The communications regulator (CSC) accused TV5 of spreading "malicious insinuations" and "disinformation" about the transitional government. The channel was fined 50 million CFA francs ($82,000) and criticized for hosting Newton Ahmed Barry, a critic of the military regime. Previously, the CSC suspended French newspaper Le Monde, British publication The Guardian, and German broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW). TV5 had already been suspended for two weeks on April 28 after airing a Human Rights Watch report accusing the military of killing civilians. Multiple foreign news outlets, mostly French, have faced temporary or indefinite closures since Captain Ibrahim Traore's coup in September 2022.
