There were many rehearsal sessions they did where they did songs that they just didn't play live during such eras of the band. This sounds great. It sucks to me that they kept it shelved until much later to bring it back. There were a lot of tunes that got that treatment. And then there were a lot of tunes that they just never brought back. Like I think that Bobby could have done Mr Charlie justice, among others, but it just never came to be. I wish.
I saw her interviewed a couple years ago where she explained why she sounded so bad in some show. While she admits sometimes it was bc she was high and/or drunk the majority of the time was bc the music was so loud she couldn’t hear herself. Listening back, especially pre 1975 break, it’s obvious she couldn’t hear a damn thing. I’ve seen a LOT of rock concerts in my life. The Grateful Dead & The Rolling Stones were by far the loudest bands I saw live. Both would leave you with ringing ears the rest of the night. I don’t know how any of them can hear anything anymore from the years of damage & bc of how old they are. I haven’t seen The Rolling Stones live since the early 90s when my ears rang for about a week afterwards. I blame my chronic tinnitus on seeing so many Dead shows in small concert halls. It was fun & I’m glad I did it but I’m certain that’s what’s responsible for my ruined ears.
Gans played this on one of the first GDH's after Jerry died in 1995. I can't confirm that on his studio logs (probably an omission) but I have the Maxell 90 that I recorded off the radio. Happy to have heard this again with "no static at all" as Walter/Donald might have put it!
Not many know, but many Bible scholars who have looked at the oldest Ancient Greek texts for the Book of Revelation realize that the numbers 666, when their accents are taken off and are just Greek letters, when translated to Hebrew spell out Nero Caesar. And that makes a lot more sense than THE DEVIIIIIIIIIL
An excellent version of a very special piece of music.
