Mistake 6: This is one of the biggest reasons I play on Survival mode. Because fast travel is disabled, and compass ticks have a much shorter range, I find I am wandering the wastes quite a bit more. It also makes settlement building a key mechanic that I need to engage with, as I can only save when my character sleeps.
Lack of fast travel is the only reason I'm not a fan of this mode. Wandering and exploring is fun but If I just want to go straight to sanctuary I don't want to spend 2 hours walking if I'm on the other side of the map. I just wish they would have made it to where you can choose what gets disabled and enabled because I like the idea of not saving unless you rest and having to eat drink and sleep as well as getting sick but I can stand the tedious walking everywhere especially since there isn't a horse or car anywhere in game without mods.
@@sgtpastry I really love the idea of survival but get really frustrated with the lack of save points, I really don't like "re-doing" stuff when you lose progress. I should really just get a save anytime mod and get into it!

@@UnkieNic I personally enjoy the personal vertibird mod. Where you can craft you're own vertibird, and have it fly you around or you can kinda fly it yourself.
As for saving with Survival, there's a few good mods for that as well, they really do make the survival experience a little more forgiving, and kinda reminds me a bit of how the F76 mechanics work.
@@UnkieNic i really just install this one mod that adds a quick save item into your pipboy so you still have to consciously save and the threats of dying will get ya. Tbh nowadays i run survival options to allow autosaving like normal just due to new gen update not agreeing with something in my pc causing crashes. But i think survival mode lets you think of plenty of new ways to play the game that you'd never think of normally! Vertibird grenades are the best way to get around in survival since they are speedy and up in the air so you can get from point a to point b with little contest, BUT you still need to discover that place on foot first without being killed with the 2x damage you are receiving, my normal mode builds are typically and automatic and melee weapon brute but survival makes me play more like a scout that you survey an area and come back later with your good stuff since power armor is slow, carry weight is reduced and ammo has weight so you arnt hauling your heavy strong weapons when you explore. Just my 2 cents tho and highly recommend you play it!

Putting fun first is my favourite thing to do in a game. Sometimes I don’t grab certain perks cause I don’t want to be too powerful.
This advice is the exact type of shit I like to hear! People optimize the fun out of games now
"optimize the fun out" is exactly how to put it. Gotta leave room for imagination!
The problem with levelling up fast is once you hit the level you want you are still levelling. You hit the unbalanced higher levels where every enemy is too weak or too strong. At that level you do not leave the Fatman and Quantum at home.

A bunch of those I do routinely. Maybe not to the extent you're ''preaching". But it is so much more fun to make a character around a story rather than the stats. It's fun to just randomly pick a direction and see what comes next. And I love finding creative uses for perks that, on face value, don' seem to be worth much. Mister Sandman? Hell YES! Great video. Very entertaining to watch.
Love digging into the weird and "bad" perks. Same with most games, play that low-tier fighter, use the non-meta guns in a shooter. Experiment!

The inverse of the first tip, the Average Joe/Jane. Take all 4s, or cloe to it. Don't have the points for the perks you want.
My favorite playthrough was a drunken master. Punching everything while stacking multiple alcohols for massive boosts. Rooted, Moving Target, Blitz, Party Girl, Better Criticals. BUT, I started the game with S5 P1 E5 C6 I1 A6 L5. Meaning none of the perks that make this build work. And let me tell you, trying to run at everything to punch them, without the perks to bolster your damage and survivability, is a challenge. But, that slow progression to all the stats I needed made the result all that more satisfying.
Hundreds of hours in to multiple playthroughs, and I love this so much! There’s nothing like whipping out your new mini-nuke launcher in an early level to just finish a fight that you’re not yet ready for. So fun. Great list!

