If people want another option - when I made my Jester cosplay, I used plastic rope for my tail core! It only cost me a few dollars from the hardware store. Then I made the spade from cardboard, and hand sewed on some tights I dyed with food dye and vinegar! Mine ended up around finger width, so I was able to use some pretty rings for the cuff!
I was going to go as Jester for Comic Con this year (but it was cancelled) and I had no idea how I was going to make her tail. This is really helpful. Thank you Ginny!

hat tail tutorial is exactly what I needed to finish up my tiefling cosplay! I was way over complicating it and i didnt even think to connect the tail with fishing line to another part of the costume or body in order to have a moving tail! Im really dumb! 😅 Thank You for this!
Not dumb at all, I so often find myself overcomplicating costume things! Then I see someone else do something so simple and effective and I'm like WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT...
This is almost EXACTLY how I made my second Jester tail too! I used the dowels that where cut in half, cut a notch in the inside of one, and glued a wire in. It has a really natural bounce and is completely posable for photos. You have to make a little harness for it to sit properly though. Great minds think alike lol! Yours turned out really good! 💕💕💕
this tutorial is too powerful, as in i watched this 2 months ago and just barely acted upon it, performing the steps by memory and constructing a 7 foot long tiefling tail on accident, as in i've constructed the tail mere minutes before writing this comment. 10/10 have to attach it to something to avoid dragging it on the floor. looks awesome
I’m kinda shook, I’ve been wanting to use those foam dowels for something but couldn’t think of anything. Now I’m working on my own D&D character who has a tail, and I’ve been wracking my brain on how to make it......two problems solved. 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
dang i felt like a genius when i came up with a "tailsock" lol. i cosplay two different colors of tiefling (so far. probably going to add a third soonish) and i made a super basic tail out of old broadcloth and pillow stuffing, and then stretched a tights leg over it, basted it, then sewed that separately so i can take it off and put the other color on. also, so much easier than trying to match colors! matching facepaint is hard enough i didn't want to do it again with acrylic paint or some other fabric
My friend and I are going to a comic con as Blitzø and Millie (sadly we don't have someone cosplaying Moxxie) so we're watching this tutorial to figure out how to make their tails! It's cool seeing another helluva cosplayer 😂
AH! Finally someone who explains in a simple way how to make a cute tail for tieflings ~💙. Thanks a lot Ginny I have been looking for such a tutorial for my tiefling for a long time. Greetings from Italy ~💙.
This is so great! I made a home brew moth woman character (Lunala race) and I want to cosplay her so bad but was dreading trying to work out the thinner extra arms! I remembered watching this video a while ago and am gonna apply the foam dowel and fishing hook method to make my bug arms! I’m so excited! Thank you Ginny di!!
OMG! This just gave me the perfect solution for my phoenix tail! I wanted it to be trailing "flames," and painting foam dowels and gluing on organza flames is totally the way to go.
I've seen several tutorials that use foam pool noodles, gently cut to shape them, and with some small notches along the sides to allow them to swing. It's so amazing to see all the different things everyone out there can come up with! Thank you so much for sharing with us
Popping in to say thank you so much for making this video! I'm con-crunching and was about to start making my Jester tail with polyfil and was concerned about it being lumpy. I never even thought of those foam dowels. SO clever!!! My tail is perfect now, so I really appreciate it!
1. Always wondered how people make tails! Never had to myself (my cosplays when I've bothered have been Kevin from Sin City, Heath Ledger's Joker, Homestar Runner, and Mario), but cool to know! 2. Love your new hairstyle. Bouncy!
This is pretty similar to how I did my devil tail for when I did Simon Snow. I did a worbola wrap around the space and just painted it next time since I didn’t need to match a skin color. Love the video. Thank you Ginny!
I did one with expanding foam for the tip and electric cable for the long part. And dental floss instead of fishing thread! Thank you so much! It was very inexpensive and easy to do
Love the 'blah blah blah' bits when addressing 'procedures and safety'. :D For something 'so simple', you make it look professional... and 'formfitted'. Wish I could sew a 'tube' and get that clean of a fit/seam.
I'm so excited I'm finally getting a chance to use this as I'm currently putting together 3 tiefling cosplays! (thankfully they're all the same colour so I only have to make one tail) Thank you for this tutorial!
I just started playing a Tiefling warlock in my group and I have to cosplay her for Halloween. I just bought a dress, horns and a wig, but had trouble figuring out what to do with the tail. Your video is informative, thank you!
When I made mine I made a tube of fake leather around a core of those giant rubber twisty ties that are used for hanging big heavy things with some batting to keep its shape. Nice thing about that is I can shape it how ever I like and it holds it. Part of the twisty tie sticks out so I can attach it to a belt.
Ahh, I'm so glad I stumbled across this video!! I'm cosplaying as Modeus from Helltaker this year and this helped immensely! I'm going to buy a cheap bracelet to tie the fishing line to so I can hide it under my sleeve since the hem of my skirt is too short. 😅 Many thanks to you!!!
This was so useful omg I’m doing an oc for my first cosplay (Francis beau my beloved ) and had no idea how to do his tail. It’s a super thin black tail with fur at the end and I resorted to using garden wire but it doesn’t look good I’m definitely going to try this
Yeah, that's you getting high off the fumes... Please try not to do it as it can be super harmful to your lungs and your brain. Be safe when crafting! 😊
I’ve been looking for ways to make a tiefling tail for Nightcrawler from X-men for a while and I finally found one. Next Halloween and hopefully my first con will be great
Just a heads up for people buying fishing line - some lines are tinted so they they are least visible *underwater*, while some are clear so they are least visible in all environments. If you aren't sure which you are getting ask the shop staff - fishing people are totally used to cosplayers, puppeteers and model makers buying line.
Thank you! This is really useful! Though i wont be using it to make a tiefling tail it is definitely a useful tutorial for longer thinner tails in general!!
The best part is that I can get those dowels at Joann Fabrics when I’m also getting fabric. I don’t have to order anything and worry about it not being good quality!
Thank you so much for posting this! I really want to make some flexible antennas to attach to my headphones and this seems like a very simple beginner friendly option! :D
hey I think if you just do a "normal" tail tip and put some fur on it, it can be a firbolg tail! I'm definitely gonna try this out, thanks for the tutorial

Hi Ginny Di. I have been enjoying watching your vids and had a quick question: I know you are a big fan of Jester's Tiefling, however, what is your favorite race to play in D&D? Please and thank you, Samuel.
Hey Samuel, I've only been playing DnD for a short time and so I've only played one race, really: Elf! I'm enjoying it, but I have to explore a lot more before I'll feel like I can really name a favorite.

This is a very helpful tutorial, but I unfortunately don't know how to sew, and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for another way to bind the fabric around the tail together? Can I use fabric glue or fusion tape and get the same results?
You could use glue, but I think it would be much more difficult to keep it from looking messy! It would be really important to be careful and methodical, and work very slowly.
As someone who has gone as a Tiefling Gentleman/Warlock/Wizard, the tail is the one thing I was lacking (besides makeup but thats cuz I just went human skin instead of a brighter one like I wanna try)

Can you do Dragon born wings or tails?
As someone who just made a super pretty tiefling bard character and immediately went, "oh no, I must cosplay him," this is SUCH a gift.
I did the same! I didn’t give mine a tail though because I’m super lazy lol 😂😂😂
I did the same with my magenta tiefling warlock
Tieflings are so much fun to cosplay, I’m currently working on a costume
