the people for rehoming their animals which in a lot of cases is doing whats right by the animal. especially in a case like this where the animal was provably loved to some extend. just... not in the proper ways thank you Victoria for giving this little guy another chance, he already looks likehe is enjoying his home!
We are getting an hamster this weekend. I mistakenly got a wire cage, but it is only temporary. I have an old 20 gallon (I think I know it is pretty big) aquarium that is just sitting doing nothing. When the clerk told me that is preferred I realized the cage could just be used until I can the aquarium cleaned and set up so the little thing can have a fun and enriching enclosure. I appreciate your videos. I have learned a lot. I am hoping to have the aquarium ready before it gets here so we don't have to worry about the cage at all. I never knew about the sand bath. thanks so much. My daughter is excited and when I saw we could DIY some of the burrows, etc out of cardboard she got even more excited when she realized we could make them together. thanks so much. so informative.

i’m so glad you were able to find and rescue this little guy! i have a huge soft spot for dwarf hamsters. i only have one right now, but at one point i had 16 due to an accidental litter. me and my brother bought two dwarf females from a VERY sketchy pet shop. both girls gave birth about a week after we got them. if it wasn’t for your channel and your knowledge, i’m not what i would have done. i built 14 bin cages for all the babies (once they were old enough to be on their own) and made sure they all had good bedding depth and a large wire free wheel. i’m very lucky to have parents that were willing to make a huge financial sacrifice so that all the baby hamsters (and their mothers) could go to good homes and be well taken care of. i made little care pamphlets and guides so that their future owners would be educated about the right kind of hamster care. i watched probably 100 of your videos getting information and learning about hamsters. i was also inspired by you to do my own research as well. all the babies were successfully adopted and i prayed that their owners would be safe and loving. both mothers have passed away now, but i still have one of their babies. i named him pipkin and he is more then 2 yrs old! he is very healthy and i think still has a lot of life ahead of him. someday i would love to rescue more hamsters, but for now now i’m really trying to focus on giving pip the best life. thank you so much for being a voice for hamsters and a patient educator for their owners. god bless 🤍🐹

Without your videos I wouldn’t know anything about proper hamster care. You helped my friend’s hamster so much. He was full grown Syrian living in a tiny cage with a 6 inch wheel. He didn’t fit and the cage was so crammed that he could barely even get to the wheel. He also had barely any bedding and no enrichment or shelter. My friend said that he was just lazy and that was why he never ran on his wheel. We had to take care of him for a week while my friend was away and we found your videos. We used my neighbor’s hamster’s old cage and wheel which were much bigger and now he lives there and is really happy. Thank you ❤

I had the same exact situation. I got my dwarf from a friend who kept him in a small bar cage. Hammy was so happy to be in a huge enclosure. He lived for 3 years which is crazy. He passed this year but I know we brought each other joy.

I got the 2 enclosures ready for them and I have things coming in the mail from niteangel and more. I had my mind set on a dwarf but the manager suggested that I look at the Syrians. They are adorable, named Sable and Jawhara (meaning a gem). I was sure that they were starting to fight, and that is why they wanted a syrian adopted. I bought both. 😊❤. I think Jawhara beat up on Sable as she is hiding and burrowing so much. I want to thank you for all the great info on hamsters. The enrichment, housing,food and more. ❤❤❤

