Why are flags so similar?

  • There are no international flag design rules, so why are national flags so similar?
    Notes ###
There are a few more specific reasons for similar flags, but I do hope this video serves as a decent answer to the question in my own words.

The reason I THINK we have simple flags is because we humans are good at recognizing patterns. If we would have an really complicated flag it would make it harder to recognize and duplicate.

Pablo Cifuentes Hola!

      Likewise for Ireland;
The flag was first introduced by Thomas Francis Meagher in 1848 who based it on French tricolour.
The green represents the older Gaelic tradition (Gaelic Order - The native Irish) while
the orange represents the supporters of William of Orange (Orange Order - Northern Irish British).
The white in the centre signifies a lasting truce between the 'Orange' and the 'Green'.
      Pretty Powerful.
Our flags (and Ivory coast for us) are so easily mistaken for.

Davide Here in Lebanon we share a VERY similar story. Before all the very stupid shit that happened (aka the civil war that lead to not really much to be honest) we fought bravely for our freedom and our independence from the French. And so the red rwpresents the bliod of the brave soldiers who died for this cause, the white was chosen to represent a very unique trait that Lebanon had compared to all the other middle-eastern countries which was the snowy mountains, and finally the cedar tree was chosen because:
      1. It was a tree that was found in the middle-east only in Lebanon.
      2. The tree never looses it's green colour whatever the season is and is used as a symbol to show that our nation was an immortal one that would last forever (good job on that it made WONDERS :p lol).
Anyways I'm pretty sure there is a lot of Italian influence in our flag but still... I mean before everything went to shit A LOT of Italian corporations had firms and branches here because of how rich the country was (the Lebanese pound at the time was one of the highest valued currencies in the world. Even the motherfucking AMERICAN DOLLAR didn't have that much value! Btw shameless bragging about the time your country was good is shameless).

I believe France was first to use three vertical stripes and popularised this for other republican movements to follow.
The former French flag consisted of pure white dotted with gold flowers, to represent the Royal House of Bourbon who were kings of France.
During the various French Revolutions, the French adopted the tricolour flag we know today. The flag of Paris (two vertical stripes of blue and red) are symbolically "crushing" the white colour of the house of bourbon, symbolising Paris overcoming bourbon rule and crushing the French monarchy.
You could say that Paris defeated the bourbons on both sides

Neno Martínez The second republic of Spain was actually pretty good. Education was improved (more than 50% of the population didn't know how to read or write before the second republic), many jobs where created, and the country started to modernize, but of course the communist parties appeared and all went to shit with the civil war. I bet that if Spain didn't have a civil war and was still a second republic it would be in a better position than now. (With no communist parties)

I recommend you should listen to your "HISTORY" teacher before even commenting here... Maybe you're one of those people who think "negatively" of your own country who is being brainwashed with colonial mentality... You didn't even think of it as a coincidence, not even thinking that red and blue are so common that most flags have them... The only reliable thing you said was that of the triangle on the left... Piss off...

The green background symbolises peace, the sword symbolises our strength, and finally the odd Arabic bundle of words and calligraphy tell of our religion's idea (it's kind of an oath) which is what Saudi's law is based on XD It looks so different from the other straight line flags.

one rule from heraldry is that metals(Gold/silver respectively yellow/White) must not stand aside metals, and colors not aside colors, also a coat of arms has to be recognisable from a cretain distance.
the function of a flag is similar to a coat of arms.
this rules seem to be followed with a lot of flags, 2-3 Stripes can be easily seen from a distance and a lot of countrys have the metal in the middle.the number of combinations is of course limited.
Also that stripes are preferred over Checkers may have to do with easier stitching. 3 stripes are two straight seems, Checkers are three seems and create a weak point in the middle where the seems meet.
(i know that flags nowadays are printed, but historically they were certainly sewed)

idk if someone already commented about this, but there's a reason why most Arab countries use the colors white, black, green, and red (or some combination of them). there's a poet called Safi Al Din Al Hilli (who lived about 700 years ago), who wrote poems, and specifically one verse, praising arabs. roughly translated, it goes "white are our deeds, black are our wars, green are our dwellings, red are our swords" (the superlative is implied) which is brave and generous and all, but it makes it pretty confusing to memorize haha

If anyone wonders why there are many flags in Africa that use the same colour scheme (green, yellow, red), that's because just after WW2, many Africans wanted independence, inspired by Ethiopia's ability maintain its independence despite Italy's numerous invasions. They were also the first to use the green, yellow and red colour scheme. Because of Ethiopia's independence, it became a symbol of Pan-Africanism and freedom from colonialism, and thus many advocates for Pan-Africanism who also happen to be advocates for independence designed flags based on Ethiopia's flag. As a result, countries like Benin, Ghana, Mali and Senegal all use green, yellow and red.
