    I'm from NYC. Brooklyn. In the ghetto we say "ya". "Ya on know" yah ohno" meaning "you don't know" you being used in a plural sense only. "Ya oh no" "ohno" as if it's one word "Yah ohno". "Ya" is "Y'all" in the hood New York accent. Just thought I would be interesting to show a different way another part of the country uses "y'all". 😀 Love your videos! Can't wait to see more. Can you show us UK accents. Maybe focus on England. Geordie.... East London vs South West London. Wales. Scotland. Looking forward to more videos from you. We're all connected!

    Well I’m from South West Texas, (Houston) and literally everybody says “y’all.”
    I’ve never heard “you all” or “you guys.” I’ve only heard “y’all.” Y’all all. All y’all. It’s such a weird word lmao
    I’m gonna say “you all” for an entire week starting now because I wanna see everyone’s reaction.
    Have a good day/night/morning you all!

    My favorite is the double contraction of y’all, which is “y’all’re” = you all are! It’s wonderful!

    I say "You all" because I find there is not another group of words which means the same especially in the corporate arena. I learned that my great grandmother also said "You all" according to my dad. His family is from the Houston Texas area. In common speech, I will say Y'all but I feel it sounds so informal so I mostly use you all.

    I started saying y'all once I went down south for college. Y'all is usually two or more people, alla y'all is the plural down where I'm at. It's such a fun word to use, much fewer syllables!

    Being from South East Texas, I notice, we say "y'all" more similar to the way you said it as a "northerner". It's almost as if we barely open our mouth and the sound slips out. Then the "l" sound happens just with your tongue barely against your teeth.
    The "southern" comes in a lot with how we connect y'all to the preceding word. "Hey y'all" almost sounds like "Hayall". "What are y'all doing" is like "Wudderyall doing?".
    Unfortunately, I'm guilty of "all of y'all"!

    Southern Appalachian, which has distinct differences in vocabulary and pronunciation, may use "y'uns" instead of "y,all". Y'uns is a contraction of "you ones." It's a bit more specific than "y,all" as it addresses each of the individuals in a group, rather than the group as a whole. The possessive form of Y'uns is "Y'ernses." Example: "Them books on the table is y'ernses."

    As an American, I think one thing that you should talk about is the word "supposed" and its variations. Every time I say it I feel like I'm pronouncing it incorrectly and I thought you'd be the perfect person to express the word's intricacies. Love your videos, and VIBES!!

    I'm from Tennessee. I lived in Memphis for 17 years. In Memphis, the white people didn't use "y'all" nearly as much as the black people and nearly always said "you guys". Then when I left Memphis and moved to a rural, mostly white, part of Tennessee, everybody says "y'all" and I'm pretty much the only Southern born person who says "you guys" but there are a large number of non-Southern accents spoken around here from Northern and Western people moving here because of the low cost of living and availability of good jobs in this area.

  • @heycarlat
    @heycarlat 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    A sure sign of a faked Southern accent is to use "ya'll" to refer to one person. If you say "Hey, Amy. What are ya'll doing this weekend?", you aren't asking Amy what "she" is doing this weekend, you are asking Amy what she and her family are doing this weekend.

      I disagree. born and raised in the south and when someone refers to yall as one person, it's even more southern. for example, I walk into a steak house ALONE. the sweet gray haired lady says to me "how yall doing today, honey"

    i'm just seeing this and while y'all is commonly heard in below the mason-dixon line, most african-americans have been saying "y'all" for over a century now....most in the north and west as well. in fact, it is common to hear latinos in the north say it too.

    We love to cut our words short in the south too. I’m in Arkansas and sometimes we will say how you doing as one word owyoudoin or of course since you is up as sincyouis up. Some say New Orleans as Norlans. Short cuts and made up words like doohickey,thingamagig.whatchamacallit. I’m in western Arkansas so our accent is like hillbilly and Texan mixed.

    i find that when i'm speaking with more "emotion" to someone (in an argument, reassuring someone etc) i use more of the stereotypical southern words like "aint", "y'all", "no" (in replacement for are not) and i'm not sure why :0 any possible explanations?

    I work in a public place and operate a train, meanwhile I have to speak about the things we pass, a woman just the other day came by with a southern accent asking where I was from! I said "here, why?" Meaning western america. And she said "really?! I was just a wonderin cuz ya kept sayin ya'll" I just love saying it, but I say it like you, unless I really talk fast, which tends to happen on busy days.... I did live down south for a time, so I can mimic a jumbled southern accent quite well, but... Yay to Ya'll!!!! :^)

    Hey! Thank you so much for sharing like you do! I found this terribly interesting. I'm from (French) Canada and many sonorities and expressions are so curious to me! This is great to learn to understand how it all happens culturally. ;) One thing I've been struggling with though, is the southern (or midwestern?) "Where", or "when" like I've heard "anyw-hh-ere" ?? Never managed to reproduce it correctly though. I figure this must be really USA-ish. Think this could be one of your future tips? :)

    As a non-native English speaker I think y'all sounds so much better than "you guys" which Americans seem to love saying.

    • @AnaSpeirs
      @AnaSpeirs 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Northerners in the US are more likely to use "you guys", southerners and African-Americans typically use "y'all". In a professional/corporate setting a person may use "you all" to address colleagues