Avoiding fast travel is the best advice you could give in this video. I’ve found more things going to a mission the old fashioned way and running it. Not to mention ton that’s how I’ve done my best scavenging for good junk. Found the alien gun on that little green dude. There is so much good stuff to be found. The makers of the game really did get extra creative with particular attention to the little details
100%, all the best stuff in Fallout is just out there waiting to be discovered
You actually do benefit from having over 10 in a stat. especially charisma since to reliably pass some charisma checks you need more than 10, and the higher your charisma the better your buy and sell prices, and it scales to a silly degree. With 16 charisma I was able to buy a shipment normally costing almost 2000 caps for 500.
Get so likable they're paying YOU to take the shipments away :p

The good guys guides may get too long fast, but these bad guy guides are always too short.
I ended my stockpiling weapons syndrom just recently and only regret it when I have to loot the ground since everything falls down from explosions.
When building, like recording, the best creations come during messing around at the end before sleeping.
And save before every conversation so you can try out all sarcastic comments😂

I recently started playing without map markers and just searching for things based on what the NPC’s who give me the quest tell me (or if they tell me absolutely nothing checking its location on the map then turning the marker off) and it’s completely changed the entire game for me. It genuinely feels so new and so much more magical and adventurous. When I’m supposed to find something in a building I actually have to look for the item. I also never take aqua girl/boy or anti-rad perks so that there are environmental hazards that I have to try to plan a route around.

If you want a compromise between fast travel and not, you can always only fat travel to statements you own (or have supply lines to and from) you'd still be able to get around the map alot quicker, but it still locks away a fair bit, and it incentives keeping you're settlements happy, as you don't want to lose them. it really come down to preference

Mr. Sandman isn't a "bad" perk. It gives you extra damage with silenced weapons! Pretty strong if you ask me. Great video!
The thing about the XP and not trying to level up ASAP is that you DON'T want to do it, not only because it makes the game last longer, but because if you do it too quickly, you might be able to find cool loot and gain more perks early on, but that doesn't mean you will find better loot earlier on... but you WILL come up against nastier/tankier enemies early on, which will then become (slightly) harder to kill because you haven't had time to stockpile a lot of good ammo or weapon.
Like you said, there's no level cap, so you may as well take your time to gain the XP, as it'll give you more time to become ready to start hacking your way through bigger foes when they start to show up.
I periodically get pissed off when I see people survive more than one hit in Fallout games... Then I remember I always over commit to being a smooth talking ninja and drop my endurance to at most 2.

making an imbalanced character isnt a mistake if you know what your playstyle will be. I like the 10 int, 1 end 1 strength character
big brain smol scrawny body. Power armor is very useful early on especially. also building robot sidekicks becoming some kind of wasteland tony stark

Using Fast travel completely shifts the experience from immersion and exploration, to a checklist and filling in to-do boxes. Planning and equipping for journeys. Settlements are important as way stations. Speaking of adapting, if you forget something, you can’t just warp back and forth, and have to make do.

Yeah, Fast Travel is one of those things that's so convenient and expected I don't think they could ship a game without it, but I secretly think the games would be better without.
Another commenter mentioned the carriages in Skyrim and I think something like that would be better. An "in-world" way to fast travel when you really just need to get all the way across the map, but limited to cities and places driving services would naturally go. "Sorry, but you still have to scale Mount Doom on your own"
Sold! I took over 600 hours to beat FO4 the first runthrough on hard difficulty. Now, I'm taking things a little faster with a Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell) sniper stealth build, avoiding The Minutemen (cuz reasons), and I'm having a blast! It's nerve-wracking and anxiety-riddled and fun AF! I've watched, listened and read possibly as many hours of FO4 content and agree; I developed a back story, made my character and I play the game the way I want to play. Thanks for your affirmation of my choice to make my own choices AND mistakes, cuz it's MY game and having fun is the WHOLE point. Period!

