One of the most philosophically and ideologically complex films I've ever seen (only watched it for the first time recently), while simultaneously being perhaps the most controversial and dangerous film ever produced and released-- not that you didn't already know these things, I'm sure. I agree but maybe it's the point... life is boring, real couple, real life is boring, we repeat the same argument. I think I like the fact that either Marie or Malcom have learned nothing, they haven't changed by this argument like all movies want us to believe. Of course nobody looks in real life like Zendaya and John.
It's repetitive and everybody tries to win the point by using rational tricks than emotional stuff but it never worked.
It's the battle of egos from both sex: Marie uses sex and vulnerability ( caricatural feminine energy..) Malcom uses money, power and anger over her.
I love the end when Marie thinks she finally won, but at the end instead of giving up by saying, He is sorry, Malcom said he loves her.
And every person who has been in relationship knows why Marie didn't buy for it..😊
I had to watch it twice to get past the story of the critics of the film and get that they were actually talking about the basic dynamic of long lasting relationship, especially the ugly part of it, the codependency, the routine, the lack of consideration on both sides and the love despite that.
    Thanks for your review❤

most pretentious film i’ve personally ever seen. characters felt completely alien. was waiting for them to shut the fuck up and just go to sleep. a film that nails the concept i feel Levinson was going for here is Locke starring Tom Hardy. it’s a great film about a man basically arguing with himself in the mirror while juggling multiple phone calls about several different things that all directly affect his life.

Hi Maggie, would you consider reviewing 3 films (or 2) in 15 minutes instead of one in 15 min? That would allow you to cross off more films from your viewers' requests. And 5-7 minutes is still a substantial amount of time to do an in-depth review for a single film. Siskel & Ebert only had 4 minutes, shared by the two guys, to review each film. Ebert once made the point that a 4-minute review on TV often had the same or higher word count than one of his written reviews.

Hi Maggie, Rules of the Game would be a nice film to review, and an easy one to review too, I would think, since its influence is still felt in modern period dramas like Downton Abbey, etc. Many ensemble dramas, like the ones by Robert Altman, and the many ensemble comedies we see often in film and TV past and present, with their intricate storylines, relationships, etc., all owe Rules of the Game a big debt.

One of my favorite things about the film is the hypocrisy of it. Sam Levinson does all those things that Malcolm says he hates. There's this type of duality that the film has. Sam Levinson says Malcolm is narcissistic and Marie agrees with the critic, so if he is projecting, then he is calling himself out. His last film, Assassination Nation has a very clear, in your face message, the opposite of what Malcolm says.

A truly vapid and unsophisticated reading of the film and its characters. Everything you accused this film of you could also accuse “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”.of. It is a disgraceful injustice to project onto Malcolm what you think are Levinson’s opinions. You literally have NO idea what he thinks about anything. You also make the vacuous assumption that Levinson regards Malcolm as correct. Or justified. Or indeed the hero of this film. I don’t believe that is the case at all. Your review is a entirely simplistic reading of the dynamic between these two fictional characters. And you rather prove what Malcolm says about critics. That they are only concerned with the identity of the filmmakers rather than the substance of the story.

    • @aaronshouting588
      @aaronshouting588 3 ปีที่แล้ว

this entire review is based on the assumption that the film and its creators are completely unaware of what they are doing.
it's a far more sophisticated picture than you make it seem because the film is entirely conscious of all the points you've made about it.
it's a film about itself, making fun of itself.
and that's just the vehicle into a study of communication between two people who obviously have a trauma-bond. at it's core, what is being explored is the concept of vulnerability vs ego. and narcissistic denial and insecurity.
the contradictions through out the film are
deliberate. that's what makes it humorous.
and to make the assumption that just because sam levinston wrote the film it must mean that malcolm must be his mouth piece is operating under the presumed judgement that a screenwriter can't write fiction.

The movie was amazing. John David Washington and Zendaya did a phenomenal job in acting. The movie is not your stereotypical movie with a lot of actions (car chase, fight, nudity, cars explosion, special effects). It is deep, substantive, minimalistic and thought provoking. it is a movie for an adult audience , not for teenager. It wasn't boring at all and with some suspense. Not many actors can pull that off. It was first and foremost a story about a couple at their lowest point. they had to argue to sort things out. At the same time, reflecting on the filmmaking industry. This wasn't out of character with one of the main characters, Malcom, being a film director. I don't see the pretention of Sam Levinson, a director himself, son of a movie director in engaging in a discussion about the role of film critics in relationship to filmmakers. JDW is an actor, the son of the greatest American actor of the 21 Century. Who are better equipped than these two to fictionalize issues within their profession? Where is the pretention? John David and Sam Levinson live in that world, know it from the inside out . They have the right and the knowledge to discuss about everything involving their craft.

I 100% agree with you. Everybody is so use to fast pace and this movie showed
a more realistic view on relationships.

Just based on the IMDb description it looks like a derivative Cassavetes rip off. Can’t judge it without seeing it but yeah looks like nothing we’ve never seen before
