This was my first ever favorite Nirvana song. When we were in middle school (2001-2004ish) my mom used to take my sister and I to Best Buy basically every other week for us each to get a new CD because we both loved music so much. One time, my sister picked out Nirvana greatest hits which included this song as a special bonus track. IIRC, it was the first time You Know You're Right was ever released. Me and my sister used to have those CD players, the kind with two exterior speakers that could hold 5 or so discs at a time, in our bedrooms. And we'd hangout and play our new CDs together. I remember being instantly obsessed with her new Nirvana Greatest Hits CD and with this song especially. We both liked it, but I became a Nirvana/Cobain super-fan for years after that. You know how teenage girls always have a phase where they go hard for their chosen fandom? Mine was Nirvana and Kurt. I bought everything I could. One year, I even stayed up all night so that I could record the entirety of MTVs programming on the 10 year anniversary of Kurt's death. The last song the band recorded together. Dave Grohl said he hasn't heard it in years because it's too hard for him to listen to it knowing all that was going on at the time. Now that I'm listening to the lyrics, I can understand why :(
Nirvana, finally inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few weeks ago. Lots of respect and love from queens, n.y...R.I.P Kurt Cobain, the greatest songwriter of our generation

You can hear the sadness in his voice... You can tell he wanted to get away from Courtney. The lyrics tell you everything. I feel like he knew he was going to die and wanted a very last song to explain partly why. Of course I can never be sure because you never know with Kurts lyrics.
Considering "Do Re Mi" was changed to "Me and IV" because of Courtney, I can guarantee there's no "hidden message". Also the fact that he literally wrote the song on his bed next to Courtney. But of course as most gullible idiots, you think there's a bigger meaning.
A breakup is never easy when you're dealing with a narcissist all while battling depression and bad habits. I was dug deep in the same hole and it really does bring your self-esteem down but you know what they say about what's the best thing to do when you find yourself dug in a hole and that is to stop digging. It hasn't been easy to pick myself up again but thanks to their music and Kurt's lyrics I've been able to get some perspective on things. R.I.P Kurt Cobain
Yeah you're right. After all these years hardly a day goes by...EVER....that I don't listen to his music or hear a song of theirs or think about kurt. I wish the love from his fans would have been enough but it couldn't balance out the love/hate relationship with that she devil.
@@sethdickfield8430 I am a huge Nirvana fan,and would prefer to believe he was killed over him just giving in. But the fact is that Kurt was an addict, Both Layne Staley and Billy Corgan said it and went through the same emotions. Courtney is a total bitch but I don't think she killed Kurt. I think it was the immense amount of drugs that he used to fight his depression that killed him. Just my opinion.

The first time I heard this song I was in the middle of an overdose and I thought I was dying to it and it brought a deep feeling of I get you and then I passed out and woke up barfing everywhere and stuff and like it just has an extreme attachment due to that and I can listen to it over and over again for hours
I point to this song as an example when people question whether or not Nirvana would have continued to be great after In Utero. Kurt Cobain was simply an unreal songwriter, it's too bad he left us so soon.
Hey, it'll get better and remember it could've been worse and it could've gone for longer. You still have many years ahead of you. I was in love with my toxic friend and she gaslighted me, emotionally abused me, sent people after me, was/is saying things about me. Drove me to the point of 5 attempts. Kindness begets kindness, stay safe
Alright I’m back and things are great, it sucked than because school was shutdown, and my entire friend group didn’t care about me. School opened up, I connected with old friends from way back elementary school, and now I’m happy, I even got invited to a party for the first time since, well, elementary school! I remember feeling trapped, staying in my room, wanting to leave but there’s no point, I’d just sit their all day. So I’ll end with the cliche, just get yourself out there and you’ll make friends
What a f'n line "I will move away from here, you won't be afraid of fear" "No thought was put into this, I always knew it would come to this" Unfortunately, I fall right into line with Curt, Layne, Chris, and plenty other guys. We get too comfortable with the women we fall in love with, and we strip ourselves bare and share everything without a filter exposing only what we know about ourselves. We no longer maintain that "Daddy" persona to the woman and so her flight begins. They lose interest when they see any vulnerability. Most of the time his girl replaces him quickly after with a man that is everything he was at the begining of their relationship, she actually feels renewed, happy, and satisfied right away. Unfortunately, we feel exponential pain, because we have to deal with it alone and knowing she doesn't want to be bothered or lose focus on her new found happiness. We are not the type to replace her with interest in another, just not capable. Many times this leads to complete self destruction, or sadly for some suicide. It's happened 3x in my life and I can honestly say now, "i always knew it would come to this".
