A tragic memory, so much infrastructure swept away with the stroke of a pen.

Halcion days. The sun shone brightly (despite all the smoke) and it looked so busy at the junction. Thanks for sharing these film clips with us, it magics back lost times, places and people.

What a sad shot of Woodford shed. I went round there as a kid with my dad, when it was busy with V2s, B1s, etc

Deliberately run down by the London Midland region , as was the S and D.

Excellent video of lost times. Many thanks for uploading.
Reminds me of a time when, traveling North on the adjacent M1 motorway with my parents, we raced a black 5 for a few miles passing Ashby Magna station. Great days!

Ernest Marples has alot to answer for. He commissioned Mr B to shut as much as he could get away with. The final stroke of the pen was Barbara Castle, labour party.

What a waste, of all the railway closures of the 60's the Great Central was probably the most inexplicable and short sighted, how useful it would be today.

As much as a lament the closing of the Great Central, if you read “The Great Central Railway - What really happened” by John Palmer you can see that it’s closure was inevitable. It’s main income of freight, and especially coal, was on a rapid decline and its revenues were rapidly decreasing, there was little choice but to close the line. Shame they didn’t just mothball the whole route for possible future use though - as others have said, how useful would it have been today as HS2!

Oh how we could be making use of the old Great Central.

Nothing wrong with a bit of smoke, nature causes it all the time.
