    WHAT A PLEASURE it was to join Harry on this episode! So enjoyable to talk with a consummate, passionate and knowledgeable colleague around our favourite subject! Definitely a day to remember - made me feel like I was a kid in a massive toy slash candy store. Serious case of drooling and bug eyes (thanks for editing that part out Harry!). Still gushing about the day in conversations with all my friends. The 2nd half of this will go live on my TH-cam channel this Thursday at 6PM U.K. time (th-cam.com/users/FrankStephensonDesign). If you’re curious to see how I experiment with a “fine-tuning” of the legendary and sacrosanct F40 design, be sure to catch it. Hoping I don’t upset the Mafia or the Pope... 😉

      You're right the Countach LP400 is a gorgeous design. Those are very rare though. The later versions may have the naughtyness due to the fleared wheel arches, air intakes and the rear spoiler but the original design by Gandini is timeless (minute 3:58 ). Also production techniques where not advanced enough for the original design leading to sharp edges at the front window line. Also the bottom rear would have looked much better if it was naked and you could see the rear tires, the rear differential and gearbox as well as suspension components.

    • @EliteRock
      @EliteRock 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I once liked it (as a teenager) but now I will never allow myself to love any design which uses a steep, flat windscreen, it's bad in every way - stylistically, aerodynamically and functionally (massive un-sighting by the A-pillars). Check out Koenigsegg (or even the Miura!) to see how it should be done.

The last one I saw was in freeway traffic in LA in the 1970's, also white. Certainly one of the most distinctive and rare cars ever, and amazing to see on the street. • @martinocorbelli3042
    @martinocorbelli3042 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The word Countach is not derived from the Italian language. It comes from the region of Piemonte in North West Italy (referred to as Piedmont in English), where the local language is Piemontese. Piemontese is pretty much its own language, although referred to as an Italian dialect it has as many French influences as Italian. Countach is a Piemontese word and is just as closely derived from the French language and pronunciation, if not more so. It is a word that could only exist from the hash-up between the meeting point of these two countries. A word that is as mysterious and beautiful as the car it is now associated to and from a region of Italy that is equally delightful. Great video, love the chat and impressed with Frank's pronunciation.

    I was at the London Motor Show in 1987 - every year as my Uncle was the late David Jolliffe (ex Rob Walker Racing) he owned and ran Portman Lamborghini (Sole UK Lamborghini Concession) on George Street W1 for 31 years. See Supercar Classics ~ ‘Supercars I have Known’ article on David, September 1989 with Stirling Moss and his SLR on the cover well worth a read. I've been lucky enough to drive no end of Lamborghini and others. I worked for Davids friend David Stephens who owned Heathmans in Parsons Green (aged 18 for a few years 86/87/88/89/90) driving and selling newish/used and at the time classic Lambos and Maserati, De Tomaso Iso Griffo - all the great Italian cars and others (1950s Vette's, Modern Porsche all sorts). Countach was and is a fab distance car, crossing Europe as I did many times in one. The car other than the 288 GTO though and I mean THE CAR for me was and still is the F40. I saw that The Hairpin Company had this as I was looking only the last few days at F40's. Love the show Harry. Keep it up.

    Harry, Frank, thank you for the video and the discussion about the cars.
    Several people have mentioned that the F40 is Nicola Materazzi's most notable work. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicola_Materazzi
    He is de facto "Mr F40".
    I would like to point out that this brilliant engineer started at Lancia and followed the Stratos rally cars around the world. He also worked on the GTO (288) and the Bugatti EB110.

    Frank is a very talented guy who designs top end supercar to high production superminis very well. No safety mesh on a hot exhaust, bit like crazy architect want no balustrade on a stairs cause it look good, car designers and architects the same.

    Harry's pronunciation is the correct one. The word "countach" means "contagion" or "plague" in Piemontese, always used as an exclamation of astonishment. Such word was written that way just to let English-American speaking people to pronounce it properly. Such expression was used quite often by one of Gandini's collaborator, who's first name was Renaldo (unfortunately I don't know his Surname) while working on this car's prototype.