Hey that's how it gets to me as well. Glad I'm not the only one thinking I was strange. Cool that was a good ass explanation of the lyrics/situation. Thank you haha. Now I'm gonna get back to finishing my bowl
when anyone can sing about their personal struggles and make it universal , its so powerful.this song hits you right in the gut....it is so real. other bands should take note that this is how to write a good song.... so powerful...i think it means more now than it did when written.
I remember this came out in like 2002 and I could not believe I was hearing Kurt Cobain again in a "new song". It was surreal. Like John Lennon in the Beatles Anthology.
Blahblah Bluhbluh you're right about that it sometimes is wrong but if you check other sites you'ill see that it is most of the time 'pain'. Or just ask Dave. :p
Hells Bells mate is it not selfish to trade in a life so that a person could be in pain is it unselfish to put other people in pain to make your pain go away is that not wrong?
What I love about Cobain is that he seemed to always put so much energy into every song he did. This was his final song with the band and his band mates said he wasn’t doing too great. Even then he still showed so much emotion and power in every song he did until the final lyric
When I found out this was Kurts last song it hit me hard. Knowing that he was actually struggling unlike other artists who think it’s “cool” to be depressed. He is literally saying that he is going to kill himself because of Courtney.
+hoodlum xx my favorites from each album You know your right (greatest hits) about a girl (bleach) something in the way (Nevermind) Serve the Servents (In utero) and tie between been a son and (their cover of the Vaselines) son of a gun (Incesticide)
Am I the only one who senses a lot of optimism in this song? More optimism than most of his lyrics. Lines like "You won't be afraid of fear" and "I'm so warm and calm inside." I feel he achieved a sense of peace between the darkness.
These lyrics and the vocal performance reflect the state of mind he was in and emotionally what he was feeling those last days of his life. Very sad...this song is so powerful..definitely the most strong lyrically and vocally out of the whole catalog in my opinion. RIP Kurt
"THINGS HAVE NEVER BEEN SO SWELL I HAVE NEVER FAILED TO FAIL" And that he didn't he did exactly what he said he would do. Amen Remembrance is Presence (RIP) Kurdt Cobain
I always wondered if this was his farewell song to everyone. Unplugged was like he played his funeral. Look at the flowers and the somber nature of that show. This being the last song Nirvana ever recorded kind of cements that for me. The beauty of music and his art. We can listen to it and all have opinions on what this means.
Skrapeg0at I once saw a post of what would happen if Kurt didn't commit suicide. It said he would be found unconscious of an overdose, Nirvana would go on hiatus, He and Courtney would divorce and Kurt would get custody of Frances, Nirvana would return after the hiatus, and Kurt and Courtney would remarry
Kurt hated playing in Nirvana towards the end, it was purely a contract thing which he was legally obliged to uphold. He didn't want to do the last tour in '94, was forced to even though he was in a bad way, and the tour only got cancelled after he lost his voice having had bronchitis AND laryngitis. He said as early as February 8th that he hated everyone and everything and wanted to come home. By the time March came around he was at a new low with his heroin addiction, he was dealing with the thought that Courtney was cheating on him (which she basically was), and was stuck on tour thousands of miles from home with a band that he hated. I think he had suspicions as far back as December '93 that Courtney was cheating, so it makes sense that that was the subject matter for this song. Really really sad overall.
Kurt matured over time, made great albums. This was in my opinion, an Epic direction he was leaning in toward his death. If he could have continued another 5-10 years that would've been amazing to see his Work, and his lasting Influence on music today. I couldn't imagine how a longer career for such a Great Artist would have reshaped things.

Dumb and Lithium make me feel sad and happy at the same time depending on my mood, and l am very moody soooo... Its rare. Sorry for my bad english.

I remember back in 2014 when my brother picked me up from school, we were on the freeway and the windows were rolled down and we were listening to this song on full blast. I guess you can say this is when I discovered nirvana.
I feel deep pain listening to this ,as of writing I split with my girlfriend who I tried to help with her mental health and drug addiction , I knew trying to help I would become her victim but she was relentlessly pursued by sickos on social media as she was a ex actress . No matter how hard I tried, she pushed against me. At times she broke down realising the situation she had fell into and i was there for her, held her comforted her. We have limited communication now after just a week of splitting and I know one of the sickos is behind it and is whispering in her ear and trying to isolate her. Unfortunately I live around 300 miles from her now as I returned to my home town. Listening to this now I can feel the pain, anger, frustration and hurt Cobain felt at his time of writing and recording . God bless mate!