No HUD gaming is something I try in many games.
I used to play this game "Red Orchestra" which was a WW2 game and it had a really interesting "no HUD" style. There was SOME info, like when you changed mags it would let you know if the mag felt "heavy" or "light", but wouldn't tell you how many bullets exactly.
My bro is playing Escape from Tarkov and tells me it has a similar vibe. I should give it a try sometime.
I enjoy this lil video essay! Such coincidental timing too, just made a Gun Fu character that was 10 agility at creation. Having so much fun trying to run into battle purposefully outnumbered, just to proc the skill!

You're trying to avoid the "stealth archer" build types. Always fun when successful. Ran a play through as a strictly melee build once. It was hard AF until like level 30-ish.

Honestly, i think that mistake 2 is actually how power armor is meant to be used in fallout 4. It's all over the place, but fusion cores are rare.
I would like to say thank you for the bad advice, it has given me some ideas to try and play Fallout a different way instead of the tried-and-true path. One of my favorite games of all time is oblivion which allows you to wander all over the place and run into Random Encounters just for the heck of it.
Oblivion is SO good.
I actually have to confess, several of these tips come from watching my brother play Oblivion WAY back in the day. He used to hard commit to playing a barbarian who never used magic or arrows and always walked everywhere. The legend of Stahlbrand will never die

I'm actually doing something like this in my current game. One Str and End (bumped to 3 at the cost of an EXP reduction thanks to the Alt Start mod adding New Vegas like Character Traits,) Ten Chr and Int, with 6-8 Agi and Luc, and no fast travel except via mod added vehicles or institute Teleportation. I'm also keeping a journal on a Google doc and writing stuff whenever something somewhat interesting happens in game. (14 hours in and I'm at level 12 and just reached Diamond City)
I've even Uninstalled mods that give me a few perks from the start, and makes all perks have no level or SPECIAL requirements, because I found having top tier guns at such a low level Boring! Being OP is fun at first, but gets boring quickly.
That's some pretty bad advice, and I agree with most of it. I love playing without waypoints, but I have to get all of the crafting perks, and it is just so hard for me to start the game with 10 on any special, it would be so easy though if the game let you have a natural 11 after using the bobblehead
Adding to number 2, I played on survival difficulty and would use nuka cola quantums for caffeine LOL, I would prefer to explore longer than sleeping so they come in handy at waking up my character in a pinch
My 10-1 build was 10 charisma and 1 luck. You don't need luck when you can sweet talk your way out of it! Also, I wait until my stats are at 10 before collecting the bobblehead. Your stats can get boosted to 11 and give a slight bonus.

literally just made a stealth sniper build last week with 1 endurance and 1 strength (of course i got Gun Nut) .. but i am actively avoiding stuff like armorer and more endurance to force myself to stay in the shadows
and some guns (specifically scopes) require the science perk so imagine my glee when i find gauss rifle with a night vision scope AND a suppressor (top tier feeling)
and the 1 strength is to force myself to only carry a sniper and pistol

Gun Nut rank 2. Gun Nut rank 2 is the rush. I want gun nut 2 BEFORE i've explored half the commonwealth already because I like sniper builds and silencers aren't available until rank 2. Yes, you can build your own with items that spawn in in concord/trudy's inventory without it, I'm aware, but is that REALLY any different/"more fun" than spamming shelves in sanctuary until I'm level 13? You can sneak into the house with the .308 pipe rifle without interacting with the raiders attacking concord, and kill the raiders in front of Trudy's shop from a distance with a grenade. It takes just as much effort/is just as much after the 12-15th time doing it as spamming shelves does.

