    Hey Eric. Great job on the quarter panel. I am learning a lot about bodywork by watching your videos. Good luck with the spoiler fitting. Thank God my 69 is a one piece spoiler. One less thing to worry about fitting. Car is looking good.

    my factory spoiler is off a tiny bit like your replacement so i am guessing back then, it was close enough. LOL

    Yea, I like those camaros WITH THE spoilers. It looks like something is missing without a spoiler on it. Good stuff erik.

      Yeah, TOTALLY agree with you James. I really don't like Camaros without the spoiler. Thanks man!

    Glad you had better luck with this deck lid Erik. About the spoiler, personally I think they spoil the car Lol. Guess that is what makes the world a great place is people have different likes and dislikes.

      Yeah, it is funny that way. It looks naked to me without it. Thanks Jerry!

    • @homotorsports

      This might sound funny but most AMC guys judge there cars by the poor body line that came from the factory..They look for them when buying a car and if there not there it trows up a red flag..On an AMX the door bottoms stick out..the trunk lid gets real tight on the back corners and the rockers dip in right behind the doors...

    • @asicerik
      @asicerik  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is funny. So, are you saying they are looking for collision damage?

    • @greenfigaro9624
      @greenfigaro9624 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whenever I watch restoration videos of 1970s cars, I'm surprised by all the effort people put into good gaps. If I'm remembering correctly, most of the cars didn't come from the factory with much attention to proper fit. I'm glad I'm not alone to notice this phenomena.

    • @asicerik
      @asicerik  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, you are right. The factory tolerances were not great. A lot of people look at the gaps on a restored car to see how diligent people were. It is a fit and finish thing, but for a lot of cars buffs (and judges), it is the the first thing they look at.
      Since this is a restomod, I am not trying to make it as good as factory new, I am trying to make it better. It is a crap load of work to fix these gaps though!

    Those spoilers are "Tasty". If they line-up, is it a matter of adding to the thinner one, OR thinning down the thicker one. Looking great!

    • @asicerik
      @asicerik  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I am worried about cutting down the thicker one and finding a void. We'll see when we get there. Thanks a lot.

    Looks like y'all about got it figured out. Too bad you're having to trim the trunk lid, but I'm not surprised. When it comes to aftermarket parts, it's hard to get a good fit.

    I agree with the spoilers making the car. I'm interested in what you end up doing to build them up as my original spoiler gaps aren't so great and will need some attention. Glad the trunk lid came corner dent free.

    I like the tall rear spoilers on these car too. The deck lid looks like a nice piece. I cant tell how wavy the spoiler is but slick sand may be all it needs. Hopefully Wendall will chime in on the spoiler, he gave me some great advice on the cover project. I have used cloth and mat. I don't know if resin alone has any strength.

    • @asicerik

    Erik, Hopefully the spoiler is fiberglass and not plastic, it sounded like glass when you tapped on it. I checked on the Summit listing for the OER spoiler and it says it's fiberglass. First thoroughly degrease to remove any mold release agents. If it's glass then you can use polyester resin for your repairs/modifications. I would use 3/4 ounce chop strand matting (cloth mat doesn't lay down easily) torn into small pieces to add to the spoiler to build up where you need for large edge gaps but duraglass and bondo is fine for small imperfections. For resin/mat repair you will have to grind the dark gray gel coat finish down to the fiberglass to get the best bond and bevel/ feather the edges back so you don't have a straight sharp angle edge to minimize cracking. Work any bubbles out as they will be voids. As far as applying filler to flat sand the rest just scuff the gel coat and apply. You can make a tape dam on the edge and apply against it, the tape will peel off. Here's a vid I did some similar glass repair on, Lamborghini Countach Replica Part 6 th-cam.com/video/mLWUoygcC-E/w-d-xo.html

    • @asicerik
      @asicerik  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Wendell! Sorry for the late response, your comment fell into the spam filter. Thanks for all the great info. Yeah, I think it is fiberglass too. I picked up some stranded mat, I forget what size, but it is pretty heavy (1.5oz I think). I also got some general purpose epoxy resin, which I need to research a little bit.
      I did watch your Lambo video when it came out, and I will continue to use it as a reference.
      Thanks bud!

    You didn't want a deck lid with pre-drilled factor spec holes for the spoiler? Love watching you work... hah! Great videos as always.

    I think I'd build up the base of that left fender section before cutting stuff off the top...I'm not sure that's the right way to do it but that's what I'd probably do..

    • @asicerik
      @asicerik  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @dayslife

      yes, from what i see on the video, you still have room to tweak it around for a better fit...

  • @fatstercat
    @fatstercat 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's looking good man smart move on the hinge leaving that sleeping large dog foaming at the mouth rest I think your solution was the best route to go ......too dramatic? ......ok onto the spoiler I would devise some sort of dam and fill it with resin ....scuff first for bonding give a little extra for sanding and boom!!! perfection!!! .....ps. your neighbors messing with you man I really think they are lol

    • @asicerik
      @asicerik  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hehe - I knew you would comment on the blowers! Yeah, that is what I was thinking, a dam of sorts. Do you know if resin sticks to tape? I know that trick works with body filler.

  • @idaho2ndgens240
    @idaho2ndgens240 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Done some fiberglass work in my past life on sailboats. I would not use cloth or mesh in such a small build up. It is too small. Mesh or weave would be used for larger flat build up or pieces. Short strand would be what I would use with resin heavy.

  • @perka68
    @perka68 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    you will need mesh and resin to close that gap. It could be done with fibre glass filler but it wouldn't be as strong. You can use body filler to get the low spots out.

    Trunk looks good , did you say you were going to shave metal off the side of the trunk ? I guess you might get away with a little bit but that will split that fold in two if you take to much , unless I am thinking wonky :)

    • @asicerik
      @asicerik  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right Roger. It will likely split, but I think it will be easier than splitting both quarters. Especially since the driver's side is done. The other thing is that the filler panel at the top fits the quarters perfectly, so I will have to mangle that part as well if I cut the quarters. Mark did his by trimming the lid, and it worked out.

    Okay I'm by no means a fiber glass expert, however I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night and.... LOL...
    In my RC boat building I have use resign and mesh for big gaps. The cloth I have used is 2.5 oz. and that is more for modeling work because it disappears in the resin. I'll be using the same stuff when I start building on the console. if you want send me a PM with your phone number and I can give you a call.