Nickel is so cute! Just wanted to let you know that your videos make a difference. When we first got our Syrian hamster, Geronimo, we had him in a much too small cage with minimal bedding and nothing really to keep him entertained. He lived like that for a few weeks, but I watched your videos and ending up making him a large, double decker, bin cage. The bottom is almost full of paper bedding where he happily makes his tunnels and such and the top has a bigger wheel, a sand bath, and some other things. I also spread his food around now so he can forage. He seems much happier thanks to your educational videos, so thank you:)
This kinda stuff warms my heart, I am so happy you found him and now he’s living the good life. He is very cute and seems so open and loving. Very touching knowing he is stress free now in his vast, quality new environment. It does sadden me a bit that hamsters are so easily sometimes mistreated because people just don’t know how to take care of them. He's very sweet...Im glad he's already pretty tame, a lot of dwarves seem to be so skittish , even after attempted taming. I do wish that people would stop this notion that hamsters are a good 'beginner' pet for young kids. They're really not. I got my current hammy Muffin as a rescue, not from an unsuitable home I should add, he'd been beautifully cared for, but the site I used is awash with slightly peeved sounding parents trying to get rid of hamsters because 'my son doesn't take much interest anymore'. I'm hoping the gradual improvements in enclosures may help...the expense of them might make parents think twice! Also, great advice about never going to sellers homes alone! As a person who had only owned dwarf hamsters, nickel is adorable 🥰🥰 I have one right now and his name is pooh. Im glad you can provide your hamsters with such good care. Mine lives in a 40 gallon tank, he loves it. Youre the best victoria!! Update! I have just upgraded him to an ikea detolf, he now has a 12 inch wheel. I also just got a syrian, i made her a homeade cage thats 1016 sq inches. Her name is kiwi.
I had a very similar situation. I adopted my first dwarf off a similar site from a family that couldn't take care of her anymore. When I got there the cage wás big enough but besides that everything was wrong, a tiny wheel, a bed and nóthing else to do.. She had so many stress behaviors that never went away, no matter how enriched and calm her life was after. She passed away after a couple months of cancer. She was the sweetest, tamest baby, I was lucky to have had her for the little time she had left.
My current dwarf, Pixel, I adopted as a baby from a shelter that couldn't place her. She is a lot more shy, but it is incredible to see how a hamster can live and thrive when they don't have that trauma in them. ❤ Really love my little Pickle! And thank you for teaching me how to take care of them.
Just got on Craigslist to look for hamsters in need of rehoming near me and cried as I watched this video. Every single one of them (near me) are in those same small cages with little to ZERO bedding at all.

Nickel is just amazing! He looks so cute and happy to be in his new home. My hamster was also barbiting a lot in her previous enclosure and I wanted to prevent her to get the bald spots, so I rehomed her into a terrarium

Nickel is so cute! Just wanted to let you know that your videos make a difference. When we first got our Syrian hamster, Geronimo, we had him in a much too small cage with minimal bedding and nothing really to keep him entertained. He lived like that for a few weeks, but I watched your videos and ending up making him a large, double decker, bin cage. The bottom is almost full of paper bedding where he happily makes his tunnels and such and the top has a bigger wheel, a sand bath, and some other things. I also spread his food around now so he can forage. He seems much happier thanks to your educational videos, so thank you:)

This kinda stuff warms my heart, I am so happy you found him and now he’s living the good life. He is very cute and seems so open and loving. Very touching knowing he is stress free now in his vast, quality new environment. It does sadden me a bit that hamsters are so easily sometimes mistreated because people just don’t know how to take care of them. I just recently found your channel and I love and enjoy watching what you do for these beautiful creatures. 🩶

He's very sweet...Im glad he's already pretty tame, a lot of dwarves seem to be so skittish , even after attempted taming. I do wish that people would stop this notion that hamsters are a good 'beginner' pet for young kids. They're really not. I got my current hammy Muffin as a rescue, not from an unsuitable home I should add, he'd been beautifully cared for, but the site I used is awash with slightly peeved sounding parents trying to get rid of hamsters because 'my son doesn't take much interest anymore'. I'm hoping the gradual improvements in enclosures may help...the expense of them might make parents think twice! Also, great advice about never going to sellers homes alone! Have fun settling Nickel in!

I have just upgraded him to an ikea detolf, he now has a 12 inch wheel. I also just got a syrian, i made her a homeade cage thats 1016 sq inches. Her name is kiwi.

I had a very similar situation. I adopted my first dwarf off a similar site from a family that couldn't take care of her anymore. When I got there the cage wás big enough but besides that everything was wrong, a tiny wheel, a bed and nóthing else to do.. She had so many stress behaviors that never went away, no matter how enriched and calm her life was after. She passed away after a couple months of cancer. She was the sweetest, tamest baby, I was lucky to have had her for the little time she had left.
My current dwarf, Pixel, I adopted as a baby from a shelter that couldn't place her. She is a lot more shy, but it is incredible to see how a hamster can live and thrive when they don't have that trauma in them. ❤ Really love my little Pickle! And thank you for teaching me how to take care of them.

Just got on Craigslist to look for hamsters in need of rehoming near me and cried as I watched this video. Every single one of them (near me) are in those same small cages with little to ZERO bedding at all.