Brett Woodmansee it’s about his relationship with Courtney at the time he was going to divorce her before he died this was recorded two weeks before he died too just look at the lyric when he said “nothing really bothers her she just wants to love herself” he’s talking about Courtney
The last song the band recorded together. Dave Grohl said he hasn't heard it in years because it's too hard for him to listen to it knowing all that was going on at the time. Now that I'm listening to the lyrics, I can understand why :(
Source on the Grohl bit?
Nirvana, finally inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a few weeks ago. Lots of respect and love from queens, n.y...R.I.P Kurt Cobain, the greatest songwriter of our generation
And in their first year of eligibility too. :)
And songwriting wasn't even his main focus!
***** You weren't about that.
Your absolutely right...and who knows dave might be inducted in the future with the ffs....long live kurt...btw music suck these days all forms...im waiting to see that group the change the seen like nirvana did...music today reminds me of hair bands...cant relate to them..not like im ever gone to have my own Lear jet...1000 girls...crazy money...its the mid to late 80s all over again..give me a break smfh
*****
lol that was funny, rarely does a comment make me laugh out loud
You can hear the sadness in his voice... You can tell he wanted to get away from Courtney. The lyrics tell you everything. I feel like he knew he was going to die and wanted a very last song to explain partly why. Of course I can never be sure because you never know with Kurts lyrics.
Listen to do re mi demo that one seems like a hidden message like he knew what she was going to do like you said we'll never really know
Pretty sure do re mi was also one of his last demos
Well Courtney had him killed.
Considering "Do Re Mi" was changed to "Me and IV" because of Courtney, I can guarantee there's no "hidden message". Also the fact that he literally wrote the song on his bed next to Courtney. But of course as most gullible idiots, you think there's a bigger meaning.
courtney killed him for the money
A breakup is never easy when you're dealing with a narcissist all while battling depression and bad habits. I was dug deep in the same hole and it really does bring your self-esteem down but you know what they say about what's the best thing to do when you find yourself dug in a hole and that is to stop digging. It hasn't been easy to pick myself up again but thanks to their music and Kurt's lyrics I've been able to get some perspective on things. R.I.P Kurt Cobain
You can’t fake that chorus. That pain was real and we all felt it with him.
my depression song i come here when i'm depressed
I come here a lot
This song validates my feelings so often
Me too
I'm here all the time
haha i’m here rn
it's too bad he didn't realize he actually had real fans, and his band wasn't just part of a "trend" :(
Yeah you're right. After all these years hardly a day goes by...EVER....that I don't listen to his music or hear a song of theirs or think about kurt. I wish the love from his fans would have been enough but it couldn't balance out the love/hate relationship with that she devil.
Y’all know she killed that nigga right ?
@@sethdickfield8430 I am a huge Nirvana fan,and would prefer to believe he was killed over him just giving in. But the fact is that Kurt was an addict, Both Layne Staley and Billy Corgan said it and went through the same emotions. Courtney is a total bitch but I don't think she killed Kurt. I think it was the immense amount of drugs that he used to fight his depression that killed him. Just my opinion.
PrestigedIdiot scott weiland from stone temple pilots ended up dying that way too most of the 90s rockstars are dead although eddie vedder seems to be doing fine
List of those we have lost
-kurt cobain
-layne stayley
-mike starr
-scott weiland
-chris cornell
-chester bennington
-dimebag darrel
-vinnie paul
-bradley nowell
You know you're right
The first time I heard this song I was in the middle of an overdose and I thought I was dying to it and it brought a deep feeling of I get you and then I passed out and woke up barfing everywhere and stuff and like it just has an extreme attachment due to that and I can listen to it over and over again for hours
I’m glad you’re alive
Kiley777 7 thank you
You need to go to rehab man you can be better :(
I can say for a fact. I'm not a failure. Because I've never failed to fail
I point to this song as an example when people question whether or not Nirvana would have continued to be great after In Utero. Kurt Cobain was simply an unreal songwriter, it's too bad he left us so soon.
This song is screaming inside of me.
Finally left my toxic “best friend” it’s painful but this song speaks to me. It feels like this song wrote for me.
Hey, it'll get better and remember it could've been worse and it could've gone for longer. You still have many years ahead of you.
I was in love with my toxic friend and she gaslighted me, emotionally abused me, sent people after me, was/is saying things about me. Drove me to the point of 5 attempts.
Kindness begets kindness, stay safe
same, but with a guy a have a crush on :(
I sent this to my best friend last night with whom I wanted to end friendship and now I feel soo goood I can’t tell.
@@vahotwa464 another good song is “hows it gonna be” third eye blind
In the worst moments, I wish I could sing this to my older sister's face for all the emotional and verbal abuse she put me through.
