Some of the weak points of the middle of the US run are kinda smoothened over quite a bit if you also read the UK run(that was inter-woven inbetween the US story) concurrently with it. Simon Furman did an amazing job with the UK run, which is why when Budiansky was done they brought Furman over to the US for the last about 30 issues, and he did a great job with it. Not trying to knock Budiansky though, he(along with Jim Shooter) deserves mad respect for playing such a vital role in fleshing out the entire mythos, characters etc. EDIT: Typed this out before it was said "didn't really enjoy it until the last 30 issues". LMAO. DEFINITELY read the UK run.
I’ve read the first 13 issues and liked them but then I didn’t read it until the last ten issues which I think are pretty good, so I need to go back and hunt down the in between comics. Great review
I really enjoyed this. I've always loved the Transformers. The comics seem like they definitely have some interesting stuff. Kinda want to read some of them now. Also... Unicron is such a good bad guy.
All those combiners are in the show but piranhacon appears in the US show but is in the Japanese g1 continuation. Did you ever check out the G2 comics that continues the story or idw's transformers Regeneration One which is a continuation of the comic rather than g2 but it's still written by Simon Fuhrman who wrote the last bunch of these comics and g2 as well as the British transformers comics
I read all.80 issues blaster was a lone waRrior Sparkplug hated the autobots lol Megatron didn't lead much Shockwave took over then ratbat then scorponok- thundetwing- straxus- and finally bludgeon The original 18 autobots all.died came back and killed off again by the 12th issue for the 1985 cast
Absolutely read the UK series. Brit stories were published weekly alongside a serialised form of the monthly US story, so 220 issues isn't as daunting as it first sounds. [edit: oops, that's 330 issues, wow. Still worth it]
Furman hated the binary bonded transformers he used issue 75 to kill.off a lot of them He seemed to like thunderwing and bludgeon and his math.sqhad he liked using them.overvand over again
I only have 40 out of the 80 issues. The first 50 are a lot of misses and the art work could be better. I have the last 10 issues and they're definitely the best. Still trying to get every issue.
It definitely got a lot better when Simon Furman took over the writing in the later issues.

I was *not* expecting a Sledge Hammer reference.
Even back then, none of us expected it.
I can see why people don't like it but as an 80s kid, I loved every issue.
Glad you told me Omega Supreme isn't a pizza. I never would have known. 🤣🤦♂️ (For real tho that made me laugh. 😂😂)
Made me hungry

Did you read the headmaster that are in-between 37 and 38? Or the gi joe crossover? Or the transformers the movie issues?
I agree with your assessment. The last 30 issues were awesome.
Pretty sure the pretenders are in some of the Japanese continuations of the cartoon
