  • In custom car audio it is very common to need several different sizes and configuration of speakers for a car audio upgrade. The JL Audio C5 line has long been known for its stellar performance, but the speakers have usually been sold as component sets. JL's change to the line to make each speaker individually available is HUGE for custom upgrades and car audio system design! In this video we take an in depth look, and review the JL Audio C5 component speakers.

    Great video! I am sure they sound great, however what I did not like about the 6.5 is the way the surround sits against the mounting holes. To me it looks like it might get disturbed when you insert the mounting screws. I have seen that on other speakers which had something similar and there was nothing you could do about it. The sound was not affected however I did not like seeing that.

    I have a set of Memphis M Class 6.5" components I am installing along with one Punch P3 12" sub. I have two amps, Memphis 300.4 and Memphis 600.1. I have been reading about having just an active crossover front stage vs the passive crossovers. My Kenwood Excelon head unit has active crossover and DTA so I can run an active front stage with that head unit.
    Question is: How would I make that work with my 4 channel amp ? Run the tweeters and mids each to a single channel by way of an rca splitter so reman front speakers to the head unit ? I was originally going to run the set of components and a set of coaxials but seems an active front stage would be better...so I have heard. BTW, I love the channel, I have been watching some of your older videos and have learned quite a few things I never knew, thanks.

  • @paulweston8184
    @paulweston8184 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    One thing I'll never understand is why speaker manufacturers overlap half the mounting holes with the surround and leave it that way. If this is someones first time installing speakers, they don't want to have to cut into the surround so that the screws don't catch on it causing it to distort and sometimes come loose from the frame, especially in butyl rubber surrounds. JL is such a quality company too. 6:53

My speakers are what pioneer calls a "3-way" speaker, in a 6x9 format, and appear to have a built-in tweeter... I honestly don't know the difference between all the different types of speakers though, and would like to learn what they all are, and the different uses, each are good for...

      @@richardparker294 Placing a speaker in the center of the dash is an installation technique used to raise the sound stage. Now with advances in Digital Signal Processing, this can be achieved through system tuning. However, there are some instances when speaker locations aren't ideal and there is only so much you can achieve from a tuning stand point. This is why installs are shifting from integrating a center channel to custom a-pillars.
      As far as a product recommendation, there are a lot of stand alone DSPs that can be used with a wide variety of amplifiers. JL Audio offers a couple options from our TwK system tuning DSPs. Over the last couple years most manufacturers have integrated their DSP offering into an amplifier, for an all-in-one solution. This simplifies the installation and optimizes the use of DSP for each amp model. JL Audio also has a great amplifier product on this front called VXi.

    This raises a question are oblong speakers better for bass, is there a disadvantage to a speaker that is a 4*6 or 5*7 or 6*9? I have seen adapters to convert this to a 6.5" but is this actually an advantage??

    • @joeykatleba6378
      @joeykatleba6378 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bigger cone area generally means more bass. 6x9s are commonly used in stock systems because bass "sounds cool". A round speaker is superior in sound quality almost always but most people won't notice a difference as long as you buy a quality speaker.

    • @noncog1
      @noncog1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is no inherent advantage in sq to round or oblong. I could go into how you could argue whether multiple length breakup up or uniform length breakup up is better, as even that's debatable, but the reality is it doesn't matter. We'd have eliminate so many other weak links for it to make sense to even think about which mode we'd prefer. The reason people say 6x9's are better for bass is because everyone is too much of a bitch to put an 8" in their doors (or know better, lol), and 6.5"s are smaller. Larger cones tend towards lower frequency bands. More displacement means more bass output without needing more excursion, but you run into beaming at lower frequencies, and a heavier moving mass is harder to keep articulate at higher frequencies.

    You should put a disclaimer that JL Audio Is NO LONGER selling the C5 Line, they are apparently focusing on a C6 model, I just feel like they are going to up the price even higher then the C5 line to be I between the C5 and C7. Making a typical consumer go with 1. The C3 line if they can't afford the new C6 or C7s or 2. Go with a different brand entirely. I got the C7s and they are pretty good and I do like them but in my opinion they are not worth the current asking price. With these C5s out of the picture now, the 3 way options are now slim. 🤷‍♂️

Not a crackling sound but just that quiet sound. I have been told it’s called white noise. I know there is someone out there that can help me fix this problem. Pac audio told me to switch the little voltage button on the unit and it did drop the static sound a little bit but it is still there. I need to figure out the problem so that I can turn my amps up. There should be no sound coming out of those speakers till the music is turned on. Can someone please help me.

      Wait until the pandemic ends and I get a chance to go visit in person. They employ TONS of people here in the US. They still manufacture quite a few skus in the Miramar location. To be honest they probably have the most American manufacturing BY FAR in comparison to other car audio brands. Everyone says they want American manufacturing until they have to pay the prices for it. Which is ironic because you are complaining about the price. Finally these particular drivers are manufactured in Germany as discussed in the video. What it all really boils down to is the engineering behind the product. These speakers are designed and tested with scrutiny and it shows. They aren't just picking some random parts to throw together a speaker and having a name screen printed on.

    Component speakers really shine with an active setup, ie separate amp channel for each speaker and dsp to sort out the frequencies, even with cheap speakers. Passive setup with the usual crossover box is a waste of money.

    • @noncog1
      @noncog1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not entirely true. Crossovers exist over caps for a reason. A system on a well designed and built crossover will sound significantly better than just a cap on the tweeter. Unfortunately, not all crossovers fall into that classification, especially not the ones in "budget friendly" sets
      This isnt to say full active isnt better, but a good crossover is the next best thing
