    Switched from cartridge to dry to double edge, and I'm never going back. Shaving this way is so much more than just an action, it's an art form. I'm still getting the hang of it, some nicks, and one bad cut, but I will never shave any other way from now on. Thanks for the great video, and the passion!

    • @briarwood138
      @briarwood138  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, let me see...Speick , Tabac and Proraso are my favs, I guess...favorite blades are Astra Green, Feather, and Wilkenson Sword are my go to blades--Vergulde Hand is a great shaving soap. Haven't really tried anything I didn't like yet...except for a protein 21 after shave--had a putrid smell---ended up having to pour it down the drain!

    Thanks for taking us on a tour of your shave den sharing your joy of shaving and collecting that many of us wet shavers share. You have a wonderful array of DE razors, especially Gillettes. But I didn't see any straight razors. However I did see that you have the Cobra SE razor that uses Feather Pro blades.
    I suggest that you get a Feather Artist Club SS straight razor, either their folding or non folding type. Then you can begin a new adventure of learning to enjoy straight shaving. I learned to straight shave after life saving surgery three years ago. My new hobby of both DE and straight shaving has helped me to survive. I used DE razors for 6 months, then I used the Feather AC SS kamisori style razor with Pro blades for 6 months, then for the last 2 years, I've almost exclusively used regular new and vintage straights.
    The Feather AC SS has a rounded bottom which creates a tiny moving V-notch into which the blade edge glides across the skin. This gives a very close shave and also helps protect against nicks. The Feather AC SS razor is an economical way to start enjoying straight shaving because just like Gillette's old slogan. you get a close comfortable shave with "No Honing, No Stropping".
    Thanks for your videos, the music, the different scenes and themes. Your videos remind us how wonderful are the simple joys of life. Per your example of using more than one after shave product, I've started to finish my shaves with an alum block, some lime skin food and a splash of bay rum lime. Excellent!! Thanks Joe-

      @briarwood138  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Ray--glad you're doing better..sounds like you went through a tough time. I do have a couple of shavettes, and a straight edge....but I seem to cut myself up every time I give them a try. Perhaps one of these days I will get the hang of it. I really enjoy the Cobra and the Schick Injectors a lot. Thanks for watching, and hopefully soon, I will get the hang of the straight and do a video!!

    I don't know Joe but I'm pretty sure the Gillette Silver Blue are the smoothest shave. I just got another box of Feathers and found they are sharper but drag on my skin and cut easy (using the same prep, oil, Arco soap, hot towel found that the Gillette astra are the 2nd best for me of course. Derby's I have found to be an average blade. What's your opinion Joe?

    • @briarwood138
      @briarwood138  10 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @briarwood138
      @briarwood138  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks David--Software, blades, brushes coming up next---essential products for the wet shaver in my opinion--preshave oil, a soft brush and also a brush with some backbone for soaps, an adjustable razor such as a fatboy, futur, or progress-- some blades that are very sharp for a heavy beard and some not so sharp for a lighter shave, soaps and creams of choice--after shave lotion and balm--and of course a lot of practice!!

    Wow! I remember asking to see your shave den then I run on to your video. It's pretty incredible, now I see the secret to your youthful appearance!
    Question: The jar of Pinaud,(to the left of the Barbicide Jar) is that a pre shave?
    Also: what are your top 5 pre shaves? I've been using oils and they're fine but I'm open to change.
    You have a huge collection of DE's. I have one, a cheapie but I gave it up due to the fact that it was not shaving me well. I should probably look for a higher quality DE. There must be hundreds of good ones but which do you suggest to stay away from?
    I enjoyed your video. If you let me in there I could literally play in there for hours like a kid in a marble factory!
    Take care, stay warm and we'll see you again.
    ~Guy

    • @briarwood138
      @briarwood138  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Guy--The Pinaud is an aftershave. My favorite preshaves are my homemade ones, Proraso white, and sometimes Aquaphor by Eucrin, Corn Huskers, and Coral Skin Food by Geo F Trumper.
      My best suggestion to start your DE razor collection would be a vintage Gillette Fatboy and a Merkur 34C.
      If you're ever in the Long Island area let me know, I'll give you the grand tour.

    • @gentlemensedge5503
      @gentlemensedge5503 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for commenting. Interesting blend of pre shaves. It goes to show how trusted products can pull double duty. I'll look into the DE's you suggested. I could really go for something like that when I'm in a hurry.
      I haven't been any further east than Decatur Alabama but would love to hang in LI. My buddy is from there.

    Here's a link to a new SE razor called the ""Mongoose" which should be on the market soon. I just saw this video today.
    th-cam.com/video/CVQy8u_aWOs/w-d-xo.html
    You may be interested because it's like the Cobra but is a 3 piece razor that uses the Feather Pro or Kai Mild type blades. I'm interested because I have a custom Olive wood handle for my EJ89 razor that I could use on this new Mongoose.
    For a very brief time I tried using a Dovo shavette using half DE blades but didn't like it because it was too light plus the thin blade gave me several nicks. The Feather AC SS razor is truly a professional razor, has more normal weight & the rounded bottom presses the skin down which gives smoothness & helps prevent nicks. The Feather took away nicks and taught me to use a light touch. I enjoyed using it and bought up a life time stash of Pro blades which I might now use in this new Mongoose. I almost bought a Cobra but didn't like the fixed handle.
    Keep making videos, take us on more tours. Happy trails

      Mongoose looks like a nice razor--but I think its too close to the Cobra that I already have, to invest in another similar razor---If I didn't have the Cobra I would seriously consider it--but the Cobra looks so much sexier--think I'll pass on this one---Thanks again Ray!!

    best regards friend !! from Argentina Latin America, you have a beautiful enviable collection, I admire in fact the products of such high category you have, unfortunately here in my country anything like that you can get to get, having to resort to the online market and paying fortune for any product, no more I send a warm hug briarwood138

      Thanks Ruben--a lot of my collection was by using ebay and amazon---but I guess I'm lucky to have places like Pasteurs close-by. All the best in Argentina---I'll be the envious one when winter hits here, and you're enjoying the nice warm weather!!

    Good Afternoon Joe,
    Question,when does a collection become obsessive when you need a bigger house,
    Joe.LOL,I love most of your vintage collection but don`t fall into a trap where you collect items just because.I keep to a golden rule` collect only what you will use,its no good keeping a painting locked up in an attic for you to see twice a year.You get more pleasure when you get to use the item than saying you have got the item.This rule will keep you in check when buying old razors and new,As you know millions of razors were made of all different shapes sizes colours material and you will not touch the service on buying anywhere what you would like to own,so get the pleasure out of the ones you really want and can afford,Always buy razors you want to use so that your collection becomes unique to yourself and they are being appreciated in the way they are meant to,some Razors were designed to be used and loved`yep a man thing LOL. The proud engineer that invented certain wet shave razors wanted his or her name carried out to the gentlemen using them.It would be a shame if all collectors just looked at what they had and never used them what a terrible hobby to have,So I hope you are getting the most from your collection Joe and all the best with it..
    Best Regards Mr H

      +wow dude Thanks Mr H----thats sound advice--and I can tell--from a wise man
      I would guess that I use about 80-90% of my razors in the rotation

      briarwood138 That`s good to here.Your Dads one I would place that in its own little glass face case,and place with your best razors because if you drop that one it irreplaceable,as you say he more than likely taken that to with him on his holiday breaks`so knowing what type of man you are by watching y/tube that razor would have a special place in your heart.
