I can't believe one of the worlds finest guitarists just offered a free lesson on fingerstyle to anyone. Thank you for sharing this. Really helpful
Richard, you are a teaching genius! Thank you for your amazing talent and patience to share it with us novices.
Easily one of the best guitar players in the world. I love listening to him play.
Fabulous to see and hear Richard in Guitarist again. What an incredible guitar player he is.
Dude is insanely talented and its a joy listening to him play.
‘And so on..!’ To whom it may help on the journey to fingerpicking, here are some songs I learned first when getting started in this style:
- doc watson - deep river blues
- mark knopfler - postcards from paraguay (great instruction video available from pavel fomenkov with ‘mark knopfler songbook’)
- Mark knopfler - Get Lucky (good quality tabs are available online)
- Freight train (pretty basic which is good, but it missed the oomph I enjoyed)
- Chet Atkins - Windy and Warm (stellar song in my opinion, and some good instructions on YT as well)
Ofcourse many others, but this is just how I started and some sources where you can reliably find good material)
It is awesome when a Genius shares his knowledge in a so simple way. Thanks Richard
Watched Richard in Southport not long ago. He's mesmerising, anything he plays by other musicians is perfect.
Brilliant concept in showing natural dependency between thumb and fingers then how to work around it. Richard, your playing is genius as is your ability to teach. One of the best.
By far the best acoustic guitar player in the world!!!
Richard I really thank you for putting this out. I could listen all night, but the pillow is calling!
Great player. One of the handful of greats.
Thank you Mr. Richard... I play guitar since 1966. Nobody tell me that exercises... Thank you so very much.
From Tlalnepantla, México, I admire you... (Excuse my english)
I've been (trying) playing guitar for more than 50 years, but Richard is one those people who was born with this natural ability...almost god given,Guthrie Govern is another!
This is so valuable to anyone starting out in finger style guitar. Many many thanks kind sir!
Wow Richard I been playing guitar since I was a kid...60 plus years but thus is so difficult yet brilliant a great LIGHT you are. God continue to bless you in your life and concerts and teachings.
Just the first 4 note thumb bass adding the other "lead" note on 1234 or the" ands " will be a lifetime of learning for my thumb brain. THANKS again for a great lesson. What seems easy is not so easy but growing learning expanding.
I don't play in this style at all. But I think the tips and techiniques presented by Richard are not hard to digest and are the most practical I've seen on TH-cam yet; they get to the heart of how a guitarist can combine a melody with an independent rhythm much like pianists do. And do this in a fun way.
What a special gift you have, and I'm thankful that you are willing to share with all!
You are not only an exceptional player; you have the special gift as a teacher.... you make the complex simple, and easy to understand.
I've been playing for many years, and I have learned years-worth in the last 12 minutes... Thank you, very much....
Richard you are so great
Your groove is amazing
Best finger picking tutorial Iv ever had.
Iv only been playing guitar for a few months.
A true master. Thank you Richard
Excellent lesson on the basics of independent thumb picking!
Absolutely genius. Makes it look so matter of fact.
This is one of the best fingerstyle tutorials I've ever seen. Clear and concise.
Now if I could only grow strong nails on my right hand...
Boogie On
False nails are an option, many great guitarist have them.
One of the very best, hands down
Wow!; great lesson Richard. But it is not easy this technique of the finger style. It takes many months, and years to master it. But whatever it takes to do it, I will insist in practicing. It’s worthwhile for those who love music and specially this way of playing.👍👏
Just MY opinion here guys..... But....... Yup! Richard Smith has to be the best overall Guitarist in the world. H's just plain AMAZING! I have been playing for over 30 years and I have never seen anyone play as smooth, calm, clean, and fast at the same time. NO ONE!!!!!!

@@bahh3298 Definitely peers. They are both just incredible. Another level.
@@bahh3298 Tommy would second DarkHorse - watch him admire Richard playing The Entertainer.
The three musketeers of non classical acoustic Joscho Stephan, Richard Smith and Tommy Emmanuel (in no particular order)
Can really argue with you on that one
Thank you for your time and help that was awesome
Thanks for this valuable lesson!! I am getting better with finger style, blending Travis picking with classical 4 finger technique. This is a great way to help me build thumb independence.
Thank you Richard, your explanation and showing how to play is helpful to a learning thumbpicker. Practice, practice & practice more for me. Your looking healthy! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for the lesson Richard .Amazing player
I can do this, but thanks so much for explaining it to other players around the world. For such an accomplished player, we all appreciate to take time out of your busy life. It takes time but opens up so many avenues and styles.
Great lesson Richard. I first heard you play on a Guitarist magazine cd in the 90s I was blown away by your your ability. 👍.
Richard you make it look so eady
very good lesson
That was so so helpful, Dont pinch and Its a cinch ,Thank you so much.
When you are as accomplished as Richard it must actually be hard to slow it down to show us. His fingers are thinking "Just lets go man !!! "
Indice y pulgar (index and thumb) technique very common in traditional flamenco guitar. Richard is a great player
Excellent lesson!
Damn man, your the champ
Best guy ever!
I can practice it after 3 days hard training between minutes 2:09 until 2:24
Excelente!! Un maestro!!