@Hope Springs What good would that do? I've cut her out of my life for the most part.
Just remember, shitty people reap what they sow
Happy Birthday Kurt!!!! We all miss you!! RIP
I think he says “I have never failed to fail” this song is so damn powerful
What a f'n line
"I will move away from here, you won't be afraid of fear"
"No thought was put into this, I always knew it would come to this"
Unfortunately, I fall right into line with Curt, Layne, Chris, and plenty other guys.
"I'm so warm and calm inside, I no longer have to hide" best lyrics
I remember this came out in like 2002 and I could not believe I was hearing Kurt Cobain again in a "new song". It was surreal. Like John Lennon in the Beatles Anthology.
still listening in quarantine✊✊✊
This is a very hard and deep listen. I can’t imagine hearing Cobain’s voice again in 2002 after 8 years of emptiness
I HAVE NEVER FAILED TO FAIL
"I have never failed to felt"? You know you're wrong, you know you're wrong
DrunkTankAquaria those are not always right. i know im right :))
Blahblah Bluhbluh you're right about that it sometimes is wrong but if you check other sites you'ill see that it is most of the time 'pain'. Or just ask Dave. :p
Heosify so mutch knowledge, so litle feel ...
Blahblah Bluhbluh You know, you're right.
Fucking heartbreaking..all the emotions I feel hearing this song, the lyrics, his voice I can’t even put into words😢
The words of a hurt person have never hit so hard...
The intro and outro are so chillingly eerie, especially considering this is the last Nirvana song.
miss you....kurt
same 😩
Id trade any of these shitty pop singers for kurt but its too unfair of a trade 😭
+Ernesto Torres we can trade Justin Bieber for Kurt😓
I think we all do 😩
Hells Bells mate is it not selfish to trade in a life so that a person could be in pain is it unselfish to put other people in pain to make your pain go away is that not wrong?
I thought it was "Hey" instead of "Pain" ... :3
same :/
it's up for interpretation
I can't hear anything but 'Hey' years and years of hearing this....
I think he sings Heeeeinnn! To keep the AGGRESSION! If he said PPPAAINNN it would be a BIG ASS "POP" in the beginning
Dranreb Benedicto me too
What I love about Cobain is that he seemed to always put so much energy into every song he did.
He was murdered
@@lauraloyland3165 I mean he wasn't, he blew his own head off with a shotgun, but have you heard something else?
That bass line is sick
This is so freaking awesome! This is a HIT!
Imagine what their newest songs would be like if they were alive
They are alive. except for kurt of course.
+J Zombie (Clockwork Zombie) Yes but it would be like the Foo Fighters without Dave Grohl, it will never be the same :/
+Lézard Impérial dace grohl made foo fighters after kurt kobain died and it wasnt meant to go agaist nirvana
I know that, what is your point ?
+kyle blanford It's Cobain, dumbass.
I remember when this song finally came out or was officially released and was all over the radio. Great song.
That slowed snare at the end empties out the feeling. It really fits perfectly.
Best Nirvana song
i agree. for me its this and Something In The Way
+hoodlum xx my favorites from each album
You know your right (greatest hits)
about a girl (bleach)
something in the way (Nevermind)
Serve the Servents (In utero)
and tie between been a son and (their cover of the Vaselines) son of a gun (Incesticide)
opinion (the track) on with the lights out album ;)
Adrian Mm It's my favorite song!!! 😄
I love you kurt.
Me too.
Am I the only one who senses a lot of optimism in this song? More optimism than most of his lyrics. Lines like "You won't be afraid of fear" and "I'm so warm and calm inside." I feel he achieved a sense of peace between the darkness.
Sometimes depressed ppl feel a wave of optimism before they kill themselves because they know the pain will soon be gone. :(
Most of those lyrics were Cobain's dark sarcasm
I thank Kurt everyday, man. This comp this song came out in saved my life. Never get tired of saying that.
Someone should blast 2:26 - 3:15 through Courtney's bedroom window in the middle of the night. It'd scare the fuck outta her.
Feline Fatale That sounds... Fatale.. xD
I was laughing a good 5 minutes at this comment
That man did not kill himself..
I like how cleverly Cobain rhymes “this” with “this”. Genius.
I’ve listened to this song a million times and every time I can’t believe how good it is.
Amen
Remembrance is Presence (RIP) Kurdt Cobain
ROCK ON!!
Nope, it's failed to feel, pain.
If you wrote his lyrics by how he pronounced them then no song would be what we know.
Jeff Castor ...Kurt Cobain contradicted himself, from real life to his lyrics.
"I have never failed to FEEL." Kurt was empathetic to a fault. That line doesn't have shit to do with his "suicide."
