thedeaddragon Holy shit. I think that was my first experience with Devilman. It was past midnight and I was browsing Netflix for something new, and I saw Cyborg 009 vs. Devilman in recently added. I said fuck it and started “Act 1”. I had absolutely no clue who these characters are and their stories but it looked cool so I kept watching. I fell asleep at some point and when I woke up I wrote it off as a cool dream.

When I saw this OVA earlier today I was honestly shocked that he bothered to save Miki considering he's let or inadvertently caused her to be taken by demons at least twice under Go Nagai's direction. His jealousy over Akira is so thinly veiled it could catch flies
But there's also the Violence Jack universe where he and Miki become lovers, so I don't think Ryo _hates_ Miki, he just hates what she represents which is Akira being with someone besides him.
I watched this after reading _Amon,_ so my interpretation may be a little skewed, but I thought it was perfectly in character.
In this OVA loop, he already knows he's Satan before he's got enough paranoia to get the upper hand, which either means Psycho Jenny told him early (which I don't think she did) or he somehow figured out a way around her hypnosis. If he's managed to get around her hypnosis, that would mean that he remembers _everything,_ including the actual conditions of his punishment. Basically, if he acts on his feelings for Akira, it will backfire in the _worst possible way,_ (like that one time he wanted Akira to come over so he could confess and, oops, just told the nation that my best friend's a demon.) causing them to fight, him to get rejected, and the world's end, rinse and repeat. But, if Ryo were to _not_ make a move and just sit back and allow Miki and Akira to date, he'd be able to stay with Akira forever-- though not romantically-- and bye-bye apocalypse.
If he had to make the choice between his own happiness and Akira's safety (by his own standards), Ryo would choose Akira every time, and the biggest threat to Akira's safety is Ryo's punishment.
