  • Jesus launched his Galilean ministry in Capernaum, calling his first four disciples from the fishing docks along the shore of the small town. His powerful "Follow Me" summoned men to leave their profession and the new rabbi in an adventure they could scarcely imagine. The following Sabbath, Jesus brought stunning message to the synagogue, delivering words so weighty that the people were struck and amazed at his authority. Mark thus calls our attention to the first of the great themes of his Gospel, the unqualified and weighty authority of this one whose reputation began immediately to spread into the surrounding regions.

Dear Bruce. I loved this lecture especially. I am a mystic, trained in Meditation, Prayer and Dreams since my teenage years. I used to go to church camp with Scott Sparrow. He is now a psychotherapist and author. He wrote a book that you might really love called, "I Am Always With You" It is a collection of visions of Jesus reported by many people from all walks of life and faiths. The issue of Jesus' authority is so true, I hadn't stopped to think about this in relation to his calling Disciples. In almost all of these stories of modern visitations, the people express the intensity of the Christ's gaze, the enormous power of his presence. My own visions and dreams of Jesus were like that as well. His gaze has an overwhelming power like nothing else I have ever experienced. The power of it stayed with me for several days, slowly fading. If such a being said "Follow Me" there is no argument or debate, there is no question about who he is. He is Divine Love incarnate, beyond belief and reason. One "follows" him for the rest of your life. Many in Scott's book express the same conviction in many different ways. I have been through many trials in my life, but those early visions from my youth have anchored me throughout my life. Nothing and no one was ever able to shake my faith because of his presence in visions and dreams. I encourage you to read Scott's book. I am now a cancer patient and I now take it with me whenever I have a Doctor's appointment or treatment. It is such a comfort and inspiration as I read and reread it. I also have many vivid dreams now which guide me I think. Again, I trust their authority and that Christ is still leading me. I have no reason to give to convince anyone. It is just true in my heart. I thank you for your marvellous lessons. They are so helpful and inspiring. I know you are guiding many people into that Divine Love, sharing Christ's authority calling us all. Amen.

You need to turn away from those practices and follow Jesus only

This comment should come after my first comment, but nevertheless all of the disciples obviously went back to their trade of fishing, when Jesus came to the dock where they were fishing, and called them out to full time ministry. Matthew 4: 18 thru 22

Andrew and John were the first men to follow Jesus as they were diciples of John the baptist. John 1: 35 - 42. John as his custom was, too modest to mention himself, but implied that there were two men who followed Jesus that day, and only mentioned Andrew.

Great lecture. So informative in background history and culture. You haven’t broken down the word “authority,” though. Did it mean that Jesus could recite verses from Scripture (the Old Testament) off the top of his head to prove every point he was making with those in the synagogue? Also, wasn’t there a prescribed order followed in the synagogue with two kinds of scriptures that followed a sequence throughout the year, or was that later on? I would imagine that the discussion that followed after those readings was one to which everyone could contribute (leading to oral Law and written down in the Talmud later in). So when Jesus was speaking, he was not just a passive participant in the process, he was steeped in the Torah and his own brand of faith, which blew the others away (especially the scribes, as you said) and people’s eyes were suddenly opened to a new interpretation of what had been the authoritative source to Jews for so long. He was, in effect, taking the authority of the Torah and changing it into something else, thus demonstrating a new kind of authority, the authority of a new version of the law, and that authority would make him a leader to those who were willing to subjugate themselves to that version (and to become part of a new kingdom?)
Just some thoughts on your very educational and enlightening lecture series.

Thanks for your thoughts. I treat the character of authority in Christ is some detail as the series proceeds.

@@GoreBruce I just listened to this lecture again, and I have to say that I must not have been paying attention the first time because you do give the Greek word for authority in this lecture, and you talk about the two kinds of authority, bureaucratic and charismatic, and you also talk about the “inherent authority of God’s word.” And you add that this authority is transferred to his disciples-from God, through him, to them. (Matthew 38: 28-20) You also explain the importance of God’s authority in our lives. (Proverbs 3:5-6 is a good guide for that acceptance as well.) After reading the comment that preceded mine, I can really appreciate that. So I stand corrected on my original comments.

You can find Scott's book on Amazon under G. Scott Sparrow, I Am With You Always: True Stories of Encounters With Jesus. Bantam, 1995. Scott is also a member of the International Society of Dreams. They are mostly psychologists who do research on therapy and dreams. Fascinating group. Hope these references are helpful. What amazes me is that Jesus' story is not mere history in an ancient text. He still appears to people and calls them and guides them to help him heal our world. There is such a great need, and he is still serving us, connecting in personal, private ways with so many souls. There is so much work to do. Thank you for blessing so many people through the internet and through your classes.
