How do I stop woodpeckers from pecking my house?

This is problem that is not easily solved. Retired UT Extension Agent Mike Dennison says you can use plastic owls or shiny streamers that flash in the sunlight. He also talks about why the birds peck houses and gives some other options.

We used to have problems with flickers (similar to woodpeckers) not only pecking on the house (T1-11 siding) but creating sizable holes. At one point, they opened up a hole in the soffit that a squirrel used to gain entry to our attic and build a nest. Anyway, I accidentally stumbled onto the solution: I painted the house. That apparently offended the flickers for many years, and when they started back up again, I took it as a sign that it was time to paint the house.
Note that it didn't deter them from pounding on our metal chimney cap, but that was more of a mating thing and more amusing than damaging.
