I've been sleepwalking all these years!!! Never took into account how TIGHT and melodic the bass line was!! Up until now, all I've thought of was Slash, Slash, Slash. On the other hand, if I had really thought it through, I would've recognized you don't create an immediate classic without every base covered (no pun intended). OUTSTANDING job, dude!
It's funny because I've owned basses and played them at a beginner to intermediate-ish level, and I usually listen to the bass, but somehow, I completely missed Duff's great bass lines in this song. I always thought GnR were all about Slash and Axl. Many years later, when Duff's name was showing up on lists of great bass players, I started to pay more attention to his stuff. This is a great one. Good job! You sounded perfect.
In my humble opinion, back when they first begun playing/ recording together, if it were not for Duff's bass, Slash's guitar would not be able to shine as much. They are both awesome musicians on their own, but together - magic happens! :) p.s. if you want to test this, listen to GnR's appetite for destruction without the bass lines. I previously heard a bad mix which took away Duff's bass, it was strange & made me appreciate Duff more than ever before :)
This song is one of my all time favourites and I’ve always loved the bass line.. It’s what my ear is always drawn to! I’ll be learning to play this and I’m sure the practice will get my picking technique up to scratch! Noting like a P bass played with a pick 😁
Well done, most bands would change from C# to D to play. One can try to master using this and is helpful to fill in any voids if you were learning by ear. Then, take the time and see if you can pick up what scale or arpegio it resembles and then it will make even more sense. I do not use a pick, but with a JAzz style bass and rounds, should be able to get close to the tone that makes it sound authentic to the music. thank you
I have a week to learn this before the wedding of our guitarists mom where we're supposed to play this (I hate spending more than 10 minutes learning shit)
@@roaming740 ah It went well if you get the overall groove you dont have to play everything exactly like he does but instead you can play around with the fills which made it much easier for me since I didnt have to remember every note
@@Eddie-Double-G is the song tuned down to match, or is the tab tuned down? I guess more simply put: if i memorize this tab and play with the track, it will sound right?
@@aidenmeyerbasschannel well actually, this track is tuned UP, not down. The original is in Eb, this is in E. But, replying directly to your question, if you memorize this tab and play it in regular tuning, you can't play along with the original track. However, if you memorize this tab and tune your bass half step down, then you can play with the original. The tab is accurate for both tunings.
@@Eddie-Double-G ah gotcha. Thanks. This band was my favorite bass player, Taiji Sawada's favorite band. When reading an interview from another bass player I like, he also mentioned guns and roses, so I figured I'd try them out to see if their music was any good. The bass line is pretty fun I guess, but I don't care for the vocals tbh.
Hello, I am a beginner, is it ok or recommended to use a pick to play bass, instead of plucking, or for example with song in particular there's no other way it should be played?
I've been playing bass since 1990 - always with a pick. That is how I was taught by my friend and so I stuck with that method. Many people play with their fingers instead and swear that is the best way. There are pros and cons both ways. For me, I find that I play much faster with a pick and people can actually hear what I am playing. Strumming the pick back and forth over the strings at top speed is easy for me and much relies on my wrist action, type of pick I use (nice thick "Stubby" ones are the best, to slide on and off the strings easier) and finger grip. I can play "Psycho" by The Exploited - an insanely fast bass riff - only with a pick. Jason Newstead, formerly of Metallica used a pick and only one by a certain manufacturer. When Metallica were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame and had to play a song he looked in his pocket and couldn't find it! He had a meltdown but fortunately found someone there who had the same sort of pick. Phew! I also think that playing with a pick gives a percussive sound that rings out and lets you be heard over the guitar. Gene Simmons, the bass player in KISS, once famously said in a rock newspaper interview "Bass players who play with their fingers - do you really think anyone can hear you?" I've listened to friends who play finger bass and I can't really hear them over the drums and guitars (especially in a two-guitar band) but I always compliment them on their "playing". But..... playing with fingers can be cool - you get a bass "thud" when you use your fingers which truly is in every sense "bass-like" and many people like that in a bassline - players and listeners alike. The more earthy and deep the "thud-thud-thud" the better. You need your fingers for that. And I have found that you can "hammer-on" and "pull-off" the strings easier if you use your fingers. These are techniques favoured by more funky and soul bands. Female singers and bands with a quiet overall sound prefer a finger bass player because the bass stays in the background and doesn't get in the way. Some finger bass players can be very quick and percussively loud, almost as if they are playing with a pick - Flea, in the Chilli Peppers is a good example - but you need a band that supports that sort of bass player and in most of the amateur bands I have been in the guitarists have wanted to strut their stuff over me and the pub/local venue sound systems haven't been that great so I have always gone for the pick method. Also, to be heard playing by finger you may need to compensate by getting a bigger bass amp and cabinet (amp = the metal bit on top with all the dials; Cabinet = the speaker(s): most professionals buy them separate and use cables to link the two. Others, pushed for space and cash buy a "combo" where the two come in one "box", but the speakers are always small). It's great having a huge speaker cabinet but then you have to buy your own car to take it to a gig because no one else in the band wants to trade space in the boot/trunk with their own gear. This means you can't drink and drive (a problem affecting drummers most of all). Listening to records to see the best technique won't help much, because they engineers recording the instruments fiddle with the sound settings before, during and even after recording. Sometimes, records made in the 60's sound as if every bass player played with their fingers but that is only because the recording processes were so poor that the poor old bass player had to be relegated to te "back" of the mix.

I just bought the tab, so I'm practicing it at my own pace, but I'm a little confused. The length of this song (5:52) differs from the original song (5:02), which is also linked in the description. Are there different versions of this song? Thanks.