anyone know the song he played in the intro?
Is it me or did he switch between swing eighths and straight eighths?
Hello, thank you for the lesson. How do you mute unwanted string noise whie doing that?. Thanks again!
Where can I buy short thumb picks like Richards? Thanks
What. Is the name of the first song?
Thank you! What model Yamaha is that?
What kind of thumb pick does Rich use?
fantastic, what was the song he was playing at the beginning or was it an improvisation ?
Probably a blues improvisation
Dang
whats the name of the intro song?
Why am i watching this at 2am...and i don't even own a guitar
Because it’s an amazing experience to hear this level of guitaring any time if the night 😅
lol bro that’s tuff
The answer is pretty obvious. It’s quality instruction from one of the last remaining CGPs which is NEVER a waste of time.
This is the world telling you to buy a guitar
Go out and buy one!! And ya ain’t buying any of mine!!!!
🎸 LOL!! 🎸 LOL!! 🎸
Does anyone know what make of classical guitar he's playing ?
It has a 6 point asterisk on the headstock.
Thanks in advance.
looks like basic yamaha model :D can be yamaha c40 or more expensive model
I caught my guitar under the bed sheets, watching this video
Yes, I'm a pincher. Thanks for taking your time to show us pinchers a path for thumb independence.
Who seen Richard Smith at the Playboy Jazz Festival at Central Park in LA?
Thanks,
Thank You !!!!
Anyone know which Yamaha guitar he’s playing?
looks like their $100 beginner guitar...
what type of strings are these?
How to make a Yamaha sound like gold.
Masterblaster
Hi Richard thank you for this I’m a newbie guitar player who like acoustic tone but have purchased an electric guitar because acoustic is too loud to play at night, my question is how do you rate the Yamaha silent guitar for acoustic playability and sound as I like to stum but it’s not the same on my electric as on my acoustic guitar is it worth the purchase? Any advise is welcomed
Amazing. I have just had my first master class in finger picking a guitar from whom I consider the best guitarist in the world. Yes, people will say Jimmy Hendrix and Carlos Santana are the best in the world. I disagree.
What I see in contrast to what Tommy Emmanuel says about the right hand....Richard doesn’t anchor down the pinky like Tommy says to do...I suppose that’s just preference....it is the Chet Atkins way & Tommy has adopted that...which is best...? Well like I said preference...what works best for you.
Richard seems to go for a more classical guitar approach, where your hand is always floating and muting the strings. That may or may not be necessary, since he plays on a nylon string guitar and you don't need much muting on that kind of strings in practice.
He was classically taught as a child, unlike Chet & Tommy…does that answer your question?
Francesco Tarrega: "WHAT THE HELL??"
Richard Smith: " OH HELL YEAH!"
Key of E?
I wish i could play like that too:(
Can play decently but not like this lol
I think that you never played together with an keyharp, nyckelharpa in swedish
I'm distracted from his playing by his accent. English + Tennessee = Australian!
I always thought he was Australian
Richard was born in the UK. So he is English.

What country in the U.K? I reckon south east of England .
@@csnelling4Beckenham in Kent I believe.
Standard SE England working class accent.
Thank you for the tutorial. That said you started off so nicely step by step and then the last step was the next 10 in one. I am thankful for the lesson but for the instruction did not deliver on set goal o fthe video..."
Wow haha. Sorry his free 1 min video didn’t live up to your standards.
11 min sorry
Chet atkins said it took ten years for complete independence
Genius! Worth millions!
Brilliant...ano don't forget

My head hurts
I just started learning fingerstyle guitar, is it necessary to use a thumb pick and grow my nails on the right hand? I ask because I've seen a lot of guitarists using them.
No, you can use your thumbnail if you like, and some guitarists don't use nails, just the flesh of your fingers.
just do whatever seems comfortable to you. There's always "a" way to do it, and the most comfortable is best in the long run.
I'm going to assume the downvotes were for his shirt.
Please team up with Chris Thile. It would be very impressive
Looks like he is in a music store and may have just given him a basic Yamaha classical guitar.
not bad.....
Nice work cheers Richard this is such a great sound, you are the master of keeping fantastic beats and bass…. but I’m gutted your guitars way out of tune 😀✊
Hasn't Richard realised that you have to have a narrow fretboard and steel strings to play like that? Joao Gilberto and Charlie Byrd made the same mistake 😂
No.
No.
That's a student spacing classical guitar. A full spacing model will be essentially as wide as a 7 string neck. You need that spacing to allow the fingers to move without constantly rubbing against each other.
@@JamesGordon74 Good to see that the sense of humour is at long last dead!

sound`like`django`reinhartd..,
Can't get my bass notes muted, I quit.
Who the F disliked this video?
Thumb picks scare me
What a complete waste of time, at the end of this tutorial, I was nowhere close to the example at the beggining 🤣
shirt cringe but play god
