Malaysia FamilyMart can't compare with the ones in Japan. In the beginning, it used to be good but i think lately the standard has drop but the sofuto, oden and some of the sandwiches & onigiri is still good.

Maybe because they had to stick with halal products.
Some Family Mart locations in place with lots of tourist will had part of food that not halal.

Familymart food is expensive and not great. Definitely not Japanese level. I bought a ham and cheese sandwich once and was shocked when I opened the sandwich. The ham and cheese was folded to make the visible side look full but the half the sandwich was empty. Also tried their Japanese curry rice, the taste was not good and the portion was very little. I only like their sofuto ice-cream and oden. I used to like their ham bun then realised it doesn't need to be refrigerated but can be kept for 4 days so it's probably soaked in preservatives.

If I'm on a budget, I actually don't mind eating the ready meals in family mart. I have eaten many times as well and my favourite ready meal is cheese hamburg chiki with mushroom sauce & rice coz it reminds me of Japan! But I don't see it selling in family mart anymore 😭
Now I will just go there for their onigiri, sausages & sofuto.

Hi Ghib! I am also in KL right now! Where are you going tomorrow haha! And yes, I visited a few family marts in Malaysia already. You absolutely cannot compare it with Japan, I go Japan like 5-6 times a year for work. I have a pretty good idea too…. 1) I do not really consider Japan to be very developed or highly advanced honestly, they still have many parts of the country left behind in terms of thinking and understanding the world. Except for of course big cities like Tokyo or Osaka… foreigner resistant…
      2)The culture wins big time I must admit… 10
Technology is world class yes but they are very used to keeping old practices and technology. Paper culture…8
      Architecture is good! 8
Local products and produce is obviously very different from many other countries. It’s is awesome! 9
The scenery and nature is amazing 10
and standard of living is not there if I were to compare my own country… singapore. 7
Overall characteristic of Japanese are very helpful and polite but it is not too friendly probably due to the language barrier.

If the price is same with Japan means it's cheap in Japan but expensive in Malaysia lol. The cheese baked gyudon looks awful!!

If you don't stick to the original, why bother to say it's Japanese food.

Family mart food is not even great. I go to CU Mart instead. Why? The sandwich is half filled in family mart.

Definitely not worth it. And from the looks from the shelves, is minimal on the food and canned drinks section but the rest is ok..
Not a choice to good if at Malaysia.
And no tiny bottled hard liquors like the ones in Taiwan or Japan.

I find this interesting considering how there's always a Malaysian in food videos claiming Malaysia food is better 🤣

It will be a wrong business model to copy 100% Japanese taste as they will not suit with the locals. As an example Malaysians like sweeter or spicier. If not the taste will be dull & as your targetted consumers are Malaysians, your business will be doomed. So the reason for the Family Mart to sustain and expand their presence is clearly because they adapt to locals’ needs, not Japenese.