You know your Rights! At the the end wow!!!! All the years I just CAUGHT that! Brilliant!
i was 11 when i first heard my first nirvana song back in 1994 and have been listening to them everyday since
I always wondered if this was his farewell song to everyone. Unplugged was like he played his funeral. Look at the flowers and the somber nature of that show. This being the last song Nirvana ever recorded kind of cements that for me. The beauty of music and his art. We can listen to it and all have opinions on what this means.
Yep, the divorce was foreseeable within this song.
Oaf Lodge that's just sad man
Angle
I think this was actually about his mom
pain, it demands to be felt.
I Just wanna know... When you first started listening to Nirvana, what feelings you got?
l remember feeling really sad, l dont know why, this song even made me cry... Dumb and Lithium make me feel sad and happy at the same time depending on my mood, and l am very moody soooo... Its rare.
Sorry for my bad english.
I started listening to them just right before he died so I felt horribly depressed listening to them. I still love the band.
Link 1822 your english is pretty good dude
Penelope Jenna Hensley thank you
I feel so much power, I was a kid and I didn'd know how to speak english, but the angry, the rage of lithium surprise me so much...
Link 1822 i always think of shotguns when i think of Nirvana... 🙁
The Music Video made me cry we love you Kurt RIP
Greatest break up song ever recorded
I'm a PI and I've been working on this case for a long time and I say that it's impossible to feel comfortable saying Kurt killed himself because the bottom line is that he didn't
Rip Kurt man☹️ this is the last song they wrote and recorded
Well, it SO SO SO DEEP ONSIDE ME THAT NO WORDS NEEDED😢
Get me back in 90s
This always reminds me of what could have been if Kurt would have stayed around a bit more among us... Long Live Nirvana.
This song is my depression song, i come here when I feel fucking sick of people and their lies, and when I'm sad as fuck because i feel lonely :3 and I never fail to feel pain...
LarnaStorm Out of curiosity, do you write music?
LarnaStorm He doesn't say pain. It's not the lyric. The lyric ends with "I have never failed to fail..." thhhheeeennnn... the next lyric is "Hey, you know you're right.." .... Seriously.
henry hodges "He doesn't say pain." "It's not the lyric". The department of redundancy department would like to give an extra passive-aggressive thank you to a certain Mr. Hodges. That's what we'd like to do.
Goose bumps. Anybody that’s ever felt not good enough can comprehend the hurt in Kurts words. The key is how ya cope with that pain.
This song is like a Soo-cide note. Chillingly sad headspace.
The perfect song for when you are fed up with life
“I have never failed to fail” this is the part of the song that hits me hard cause it just applies to my life so much right now
When he yells PAIN!! it's almost like he realized what his depressions were about, just pain, all he ever felt frequently was pain. This is like the song that seals his statements. It's the full stop.
Finding this song in high school at 13 changed my life.
When he said "I will never bother you"
He wanted to say he is going forever.
Best song ever by Nirvana.
This song helped me through a tough rejection
I can never get over this track . It's addictive.
lyrics were actually written by Kurt Cobain
wow dipshit
Tipon2424 Very eloquent
John Collier indeed
there sick 😋
yeah 1 wrote this song...and every other nirvana song their is je evem wrote the basic drum *lines for dave and just let him expand on it as long as it was decent...krist was the obly one trusted to make good music and wrote his own baselines

nothing hurts more than when someone else is right- pride
I remember when this song first came out and I heard it on the radio. I knew it was a dark song. I loved it, but didn't pay much attention to Nirvana at the time this song was released. Now Nirvana is one of my favorite bands and this is one of my favorite songs. this song has a sadness to it. you can hear Kurt's pain, anguish and hopelessness in this song. the melody of the song has a darkness to it. this song is a lot better than many songs today
I'm from 3030 n this guy got brought back by a strand of hair n lived on to make great tunes till 2040 mans rocked on
imagine how amazing the new album would have been...
If there's such things as alternate universes out there. I hope they have this album.
So I was a huge nirvana fan between 13-17, im 21 now and have taken a huge break from their music. Something I always remember is this song, my friend showed it to me and I was frozen. It just felt different than any other song. Come to find out later when I bought the 20th anniversary mag for kurts death it was Kurt’s last song recorded. Songs got soul.
Interesting! I pretty much had this same path as you
@@Johimitsu I honestly think it was the best ages to listen to nirvana, something about all them hormones make's it all the more better 🤣
If Kurt was never unalived this is what should have been one of the gigs in woodstock 99
why is there even a dislike button for this song or this BAND??!! NIRVANA ROCKS