Recently got a 2 shot shotgun (not the combat one), seeing that plasma pistol hurt a little
lol, there are scatter guns, and then there are SCATTER guns.
If you were a Canadian, calling a Two-Shot double barrel "The Double-Double" would kill in every room (not sure how it would play in areas without Tim Hortons coffee)
My last few characters have been A=9, I=1--going for blitz at level 2. It's pretty fun. With melee characters, the crafting isn't that useful.
I still wouldn't take sandman, because just stabbing them while they're asleep usually kills them. Not in one hit, but before they can get up ;-)
I love wandering around and finding things. I know the map pretty well by now, but I still occasionally notice something I hadn't noticed before.
I had a lot of fun in Far Harbor recently which I've played before but didn't fully explore. Nice to be running into new surprises even after all these year
On the optimizing XP advice, i say take idiot savant no matter if you have high intelligence, cus it's funny and even your unlucky 10INT sole survivor will trigger it sometimes
I'm playing a character that's has PERCEPTION as their elite stat for the first time and regret never doing so before it's AWESOME! Specced into heavy Gunner demo expert and gunslinger on survival, no sniper or rifles, no high agility for a ton of AP so you better play well and very little Luck to bail you out. NO endurance perks taken by level 50, and still going strong 😊
I've never had so much fun and eventually Macreadys perk killshot with penetrator and concentrated fire is so stupid in the best most FALLOUT way
And i love the *bad perks that affect VATS, they add more to VATS and you'll be seeing that screen a lot, make it worth it
I tend to keep Perception low or somewhere in the middle, I should give it a try sometime!
Before you leave the vault take the red menace holotape it gets you a nice starting caps if you sell it and go and get dog meat before you meet preston then go back ti the vault and get the cyrolator sell that to

I actually went for 1 endurance for my 2nd playthrough. It works fine as a sniper playthrough. 🤣🤣🤣
Mistake 4 though, I did that on my first BLIND playthrough, man I had a terrible time progressing because how shit my damage is

i recently changed my outoging damge to 0.4 and my incoming damage set to 2.5, and the health added per level to 30 for enemies. the only way to enjoy the game again is to make it harder :/
I like to get all the special stats to 10 before i pick up the bobbleheads. Permanent 11 stats.

#6 what quest's, I turn em off and go walk-a-bouts. My last play through I didn't rescue Preston until level 47. I'm forever doing "oww what's that over there" soon followed by shi Shi Shit, run run Run.. fking bloodbugs arghhh.. n realised my last save points was like 3 hours ago 🤣
I just thought it was my ADHD kicking In.
and you can also get some really good or funy dialogue options. Like walking up to Vergil before you even go have breakfast with Mr Cornflakes Kellogg.
All this speed run stuff 😒 naa go explore n loot/kill stuff and botch your build stats.. makes the game Much harder

Я столько раз начинал играть в Фоллаут, но каждый раз пытался сделать персонажа "максимально эффективным", по итогу ради получения опыта и очков способностей я проходил игру полностью от и до, а персонаж всё ещё не удовлетворял меня, ведь я открыл ещё не все нужные перки... на 106-м уровне, лол. Я создавал крутого персонажа, но я не получал от этого удовольствия, каждый раз откладывал дух приключений на потом ради эфимерной эффективности.
А потом я просто забил. Играть стало гораздо интереснее. Если вы так мечтаете о каких-то перках или идеальной пушке, прокакче... просто выдайте их себе читами и всё. Зачем терпеть и проходить всю сюжетку, если ты хочешь играть к Костюме Отца уже со старта?
TLDR version do a ten build and use the good stuff, can't think of where to put the 10 there are builds for that and are not maximized (kinda). LV I have one that makes the game fun do a build like the paladin build from like fudge muppet but don't just use one weapon, cause it's so much fun cause power armor and big weapons. Carrying a fat man, missile launcher, and minigun (later Gatling laser) and screw ammo preservation. ope ran out of ammo time to pull out a freaking sword (cause roleplay) while killing every thing in the name of the brotherhood. Oh look random deathclaw or mirelurk queen pull a HYMT (HIMYM reference) with fatman. he said it when I played other characters I never used the good stuff. I used one or two really good weapons, the best armor and the best perks have fun with it!!

It IS a lot of fun to free yourself from the typical "I should save this" impulse and just USE all the big guns all the time. Really changes the perspective
