Great explanation of how the tree will sacrifice the leaves if there are more than the roots can support! The tree isn’t necessarily dying just because it has a few dried out leaves. It might just be shedding leaves it doesn’t need or can’t support. Brilliant! Thank you for such great content as always!
Basic and brilliant! Thank you so much for your encouragement. We don't all live in the same climate; some of us need to water twice daily. You're right, it's not a chore.
I love listening to you, no music is one of the best things about your channel. You have inspired me to try to bonsai things I never thought to try. Thank you
Good information. Many years ago shown soaking pot in container of water. I was able to save all but one. Watering and keeping our bonsai hydrated and fertilized cannot be over expressed. Going to retry Maple forest, as last try was a failure (my boo-boos). Keep them coming my friend, as I learn something, or re-learn it 😊. I’m also highly recommending your channel with other Bonsai Club members, and anyone new to bonsai.
@@MiltonChang-ee6rq I will! I definitely gotta dig it up! I found it growing really close to my watermelon plant and I read the Black walnut releases a toxin that can harm other plants apparently the black walnut does that to stop competing plants from growing and usually ends up killing other plants! I will dig it up and pot it up this weekend!
Sometimes i use a bucket of water and immerse the pot in the bucket. But i fill it to top of tree to hydrate it for about 2 to 5 minutes. Depending on bubbles coming from the soil.
For my thimble bonsai I take a 1 inch piece of Styrofoam and a diamond bit drill and drill a hole in foam to press fit thimble. Diamond bit cits a perfect hole and you get a perfect plug. Foam and thimble on dish with sand to hold it down.

Thank for the video I went all out I’ve got over 20 trees all kinds I’m learning slowly the different needs and habits of different species but I haven’t figured out maples yet I live in a pretty hot and dry climate most of them have died off except 4 the 4 that lived I had to put in the shade they only get morning sun if you have any more tips on maples that would be much appreciated
Make sure the rootball never dry]ies out...Water frequently ir put it inside a tube. that is true for most bonsai...Japanese maple is also sensitive to salt.
Great news!!! A lot of it. I have 4 successfull air layers, I got a Shimpaku Juniper , an American hornbeam forest and a older chinese elm at an auction. I have discovered I have a Chinese elm in my yard which means... Tons of seedlings. Again, thank you for these videos. They are super helpful and keep me encourged ❤ P.s. where do we send the photos?
about a month ago i got 2 juniper procumbens nana. didnt do no root pruning but repotted them. changed soil to an akadama mix with bonsai soil and did a lil bit of pruning on the foliage, after a week the foliage started to be very brittle was a really rainy week so i thought overwater was the issue. now i let the soil dry out a lil, not completely but it keeps declining in health so pretty sure they are dying.
I wish I have all he facts to comment...I am not sure akadama is designed to use with soiil. Please try my simple mix...I part top soil, one art peat, and one paerrt perlite.
@@MiltonChang-ee6rq thanks for the response, well here is the thing i used the akadama with about 30% soil since akadama is inert or inorganic... because i read somewhere juniper prefers to be in a dry soil. The thing is the other plant (got 2) is in a soil mix kinda similar to that what you suggest and it is in much worse shape than the one in the akadama/soil mix. also they started to go bad after the first week i got em so wondering if its me who did something wrong or they were already dying and the shipping didnt help. just trying to look for answers hoping to avoid the same thing in the future.
we had heat wave in western Canada pushing 100 degree F. I just keep watering every couple of hours all day and my trees are growing fast! I have one shimpaku with some pale yellow white dead tips on some branches...Would repotting fix this? Or should I cut away the infected area? It was like that when I got it from the nursery but other area of the tree is okay..It is in nursery potting mix but the rest of my tree is in peat moss loam and pumice and thriving~ TY

It’s very easy to see how knowledgeable you are when you speak so simply.
Anybody can know facts, it takes a smart person to explain the “how and why”
Wow!
Thank you!

Yes...soaking is needed when the root ball is dry.
Water is life for sure. We can go 21 days without food but only 3 days without water, that is amazing to me.✌️
True!

You are most fortunate!
You can email me at hello@bonsaiheirloom.com. Thank you!
do you use foliar fertilizers? liquid algae, humic acids, maybe supertrive?
No, I don't. Not sure worth the extra effort.

How to overcome the fear of making the wrong cuts, if there is a way.
Never fear...because new shoots will come out to give you more design options.
Bonsai is a living art!
