- RadioWavz, MFJ, and Icom provided gear to set up a Special Event/Get on the Air station at the 2016 Stone Mountain Georgia Hamfest. In this video, 10 year-old Hope (KM4IPF), who is reported to currently be the youngest Amateur Extra Class ham in the country, helps 8 year-old Cayden get on Amateur Radio for the first time. Cayden's dad is a ham and Cayden tagged along with him to the Hamfest.
Cayden's first exposure to HF Will probably be very memorable, considering that he had such a cute little girl helping him get on the air and that he had such an impressive radio to use! They were getting on the air with the ICOM IC-7851 which was connected to the RadioWavz Sentinel Hexbeam. The hexbeam had the brand new 40m short element on it and was working very well.
Although Hope and Cayden weren't using them in this video, MFJ provided a couple of headsets and a noise canceling speaker so multiple operators could be on the air simultaneously. Several times, both the IC-7851 and IC-7300 were on the air at the same time, using the same hexbeam antenna. The 40m element uses a separate feedline and allows for simultaneous use of the 40m element and any of the 20m-6m elements. Of course, bandpass filters were needed, but the set-up worked flawlessly.
Congratulations to Cayden for his first Amateur Radio HF contacts and to Hope for giving him a helping hand. Folks, this is the future of Amateur Radio. Support kids in the hobby!
