Well done. The snapshot/replication segment was extremely informative.

I have using Synology NAS hardware and software for years for personal and small business clients. I can’t say enough great things about the products. They just keep getting better and better, and the best part is their utilities are free and very robust.

Thank you Lon...This is the most user friendly explanation of how to do backups than so called tech channels which are hard to understand for non techies like me. My main question will be, will it work the same way for Google Photos backup, as I only want to do back up of my Google photos locally with similar double backup option?

As always, another great Lon video! Love both your Synology and Plex especially. Would love to see a Synology Hyper Backup from onsite to offsite. I’ve done this using Tailscale and it worked for 7 backups, then quit. Now it will not connect and login offsite, though I can still login to DSM. 🤷🏻‍♂️ If you have a better option to create a consistent VPN connection that Hyper Backup will support, I’d love to see that. Again, excellent content!

2:05 I use BackBlaze for my encrypted cloud backup (S3 bucket). It’s the cheapest option I’ve found and the service works great for me. I think it cost half a cent per month per gigabyte, plus downloads fees. Since it’s a backup, the downloads are almost nothing. You just need to make sure to turn off bucket versions (I think they call them snapshots). The HyperBackup files already save backup versions (as you show in the video) so saving versions on the cloud server only duplicates the data and increases cost.

Hi Lon, i would really like if you could do a tutorial/review on Docker. I have recently purchased a Synology DS923+ as well as still using my first Synology which is DS920J.
I am having some difficulty getting Calibre (for ebooks) and tinymediamanager working for my video scapper. I dont think anyone on you tube has done this though there are instructions on how it could be done. I just dont have full success.

I had recently factory reset my synology nas. I would like to restore from google drive but I'm not sure what to do during setup, do I select "download remote changes only" or "bidirectional," I am terrified of selecting bidirectional. Would that sync my empty drives (since it was factory reset) to google drive, thereby wiping my data?

I’ve got two 920+’s in 2 different locations. I want to have them backing up to each other and basically be mirrors. Is snapshots the way to go or active backup? Seems that both are an option. So when I’m at one location and make changes on those computers they initiate local backup (either through snapshots or active backup) then pushes that backup to the other 920+ at the other location over the internet. What method is the best?

does snapshot replication require port forwarding? i assume i can use a ddns provider on the remote synology should it not have a static.

I believe I see all the same basic backup processes available in QNAP, but in your review you didn't have anything regarding Deduplication. Does Synology have that?

I know ABB does, but not sure about Hyper Backup or Snapshot.
