I understand this woman's allegiance to communism at that time in her life. As the world works now any money you put in a bank account doesn’t belong to you, it belongs to the bank and they will give it to you as required. My old boss grew up in a communist country, her parents weren't in the communist party, and there was no law saying they should. Those that were in the party got better stuff.
If you listened to her reply in its entirety, she first corrected him on the name of the organization and then explained that membership is automatic once one reaches a certain age, and is eventually terminated. In other words, she didn't join the "young communists", but rather was a compulsory member for a brief time, just like the rest of her peers

My wife was affiliated with the communist when she lived in the Soviet Union. She explained that there was very little chance of a quality life without doing so.
