  • Now that the engine is installed it is time for the final touches.
    Installing the push rods and checking the valve clearances.
    The engine overhaul manual requires a minimum of .030" to a maximum .110" clearance between the tip of the rocker arm and it's associated valve with the hydraulic lifters deflated.

    Good stuff Mr Lacey. Been flying for years and build many auto engines. Would love to learn more about aircraft engines. Keep the videos coming.

    Your videos would have been nice to have when I was getting my A&P certificates. The teachers really don't have the time to explain all of this and stand over some of the students while building the engines up. You would be surprised what goes on when you have people that have never worked on engines trying to understand what the book is trying to tell them about putting the parts together!
    Thanks for the videos.

    I always thought when you had hydraulic lifters you set them with zero lash, that's the purpose of a hydraulic lifter the fluid takes and gives it real time adjustment, we only ever adjusted solid lifters with clearance on non aircraft engines.

    • @521CID
      @521CID 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mark Nairn There's only 0 lash when the engine is running. Automotive and aircraft engines are that way. When the engine is off, and the lifters have no oil pressure, you get lash between your rocker arm and valve stem.

    Humm valve seats hammer out but I know what you are doing.. love it true motor man make it work with what ya got... been there done that in the auto world. Looking to get in the aircraft experimental side.

    I just found your channel and really enjoy it my question is on the hydraulic lifters will do. Change After the engine is run in the hydraulic lifters pump up with oil?

    Have you rebuilt any ground powers? 220 Continental. Do you adjust the valve lash same way.thanks

    So, reading the comments, some mentioned about hydraulic lifters and zero lash when the lifters are pumped up... so, can we safely assume that all o-470's & io-470/520 would have zero lash with pumped up lifters? Asking as an airboat guy in FL, not as an A&P mechanic

    • @benjigault9043

      Yes zero lash when lifters pumped up

    great vid ,,realy shows it well , but when u had small clearances at the start and need larger ones do u not need shorter push rods not longer ones ,,also it would be good to see how u reduce those lifters down ,, i saw the clamp but how do u know when they are on the bottom to measure all the best phil

    WHy do I think someone took this engine apart, threw the lifters and pushrods and rocker arms in a box and didnt bother to mark what cyl and exh or int. You did it probably al la the factory assembler. Good job. But if that were not the case, would a camshaft profile be called for?

    I had to do the similar thing on my lycoming IO-360 A1A motor, I’m trying to overhaul. I had question, if you can possibly help me out with. I measured my clearances, to which they are all in spec. The cam looked fine, when I pulled the cylinders off, and the lifters. When I go to rotate it, the cam gear is making a weird sound. The motor is obviously timed to #1 cylinder, at TDC. When I remove the pushrods, the sound goes away, but then comes back when reinstalling them. I’m guessing the valve guides are worn? Haven’t done a wobble test yet, as I was just going to replace all of them anyway. The motor was purchased used with a little over 1600 hours on it, no prop strike. Any ideas of what it could be? Here is a link to a video, I made with that sound it was making. Thanks.

    Mr. Lacey, I am a maintenance guy on KC-135's and I have been watching some of your videos of late, and they are good, but what I really want too know is how can I purchase one of your company T-shirts. I have to admit that is a bad ass maintenance shirt.

    Kevin, how long should a valve clearance job take on a Lycoming IO-540 K1E5? Can you give me a ballpark estimate in number of man hrs, both standard and worst case scenario?

    • @TheReadBaron91
      @TheReadBaron91 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Long time ago but, as long as you have the rubber rocker cover gaskets should be about a half hour per cylinder. Then you got a run it up and check it again

    • @airmech1985

      Because that engine uses hydraulic tappets. You adjust the clearance by changing the length of the pushrod. They make a few different lengths,hope this helps!
