I'm frm Kannur Kerala..we also hav similar tradition..it's called aativedan..It's believed to eradicate the sorrows, diseases in this karkidaka month(monsoon)as it's tough times for farmers...sadly this is now limited to only few areas😐ppl who perform theyyam(a sort of spirit worship)itself perform this one too..this month is also known as ramayana month as we read ramayana..but nowadays only d houses where old ppl reside practise it
Yes there you have theyyam and in tulunadu we have daivaradhane (nem, kola , jalata etc). Same way aadhivedhan/ aativedhan in kerala and here its called aati kalenja.. in my opinion its not depending on the area or the old ppl.. It is unfortunate that many agricultural lands have been replaced by buildings and traditions like Aati Kalenja is at the brink of extinction. The advent of newer technologies, modern medicine, has not only made us dependent on it but also made us ignorant so much so that the traditions and beliefs of the ancestors are now being rejected as blind beliefs!
Let's preserve this please Everyone atleast now wake up Let's please understand modernization is not equal to westernization Both are completely different. Let's realize this and preserve our beautiful culture.❤
Read this👇 Aati month has great significance to the people of Tulunadu. During this month no auspicious occasions are organized during this month either in households or at temples. Aati month is also famous because of Aati Kalenja- a form of folk art that involves the performance of traditional dance performed by the people belonging to the community who perform nema/kola (rituals). Due to the onslaught of modernization Aati Kalenja is fast disappearing however we still find aati kalenja being performed in some villages even till this date by young ritual performers, Thus an attempt has been made by senior performers to safeguard this traditional art form by training the youngsters. Aati is also the time of the year when farmers take rest after sowing paddy in the fields. And since there are constant rains the entire region turns lush green and is a sight to watch. During aati month it became difficult for people to perform their daily activities as they were unable to set out due to heavy rainfall. Hence it became a common practice for the villages to prepare themselves by storing food grains and various types of vegetables in their attic. It is also told at Guthu households some items were stored specifically for Aati kalenja. However, Aati month also was a time when there were widespread different types of ailments caused by parasites and insects that bred as a result of incessant rains. Thus was born Kalenja- who descended on the earth to protect the people from all evil and diseases. The young performers dress up like Kalenja - by colouring their face with Aradala (yellow colour), inglica (red colour) to the lips, eyes coloured with black colour (prepared using jackfruit tree stem). The other things include a headgear or a cap made of flowers and areca nut sheath, headband, anklets, umbrella made of plant fronds, coconut fronds tied to the waist etc. They will also have white/black/orange or no beard at all. The attire differs in lieu of the place they belong to. Accompanied with a thembare (small drum) Kalenja visits the houses and stands near Tulsi pedestal with an announcement that “Kalenja has come to ward off evil.” Other people who accompany him will be singing paddana (folk song) and Kalenja will be seen performing some traditional steps as he turns the umbrella. The house members in turn will be seen giving rice, spices, vegetables and money to the performers as a token of gratitude. At the time when people experienced difficulties, the visit of Kalenja was a form of reassurance to the people that he would be there to safeguard the people and their livestock, thus ensuring that prosperity would prevail. Only time will tell whether this pandemic will teach mankind a lesson and make them believe in age-old traditions and their values
